Was just wondering, how come the transfer decisions to University of Washington comes out so late in June through July? I got accepted into the University of Miami and I have to make a deposit for the U by May 1st and I believe the UCs I have until June 1st.

Nobody knows…
I know that for Foster though the decisions come out in mid May.

@seatac Oh I see, I’m really anxious to see if I got into UW, just can’t believe I have to wait so long to decide! Do most students in the state of Washington attend UW? I have two friends from Seattle at my current school in Boston and it seems to be the case.

@Marquis

I was wondering this, too. I was also wondering why the transfer notification period seems like a large window of time to hear back. When I visited admissions to get some dates & deadlines clarified, the transfer specialist said it’s even possible to not hear back until early August. For me, it’s not a big deal w/ conflicts, but I’m still curious about it. I understand the dilemma this situation presents for you, though. Sorry (And good luck!)

@CollegeDreams22 Oh my you got to be kidding me early August? That’s pretty ridiculous… So, we get to know if we make it only about a month before we go back to school? That’s a lot of uncertainty, I wonder how it’s like for the community college kids too, especially if they’re set on going to UW, and you’re not even sure about whether or not you made until a month before schools start again. It’s also a pretty big gap for freshmen and transfers, freshmen are getting notified now while transfers really late on…

I’m a transfer student who is REALLY wanting to get into the UW. Question: what do I do if I have to make deposits to the other schools I applied to before UW notifies me?

Yeah, I was surprised to hear that, too. / I have a feeling that we won’t hear back that late though… I think she just said that just so come Aug. 1st the admissions office isn’t flooded with “Why haven’t I received a letter yet?” phone calls from prospective transfers. Plus, we have a two month window where we can hear back, in comparison to freshmen who have a two week window – and it seems like freshmen notifications are arriving on time. So, since we have a much larger window to receive our notifications, I think they’ll be on time.

I would contact UW admissions and inform them about the situation w/ making deposits for other schools. After that, I would ask admissions at the other schools. Someone should have an answer somewhere!

@CollegeDreams22, yeah I would agree, but even so, even if there’s a tiny possibility that you get an acceptance letter in early August, it’s such a big gap for June and July for other schools already. Yeah, freshmen are getting notified pretty quickly, well I don’t personally know since I only know two people that are from Seattle and know only one person that goes to UW. Even I get it on time, I’m afraid that if I don’t get accepted then all the stuff that is required after the deposit will be filled up and I’ll end having a bad dorm room or just not a good opportunity to choose what I want for another college. I really don’t want that to happen…

@shaemus, I probably agree with CollegeDreams22, we should probably call Admissions, but to be honest, I don’t know what that will really do, but they might be able to clear it up, my parents told me to just put a deposit on the schools anyway just because though they want to discuss my options when I come home in May and since the University of Miami is due May 1st, they just want me to put down a deposit, I’m not sure if your parents would be willing to be down a non-refundable deposit on your schools, but yeah. I’m just afraid that although I do get the deposit done, I will still have to pay for student housing and everything and well… I don’t want to get the last option…

Yeah guys. Unfortunately, it’s the way it is. As far as I know they notify promptly those applying for the fall. However, when it comes to summer it might be different. For example, I remember that last year we had people who got notified less than a week before the start of the summer quarter.
However, as I mentioned earlier, if you also applied to Foster you might be notified earlier. I got my notification from the UW first in mid May and a little bit later I got a notification from Foster. Apparently Foster tips off admissions and they send out a letter earlier. I believe that when you transfer, a lot dependents on how fast you get admitted in your major.
As for other universities - I do understand your situation. I got a notification from UW Bothell about 2 weeks before UW Seattle and my deadline for the deposit was fast approaching. The same for WSU. However, at some point I just decided that Seattle is the only option with which I will be satisfied.

@seatac I see, for me, I would really enjoy to go to UW, I mean my heart isn’t only set on UW, but if I get in I would seriously consider it and I feel the same with the other universities I applied to, although I’m still waiting on all the UCs, except UC Santa Barbara.

Oh wow, totally forgot, on the CommonApp, which is where I applied for the University of Miami, it makes you sign this:

I affirm that I will send an enrollment deposit (or equivalent) to only one institution; sending multiple deposits (or equivalent) may result in the withdrawal of my admission offers from all institutions. [Note: students may send an enrollment deposit (or equivalent) to a second institution where they have been admitted from the waitlist, provided that they inform the first institution that they will no longer be enrolling.]

So, I guess I’m not allowed to put a deposit into multiple schools If I put a deposit down for the University of Miami… So, I don’t know what that means for UW, I wonder if they actually enforce this though.

I’ve already made a deposit to another school. I was informed by the admissions office that this was OK.

"Dear XXX,

If we offer you admissions to the UW, we will not revoke that decision because you deposited at U. of O.

Sincerely,

Carlos Williams
Assistant Director
Office of Admissions
University of Washington"

We just need to make sure we notify the school we originally deposited at, that we will no longer be enrolling.

Is it possible to have money that’s been deposited refunded incase this happens? Or is that money down the drain?

@psychguy, Oh wow that’s good, I need to ask the other schools I have applied to whether or not they would allow it because I’ve been accepted from more than one school so far.

@shaemus, I doubt they will let you refund your money, if it states that they won’t refund it then I’m pretty positive you won’t get it back, ask admissions though, that would probably be best.

Yeah, that’s $200 down the drain for me PLUS application fees.

@psychguy, yeah, the University of Miami is a $300 deposit, I just hope if I do choose to go somewhere else, my options for dorming and etc. are still wide… Someone on my University of Miami thread said if I call Admissions they will most likely extend my deadline, but I doubt they would extend it as far as July.

None of my schools would extend the deadlines. I declined 2 of my offers (WSU and UWT) and paid the deposit at one (UO). I’m waiting to hear back from UCB in May and UW in June-July.

@psychguy That sucks, if I get into UC Berkeley, I think I would most likely go there, but I doubt I will get in. You’re pretty set on UW though huh? How are other transfer students handling the process up in Washington if they applied to more than just UW.

Yeah, I’m actually quite torn between UW and UO. I could potentially already have an undergraduate research assistantship at UO (since I was accepted and able to view and apply for fall positions via Blackboard); I’ve already been contacted for a few interviews. By the time UW notifies us, I’ll have already registered for my classes at UO, known if I scored a research assistantship, and I’ll have dealt with financial aid (i.e. accepted my awards and submitted all necessary documentation). As far as UCB, I’m also not expecting to get in. It’s slim pickings and as a WA resident, the probability is even worse. We’ll see.

@psychguy, It seems like you are pretty set for UO, how come you’re torn between UW too? Closer to home and cheaper? Yeah, I don’t know many out of state people who go to the various UCs, but there’s always a good amount, if you do get in, would be a great opportunity, heard the campus is amazing and well the Bay Area is seriously a lovely place, I love it up there.
