@CalBear1998 Thanks so much! I listed my APs too, none of them were that great either, but at least I got some credit from them! I guess this is just last minute nerves, but thanks for the info!
Also, with a quick search on amazon, I found a few schools triangle flag things. They have everything nowadays. Good Luck!
@ashleymp TBH I find the area hard to navigate at any time, haha. I was just there for a research study a few weeks ago and finding parking was rough on just a regular Wednesday afternoon. There was a bunch of construction along Oxford and into downtown too, I hope that’s finished by now. In any case I’m going to prepare for it to be pretty crazy on Cal day, it even says on the website that all lots are open but parking will be very scarce.
Parking will be very scarce tomorrow if you don’t come by say 9:00 at the latest. Maybe even earlier. If coming after that I would suggest taking BART. Parking is free for the public lots around the area. If coming later on and you insist on driving, your best bet might be to go on SpotHero and getting a spot in that manner thru a private lot or private residence.
@GoodAfternoonSir I’ve heard great things about University Village if you have kids. It’s about a 15 minute drive to campus and 30 minutes by bus. It’s actually only 15-20 mins by bike via Rt 35. Not walking distance, but not terribly far either.
It includes one parking spot, but that’s for the whole family. So one spot between you and your spouse/dependents.
@willowstil Im a dependent. ill have my mom with me in university village. That’s ok right? I looked at the website and it seems okay for me to not have kids and have my mom live with me
@GoodAfternoonSir I agree with @ProfessorPlum168. If you’re a dependent under 18 or if your mom is dependent on you for income or caretaking purposes you might be able to swing it, but if you are an unmarried adult student with no dependents I don’t think you would qualify, even if you’re technically living with family. I’m no expert though so definitely call and ask the housing department if/when you’re admitted!
I checked out the UC Berkeley housing website and under the module called Undergrad Students it says that; “LIVING in university-owned, off-campus housing, with family member(s): Your housing option is: University Village”
I assumed that I could have my family who I consider my mom to be eligible for this. Maybe I could talk to my mom about this and see if she can become dependent, I’m just hesitant that If I do this then my financial aid would change.
Is there a way I can rent a 1 or 2 bedroom condo or apartment at Berkeley for me and my mom perhaps?
@GoodAfternoonSir Oof seems like they have conflicting information posted, or they’re just not clear enough about who they consider a “family member”. Here is the eligibility info for University Village: https://housing.berkeley.edu/stufam_elig
I don’t know much about how Berkeley determines dependency, but traditionally for tax purposes, any non-child dependent cannot make more than approx. $4,150 a year, and you must pay for more than half of the person’s support for the year. Unless your mom is actually, legitimately dependent on you for support, in my personal opinion I would shy away from attempting to alter dependency status. But again, just a layman here
But don’t fret! There are other options. Berkeley has a free housing advisory service for students: https://housing.berkeley.edu/calrentals
Housing in the area is difficult but not impossible. Once you’re admitted, definitely give the housing department a call and clarify what your options are.
@GoodAfternoonSir I’ve looked into family housing at some of the other universities and family as it relates to housing is typically defined as those who are married and/or those who have children under 18 years of age. I believe @willowstil is correct, your situation would not qualify. That’s what I understand it to be anyway.
@ashleymp@willowstil Awww. The rates are too good to be true, too bad I won’t be able to get this opportunity. I think you said you were married ashley? I think you qualify. You should take advantage because the rates are great compared to other off campus housing options.
@GoodAfternoonSir Yeah it’s a bummer, the rates are unbelievable. I pay 1400 for a tiny crappy bedroom in the bay, lol. But I am really glad that they have that option for some folks. Can you imagine going to Berkeley full time while raising a family? I have the utmost respect for student parents.
@Glycogenolysis Soc major here! What do you want to do with your major?
It’s so close, I have to stop myself from thinking about it too much or I throw myself into a minor panic. My boss put the decision date on the calendar in our office which was sweet but also now there’s even more pressure lol
Anyone else get a mini heart attack when you check the portal and in big font it says “status update” but then in much smaller font says “your application is received and currently under review”…
