UC Berkeley Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

Hi I might have a problem and Im not sure what to do or how it affected me…
But Im going in as an Econ major and on my UC application, I put that I was going to take Calc 2 in spring 2019 but I just found out about a week ago that I am unable to take that course and it is a prereq for my econ major.

Just say that I was admitted to UC Berkeley for fall 2019 and they found out about my incomplete Calculus course. Would I be rescinded or would I have to take the course during the summer?

@desperateccstud You will be rescinded. Berkeley economics major is impacted. You do know last year there were 1342 applicants for the major and only 299 got accepted. All of those 299 applicants most likely had calculus 2 completed. You will definitely get rescinded if not completed by spring, and they will not allow you to take it during summer since it is very important class for the major.

I agree with @bruins8clap, FWIW. I’d try to get it at a nearby college - or maybe online?

I really don’t understand why you need someone to chance you when you have a 4.0 GPA and tons of ECs. Obv you have a solid chance of getting in, why do you need a bunch of strangers telling you that? haha doesn’t really make sense to me. Especially this late in the game when decisions come out in like 2 weeks.

@Trashception a person can post whatever they wish. Many times 4.0s don’t get in - many times - and everyone’s nerves are shot. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean disrespecting. Just scroll on by.

4.0 doesn’t mean anything. Obviously, a 3.9 to 4.0 is the same. Because once you pass 3.9, you are evaluated on other components of your application.

A person with a 3.7 to 3.8 but very strong essays, extracurricular, and other profile can beat a person with 4.0 but nothing else standing out.

Therefore, do not be too obsessed about your grades. Have confidence if you have a 3.7 or higher. Enjoy life before the results come out!

@Trashception People may want to ask for a chance me for a little reassurance. This is a nerve racking time for many students in the admissions process. There is nothing wrong with asking for a chance me. Chance me posts are a part of the culture of college confidential. This is a college forum. I’ve seen many of your posts and you are always bashing on others and being rude. I see you applied to haas and obviously you don’t even understand the four defining principles, especially “Confidence Without Attitude”

@haasbear yeah, I don’t get why people are making such a big deal about people asking for chance me’s. It’s perfectly fine.

@Trashception Calm down bro…I know tons of 4.0 didn’t get into Berkeley and UCLA. Everyone is nervous at this point. And actually, posting stats would give future applicants a better idea. I see no problems with that.

@sagaciousforever I am sorry but this is untrue information. For transferring to undergraduate schools, applying to law school, medical school, MBA, and PhD programs, GPA is the number one criterion for the programs you are applying to. EC/research experience is secondary.

@haasbear what? I haven’t been rude to anyone. I love this forum and if anything I’ve said has rubbed someone the wrong way that totally isn’t my intention. I agree that grades aren’t everything! ECs and everything is holistic, it’s just the “chance me” was useful early on, and was a way to structure your next few semesters and gain general tips on where to apply. I love this site! I also fully respect everyone’s ability to post whatever they chose, no hostility here.

I love Haas, and everything about the culture. It saddens me that I made you feel as if I don’t follow its principals, I was only stating my opinion. A chance me 2 weeks before decisions come out is silly to me, and that’s why I said it was. I’m sorry if I offended anyone in that post or any post I’ve made for that matter. I will work on my post etiquette and grow from this. This site is amazing I hope others do not feel as if I disrespect them in any way, regardless of the fact that everything is anonymous.

@bruins8clap I agree with you about the importance of GPA.

What I am saying is that schools like UCB looks at the holistic view of your application. Schools like UCLA cares more about GPA, but you could still be admitted with a slightly lower GPA (3.7s-3.8s). I am just saying that GPA is not everything, or else UCLA and UCB would admit all the 4.0s. I am sure that hi st admitting the 4.0 people will fill their spots, but what’s the point of reviewing applications then?

@sagaciousforever I think a key thing we don’t have information to with respect to the data is the 25-75 percentile range GPA per major of applicants overall – not just the accepted applicants.

For example, UCLA applied math last year had 3.82-3.97 25-75 percentile range for accepted applicants. I am willing to bet the 25-75 percentile range for the GPA of total applicants who applied for this major was probably 3.5-4.0

I agree with @sagaciousforever. I think he meant a 3.8 might get in while a 4.0 with similar qualifications might not. At least that’s how I interpreted it.

the comments of comforting people by saying “its not about the GPA, I know 4.0s who didnt get in” is actually making me more nervous lol.

@anthro101 Please don’t stress. 4.0 applicants always have a better chance than people with a lower GPA considering if other components are similar/identical.

I am just saying that UCB admission is not only about GPA, and I hope those with a lower (3.7 to 3.8 ish) GPA applicants can be optimistic because they all have decent chances.

Wow, I had no idea such a thread even existed until now. Can’t believe it’s April already! I know I’m late to the party but please chance me? Looking at the prospective student profile for my major, it looks like I’m on the bottom end in terms of GPA :frowning:

From a CCC
Major: Business Admin
GPA: 3.78
Major GPA: 4.00
Prereqs: Completed
IGETC: Last course in process
TAP: No
EC: Series 7&66 License holder, 2+ years in financial services as registered rep
Weakness: I failed Calc 1 straight out of high school, took 4 years off and attempted to retake it but had a professor I couldn’t learn from so I dropped it with a W, retook it online instead and got an A. Took Calc 2 right after got another A. I heard Cal doesn’t like seeing any Ws on major courses?

12 more days!

Hi guys, I am an international student studying at DVC and I am applying to transfer to the media studies major in UCB. I know about the major being impacted and also that UCs place limits on how many OOS/Intl students they can admit each year. My application all things considered is fairly decent but not the most impressive. I also applied last year with a 3.5 GPA without all my prereqs/IGETC completed and got rejected (no surprise there). Taking a look at the range of GPAs accepted for my major on the UC website (3.48-3.91) for last year’s cohort, I thought I had a shot but after reading some of these forums it made me realize it really is more about a case by case basis.

GPA: 3.66
Prereqs: All completed with all As
IGETC: Completed

Extra curriculars: Worked in the restaurant industry for a year, full lieutenant in my country’s army, held multiple leadership roles in cadet school, achieved company best cadet award, athletic background (competed in Track/Field & Basketball at national level), volunteered for eldercare program and donation/food drives

Insight questions: I think they were relatively well crafted and gave them a clear understanding of how much I am willing to sacrifice to improve myself at their program and also a few personal unique experiences from my time in the army.

Possible weaknesses (?): 2 Ws, 1 NP, 1 C - all non-major courses

Any other aspiring media studies applicants out there? So nerve racking… :frowning:

@dwayneee Hi! I’m also a media studies applicant, haven’t met too many of us. Good luck to you
