I used to think AA degrees didn’t have much bearing but have altered my stance. I think it depends. Having six AA degrees is something they will take under consideration, especially if you’re a first gen student or are coming from a difficult background. It shows perseverance and follow-through. Completion and recognition is a powerful motivator. You should be very proud of your accomplishment. As Brian said, it’s not a major factor but it will definitely account for something.
@HaasieBear ok thanks, because it will raise my gpa
@Ohm888 yeah that’s what I was thinking. Basically I always ask myself one question. What would you look for if you were a college admission officer? You’d want something that catches your eye of course and become interested in. This is what I want. Now I’m not saying this is the only reason I’m getting 6 degrees and an honors certificate before transferring. The areas that I’m majoring in will not only give me a deeper understanding that ties into areas of business but areas of law too. In the future I’d like to apply to law school and I believe that the areas I’ve chosen will help me be a more complete and understanding individual. Also I just love learning new things everyday and it’s really fascinating how many different perspectives and ideas you can learn in a single day let alone a year or two. If you read my previous posts you’ll understand a little bit of what I’ve went through in life. However, as briank and hopesolo have advised me, I will talk more about how the situations in my past shaped me to become a stronger individual with a thirst to show what I’m made of. These degrees are a testament to my work ethic while managing a business and bringing food to the table which includes my mother and sister. I just hope Berkeley can realize what I am and give me a chance to show them what I can do.
The interviews are online right?
Right.
Do you have to ABOLSUTELY report your AP test scores from high school as a transfer student on the general app? Can I just leave them off? I did pretty bad on several of them. @briank82
Hey sorry if i missed this, but how really likely are you to be accepted if you are applying for transfer from another state like…in the east coast? Is it really rare, even if you have the stats and all prereq? Thanks!
I know a few years back they were only accepting from CCCs, but a few have gotten in from out of state these last couple of years. I would say the odds are stacked against you, but it’s not a definite no. You might want to consider Econ to hedge your bets if your sights are on Berkeley.
Did you guys have to report your AP scores? @Ohm888
It’s not mandatory unless listed in the application.
@Ohm888 The application didn’t say it required, but someone said it would jeopardize my chances if I didn’t report them?
If you got a 3 you should report because you’ll at least get credit, if nothing else. If all you have are 2s and lower you do not have to report them. It’s your choice. Keep in mind the first send to any college will include all scores, passing and non-passing. Supposedly after the first send you can opt to cherry-pick the scores you want sent.
Scores of 2 or 1 will not hinder your chances FWIW.
The only exception to what @Ohm888 said in #411 is that if you took AP Macro Econ / AP Micro Econ and got a 3 and it was a required course for your major, well don’t bother reporting it. You need 4+ In both classes in order to bypass the ECON 1 class at say Berkeley (not sure about other places). So if you needed to take the class, although you would get credit initially, the credit would be totally useless since once you take the class at Berkeley, the AP credit is voided. The credit would be ok though if you never ever again wanted to take Econ or upper level courses that required Econ. This scenario is true of AP Psych and I think AP Lang and AP Lit as well, but double check, different for each university, different for each school.
Yes @ProfessorPlum168 is correct. Each UC college/school and even major has its own rules as to how AP will be awarded in terms of credit. If a college/major says a score of 4 on AP X duplicates Course X then you will lose the course units if you took the course. However, another UC might say that the score of 4 on AP X does not duplicate Course X and you need to take it. In that case you will get both AP and course credit. So your unit count will be different at each UC. It’s very confusing. Long story short any 2s or lower will not impact anything.
And FWIW I have an email from the main UC overboard back when I applied stating they award credit based on first taken, so 5 units on an AP exam will be kept and the course units, if taken second, will be omitted, assuming they see a duplication. Not really relevant in the long run, I suppose.
@Ohm888 Can you explain what you mean by “Keep in mind the first send to any college will include all scores, passing and non-passing” If I don’t choose to report my scores they still see it?
@ProfessorPlum168 So if you took a lot of AP tests but got lower than a 2 you don’t have to report any of them if you didn’t want to?
@FutureHaasBear no need to report anything below 3 since you won’t get credit for any of those APs. Even if you got 3s you don’t have to report them unless you wanted to.
Do the interviewers have access to your application?
no. They’re simply volunteer alum.
@panda_juice. It’s rare. Not impossible but very rare.
p.s. interviewers are alum or staff (mine was a staff member)
