@transferszn I couldn’t agree more.
If the interview were a shoe-in, they would change policy. No way does Berkeley ever show its hand in advance. Initially it started as a way to gauge English language skills and was mostly directly at internationals. It’s broadened, but people have gotten in without the interview and people who get the interview have not gotten in. If you’re an international student, a good part is probably wanting to hear you talk.
Maybe if you all understood how the interview processed works, you would stop putting so much emphasis on the interview. They are conducted by an Alumnist who has no connections to the admissions office. They are simply checking whether an individual matches with the way he or she has presented themselves in their essays. An interview is an easy way to tell whether an individual has lied in their essays, or even had somebody else write the essays for them. It’s also a way to check whether you did your homework in Haas by asking why you would like to attend the University. Hence why the university needs “significant information” before making a final decision. An admissions officer is the individual who presents your application to the committee. Sometimes the committee or the admissions officer find an applicantion to have discrepancies. Maybe a gpa doesn’t match up with their SAT score or extra curricular doesn’t seem reasonable. Instead of denying that individual, they may request an interview to find out more information. This is standard practice for most highly selective business undergraduate schools. Some request all applicants provide an interview online, in person, or over the phone, while others request at random. Some institutions do not even bother with interviews. Instead, they require you to provide requested documents. Again an interview is not a signal of admissions. You can still be denied or accepted whether you have been interview or not. Those who argue that an interview is a signal of admittance are simply wrong. Golden rule is not to truth every source you read on a blog, forum, etc. The only verified information available to all applicants at this time is that in 2018, out of the 736 eligible applicants, 104 were admitted. Out of the 92 students who enrolled, 91 were community college students. UC Berkeley official statement on interviews reads, “The information submitted as part of the written applications typically gives us the full picture of a student’s experience and aspirations. However in some cases, additional information is needed and Haas may invite a transfer applicant to interview with a Haas alumni or staff person. Interviews are by invitation only.”
Honestly, you all should stop stressing over interviews and wait till April 19th. All this point all that matters is whether you believe that your applicantion is strong. It’s up to the Univeristy to decide your fate. There is no point in arguing. My comments are directed at those who seek the truth and not those who are fixed on the fact that interviews matter.
@WyattCross let’s move on from this convo. Thank you.
@Ohm888 Nevermind, I spoke with my colleges and they said my GPA verification for cal grant was completed by my college automatically on early february, so all good.
@Trashception I believe all decisions are released on that one day, not on a rolling basis.
MODERATOR’S NOTE: The Forum Champion instructed that users were to move on from that conversation. The instruction was ignored, so I have deleted several posts. Please remember that instructions by moderators and forum champions are not merely suggestions.
@lialec okay thanks I will try my best to not log in every night just to check haha
It is the beginning of the end…
Whatever happens, just remember that each and every one of you are amazing students and deserves to get into this school. If you don’t get accepted, well that’s their loss, and if you do, rejoice and take advantage of everything this school has to offer. May you succeed in your goals forevermore.
There is no point checking the portal every day. You will be notified via email when the decision comes out. So do not panic and just do something you enjoy before the decision reveals.
@sagaciousforever haha okay thanks for the advice. I wasn’t sure about the email notification bc of UCSB never sending one, but it’s nice to know I can live my life away from the portal.
Berkeley decisions are coming out April 19. This was publicly announced. Haas will not be earlier.
Just a couple more weeks! Hang in there, but in the meantime here are a couple recommendations:
- Spend some extra time with friends and family - Whatever happens, things will change very quickly and this time next year, you may not get to see them as much anymore!
- Do something you enjoy - You've been cooped up writing essays, reading College Confidential, and stressing about interviews. It's time to get outside and take your mind off things - you've earned it and you deserve it. Participate in an ice cream eating contest, go for a hike, or play some boardgames with friends!
- Give thanks and show gratitude - this one is huge. Say thank you to the countless people who have helped you get to where you are today. Take your parents out for dinner for giving you a place to stay all these years or buy a drink for that friend who has seen you through this entire process. Write an email to that professor who you really clicked with or that soccer coach who taught you about perseverance. Whatever happens, know we couldn't have done it without them.
And last but not least - get some rest! At this point, you’ve done everything that you can and it’s time to give yourself a pat on the back and trust the process.
We are all every excited and looking forward to seeing those who are accepted very soon! And as always, here as well for anyone who may have any questions.
Cheers and good luck!
@hopesolo I wish I could relax! haha my spring break just ended so I’m back on my grind make sure my GPA doesn’t dip. Two exams today and one on Thursday… rip
@Trashception My spring break starts on April 13 and ends on April 21st. Which means I’ll get my decision during spring break. I wonder if Berkeley hosts tours on weekends. Because I want to schedule one in advance so that if I’ll get in, I’ll be able to check it out the very next day. I will literally just take two school days off after spring break to celebrate with friends and family.
Same I’ve got two exams to do today too. Gotta keep those A’s lol.
@hopesolo I’ve got a bunch of work to do during spring break. That’s what I get for taking 10 classes haha. I’ll pretty much be pre-occupied for the whole week.
I’m also going to apply for University Village family-student housing immediately if I get admitted. As spots run out very quick I believe. Good thing I scheduled an appointment with my berkeley advisor a few days after I hopefully get admitted.
@GoodAfternoonSir nice good on you for thinking agead. I wish i had an “in” with a Cal advisor but I don’t. Good luck on your exams but I’m sure you don’t need it haha
Woohoo! Just got my final grade for Calculus 2 and it is an A. I made sure to contact the UC Application Center and log into the student portals of the UC’s I’m applying and contact their admissions directly about this Transfer Coursework Update
The UC Application Center promised me that the each UC I applied to will receive this information in time. So, I hope this grade helps me out when deciding if they should admit me or not hehe.
@GoodAfternoonSir Well done!!
Hi Everyone,
I’m curious if anyone has any experience applying or being accepted as a transfer to Haas as a non-traditional / older / returning student, or if some of the Alumni or current Haas students have met older undergrads on campus?
I’m a returning non-traditional student applying to Haas as a transfer from a community college. I did all of the pre-reqs and have a 3.7 GPA, but I also have 15 years of leadership experience in the hospitality industry and work full-time. I’ve noticed in the Haas profile of admitted students there always seems to be one or two older students in the range of ages. I have no idea what my chances of being admitted are but I did not get an interview request, which seems after reading this thread might be a bad sign. Anyway just curious if you all have any stories or information that might shed light on my chances.
Thank You
