UC Berkeley Haas 2019 Transfer Thread

Did anyone else’s email have your first and middle name in the “Hello X Y” instead of first and last name?

@Makemeabear Yes it had my middle name too. So we sign up for slate 12 hours before the interview?

@zk00 It sounds like they will provide us a registration link? Or something similar to a Zoom link 12 hours before. I’m not 100% sure about the method they’re using, and it states this is their first year using Slate.

Can someone please help me to understand why some people need to go through the interviews, while some are not?

Thanks,

I didn’t get an interview request. Is this a bad sign?

Based on last year up here, most who got interviews got in - but not everyone. That I remember. Not getting an interview could still get you in. As I recall some non-interviewees got in. I can’t say 100%, but that’s how I seem to remember it. The interviews used to be more about figuring out how well you spoke English, then it branched out in subsequent years. Keep the faith. It would seem to me they can’t fit in everyone who gets accepted into these interview slots.

If I remember correctly from last year, what was being passed around was that they would attempt to interview all eligible applicants.

I don’t remember what the invite timeline was, but if you haven’t gotten one, don’t worry and have faith like @Ohm888 said.

If you did get one - relax, breathe, and show your authentic self. It’s a chance to share more of your story and personality, so have fun with it!

@hopesolo thanks for the input! I already feel myself getting nervous.

Is there an archive of previous questions that have been asked?

@Ohm888

“The interview process doesn’t apply to all Haas applicants. A select group of transfer students and continuing students do receive invitations for an on-campus (continuing) or virtual (transfer) interview”.

“These interviews are conducted by either former Haas alumni or members of the undergraduate office. As far as I can tell, it’s random which group you end up speaking with. However, the goal is the same: evaluate your cultural fit with the Haas School and try to get a sense if there is more to you than your grades and application made clear”.

“In the vast majority of cases (pretty much all), if you get an interview it means the information and grades you provided during the application process wasn’t quite good enough to easily say yes to. It doesn’t mean you’re incompetent either. I’ve interviewed many applicants that were very impressive (you would expect them to get in with no problems) but the school had questions about them for one reason or another.”

Is this true? Because I worked really hard to communicate who I am and what I’ve done in this world. Would this mean that haas thinks they have all the information they need to make a decision for me?

Got this info from a blog post, I know it’s not from a credible webstie but it provided some interesting info I’d like to verify with you guys.

@hopesolo It’s great to see you again hope! I hope your enjoying your time at UC Berkeley? While you’re here I was wondering how you like your experience so far? Anything you’d like to share with the haas community perhaps?

Also, I’m gonna try to get in touch with you through this site if I do get in, since I would like some advice for my first year over there. Wish me luck!

@GoodAfternoonSir Don’t stress yourself out trying to read into the interviews. Depending on how many individuals follow through with reserving a time slot by the Sunday at 4pm deadline, you may still receive an invitation. ??

I’ll be honest I was in the last class and from my fellow transfers if I recall correctly everyone who got in got an interview. Now, the difference is that the years prior to mine not everyone who got in, got an interview.

Don’t let this scare you, there are plenty of opportunities and in hindsight I put way too much stress on myself through this process.

@robinghood Ok now i’m REALLY scared lol. I hope these guys give me an interview.

@GoodAfternoonSir the truth is we have no idea why they choose some people. I wouldn’t count yourself out. Think about it. Berkeley never likes to show its hand until the end. If it was this cut and dried, they’d be no suspense.

Do any former Haas transfers know what I should expect for the interview question-wise? Also, should I wear formal attire and have a webcam?

@greatiog Not a transfer already but I will be interviewing this Tuesday. I’m going to dress business casual as I would for a real interview. No suit and tie, but maybe a dress shirt and tie/no tie.

I would definitely have a webcam ready as all the virtual interviews are video chats.

I did not receive an invitation for interview yesterday, but are there multiple rounds of interviews? Last year I saw that people in the thread were getting invitations in April.

@thoges hope you’re right. Can anyone verify this?

Good luck to everyone applying this semester. I hope to meet some of you in the near future! First, I would highly suggest skimming through last year’s thread to see the types of questions that were asked. The interviewer has no knowledge of your application and it can be anyone from faculty, a professor, but most likely an alum. Last year there were 2 rounds sent out so don’t feel discouraged if you didn’t get an interview. I was part of the 2nd round and I had a very strong application. Admissions only has so many resources to work with during this time. I can also attest to what @robinghood said. From everyone I’ve met in the class, they were all interviewed. The transfer community is very small as you already know and admissions has moved more towards implementing this into their process - they’ve mentioned this a few times during transfer panels. Lastly, as @hopesolo mentioned, and I absolutely agree, be yourself! Good luck to everyone and relax. Haas already sees something in you!
