get dressed up to go out

Penn definitley looks like a real-to-life J. Crew catalog. However, students are always free to wear whatever they want and not feel "left out". That's the great thing about Penn. It's laid back enough to allow students to be themselves.

nantucket reds are pants and shorts of a faded red color...i believe the original manufacturer's website is www.nantucketreds.com

yay i need a new wardrobe.

OHhh, those clothes. Yeah, lots of kids wear that stuff where I live

that is such crap. all of that site...just sucks.

Yeah pretty much people wear clothes from Polo, Vineyard Vines, & Brooks Brothers on a daily basis...

typical outfit includes polo shirt (popped collar)/oxford shirt, cashmere sweater, khaki/nantucket/plaid/pastel color pants, boat shoes, & ribbon belts.

however, on weekend for going out (well mainly off campus and to some of the preppy frats - st. a's and owls) you'll need a few blazers.

Oh god, I hate the popped collar. Spare me. But I go to a prep school, so I have to deal with it ;)

That style is down with me minus the popped collar.

It's funny to watch. At the beginning of each semester, people will dress up to go to class. Then, gradually as the semester goes on, those same people will start to dress more and more "down" and "casual". By the end of the term, people are literally rolling out of bed and just showing up to class, hair matted to the head and all...lol! It is a sight that must be seen! :)

popped collars are aweful...lo thomasH32 I can just imagine the process...it would be fun to keep a record of a specific person and see how he/she progreses to an out of bed look

I'm kind of surprised - I expected Penn to be more urban chic (I'm thinking, like P Diddy here) than preppy. Of course, it seems like everyone's only posted how guys dress.

I think it's cute that so many of you are interested in how other guys dress at Penn.

i need a new wardrobe too :(

heh heh, i really hope we're not scaring off penn newbies. even now, serious preps kinda freak me out. but maybe that's just my urban lower-middle-class background talking.

When we visited Penn absolutely nothing struck me about the way kids were dressed. I DO notice these things. There was a variety- lots of Penn (and other college) sweatshirts. Jeans and khakis. Wrinkled button down shirts untucked over tshirts. The same clothes you see almost anywhere.

I was at Penn last weekend and everyone dresses there own way.. Alot of girls were wearing jeans and uggs or like sweatpants and uggs to class and the guys just wear like jeans and northface jackets. At night the girls dont let the cold prohibit them from wearing cute clothing, and they still manage to wear tank tops and skirts... but with a coat over.. (( the bars and clubs have coat checks))

I was at Penn a few weeks ago and while there was definitely a tendency towards preppy I didn't feel too out of place at some of the frats rocking my Pink Floyd shirt, jeans, and war-torn Nike running shoes.

So what clothing companies are labeled "preppy"? In my high school, everyone sees Abercrombie as the preppy, but I'm not sure.

Preppy is Lacoste and Polo and Brooks Brothers...

A&F is cheap preppy.

When i visited penn I noticed a very crowded urban outfitters, which was really close to the campus and full of young people so I assumed penn people like to dress in vintage looking clothes. a&f included. lacoste is cool, brooks brothers and polo.. reminds me of my dad. not cool.

I think the Urban Outfitters on the Penn campus was one of if not the first Urban Outfitters in the country. My daughter can't believe I used to shop there when I went to grad school. I've made many trips to campus (S got into Penn ED) and would have to second MomofWildChild's assessment of the situation - I looked for these things, too! I tend to think that certain people get noticed more than others on any campus and maybe the ultra preppy people just stand out more from the general crowd.

Hard to believe that look is back again! People wore chinos, Lacoste, FairIsle or Dean sweaters and ribbon belts, and anything Lanz back when I went to undergrad in the late 70s!

As far as the women on campus, I've noticed they are casual but many do seem to make an effort with makeup, accessories, etc. Trends are definitely getting away from the real trashy look that was in for awhile.
