I’m sorry, I don’t know much about financial aid.
@bruins8clap did you already receive your financial aid summary from UC Berkeley? Are you a freshman applicant?
No. I am transfer applicant. this is hypothetical if I do get into Berkeley – I do have high likelihood of getting in.
https://financialaid.berkeley.edu/summer-aid
It shows pell grant I would receive is 3k.
Then also UC Summer fee grant. Which I would be eligible for 3k as well.
@bruins8clap Oh i got startled when you said 3k pell grant. I have 0 efc and so far I’ve received 6195 from colleges I got accepted so far. I realize that summer semester isn’t as prevalent as fall maybe? Perhaps that’s why they offer just that amount
huh?
For quarter UC’s you get: 2000 dollars per quarter from pell grant.
For quarter UC’s during summer you get: 2000 dollar pell grant.
For semester UC’s (Berkeley and Merced) you get: 3000 dollars per semester.
For semester UC’s during summer you get: 3000 dollar pell grant.
I wonder how much these classes will cost me if I enroll in the summer program assuming I get admitted. I’m sure it’s way more than the 46$ per units price at my community college. Since I have 0 efc. Would 6000$ in summer grants fulfill the tuition of these classes? Don’t know
They have it on website for each university you want to go to.
For quarter system during summer: each class is generally 4 units. Each unit cost 280 dollars.
To qualify for maximum aid in quarter system during summer you must enroll in 12 units.
For semester system during summer: each class is 4 units. Each unit cost 419 dollars.
To qualify for maximum aid in semester system during summer you must enroll in 8 units.
@bruins8clap oh I was thinking about the whole year rather than the semester haha. My mistake. Yeah you’re right it’s like 3070 for me per semester for pell grant, atleast from my community college atm
if you are 0 EFC, you will get blue and gold plan which means your tuition and fees associated will be wavier. You will qualify for 6k pell grant which is basically your spending money (split into 3 quarters or 2 semesters).
Anything extra: regents scholarships, etc. varies from university.
@willowstil thank you so much I really appreciate it. I feel like its always so hard to articulate how I feel and my experiences at NYU. I got into UCSB though so at least I know for a fact I can be out of this hellhole haha
@CalifornianRoll I’m from LA so I’m already a California resident! And yes I applied for Fall 2019! And thank you haha
@anne123456789 I personally think NYU is better than UCSB. Not just because NYU is a private school so it has a better alumni network, more available resources, less competition, but also NYU is more prestigious than UCSB.
I recommend you to look around and find more friends at NYU, and you will find close friends if you put into the effort. If I were you, I would only leave NYU if I get into higher-caliber schools such as USC, UCLA, UCB, and Emory.
To me, an education at UC public schools other than UCLA and UCB does not worth it.
This is just my opinion. No offense for those who study at UCs other than UCLA and UCB.
@sagaciousforever yeah I feel you haha but I tried all throughout fall 2018 and this semester and its just not really working. And I got into communications for UCSB and comm is good there so idk… I wanna put my happiness and for lack of a better word sanity first lol
@anne123456789 Yes, fitting a college or very important. I know friends who transferred from a top 25 to a top 40 because of failure to fit in. Go with your instinct and good luck!
@anne123456789 Hey I’m sorry to hear NYU isn’t working out for you. For the longest time I’ve been looking forward to transferring, but also worried it’s going to be hard to make friends. I just hope wherever I end up transferring, the community is friendly and inclusive. I heard UCLA is the most transfer friendly, while UC Berkeley is not as transfer friendly, but I’ve met really nice transfer students at both through both school’s transfer programs over the summer. Anyways, I hope it all works out for you!
@willowstil thanks! What’s your major?
@sagaciousforever @anne123456789 Just thought I’d add that according to US News’ rankings, NYU and UCSB are tied for #30 on the National Universities list: https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities
I always take rankings with a grain of salt, but it’s interesting to note I also think Sagacious makes a good point, but I suppose it depends where your priorities lie. I’m really into positive psychology, and many studies have found that happiness begets success, so I personally would rather go where I would be happy. But I agree that it’s good to go with your gut
If you’re interested, Shawn Achor is a positive psychologist and former Harvard professor that researches happiness, along with its connection to success. His research has helped me a lot with my own life, so I thought I’d pass it along. I hope you find happiness wherever you end up!
@toronto99 Of course! My major is sociology (my dream is to get a PhD and research homelessness and housing insecurity). What’s yours (and what do you want to do)?
@willowstil That is a pretty awesome choice with what you want to do!! I am a student who has experienced homelessness in the past (twice actually) and I alway feel that society tries to oversimplify the causes of homelessness. I wish you all the luck with your endeavors towards your goals!
@willowstil Even though their rankings are close, NYU is inarguably better than UCSB in terms of resources, curriculum, and reputation.
UCSB improved their ranking this year but you have to look at the admit rate to see how difficult it is to get into each school. NYU is way harder than UCSB in terms of admission. This means that NYU is academically stronger than UCSB.
At least for international students, UCSB is way easier to get in than NYU. The difference between NYU and UCSB is probably between UCLA and UCSD. I know for UCSB last year, international students only need a 1350 in the SAT to be competitive, but NYU you will need a 1450 to be competitive.
For the California citizens’ pool, it’s different.
By the way, my ranking of UC schools for undergraduate (overall): UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, UCI, UCD, UCSC, UCR, UCM.
