Haas loves older non-trad.
Not getting an interview request doesn’t mean one thing or the other.
Hi @DanS1986, I am also returning student who left school for about 15 years. I did have leadership experience since I was a personal assistant for CEO, Chief Representative, Ambassador. However, I just did not spend enough time to have someone correct my essays both insight questions for UCs and the supplemental one for HAAS. I only hope they could focus on my character revealed from my stories instead of focusing on my grammar or writing skill.
I do not get the interview either. Honestly, if I fail Berkely, I think they missed a good student and it will be a good destiny to make me move to LA or Irvine. I visited 3 UCs around the SoCal and really love the neighborhood in Irvine. Besides, so far UCR offered me a good financial aid package, even much more than SJSU after tuition and fees.
Hope you will not stress yourself much to get into HAAS.
@Bibihcmvn I hope you get into Haas. They’re pretty holistic so they really scrutinize every single part of the application from top to bottom. I love that about them so much.
With your experience, I’m sure you’ll get accepted. Please let us know what decision you get when the time comes
@GoodAfternoonSir Right now I really hope to get in HAAS so I can drop 1 class that I am taking because I want to focus on starting a new business. But after visiting UC Irvine, and UCLA too, I really understand why many students choose UCLA instead of Berkely. In my case, the only hardship is that my whole family must move too that requires looking for rent, packing stuff, etc. A bit struggle since I am lazy. So now I just let God arrange everything for me…hihi…
Thanks for your nice comments. I wish you the best too.
@Bibihcmvn I think I’m in the same situation you’re in.
The reason why I really want to get into Berkeley is that my whole family lives there and my mom and I want to reunite with them and have a place together.
I visited UCLA and it is gorgeous, it’s near Marymount High School where all the celebrities kids are enrolled and it’s in Brentwood, a very expensive place to be in. But I feel like Berkeley will accommodate mine and my families needs so that’s why I’d like to get in there the most, otherwise, UCLA is a very tempting place to enroll in.
Hi Everyone!
I found this video interesting and comforting! Take a look!
@DanS1986 your age will not tilt your admissions chances negatively just because you are older. In fact, your age allows you to have more unique experiences that can add value to your application.
3.7 GPA is on the lower side of the average transfer applicant. They may look at what classes (i.e. were they pre reqs that negatively impacted your GPA?) or the trend of your grades and course load. I would say that your supplemental application is what will tilt the decision in your favor as they use this as the primary means to understand who you are.
As @ohm888 said, don’t worry about interviews. Haas hasn’t really shown their cards on why or why not they interview applicants.
Best of luck!
Thank You @Ohm888 and @RRIII2019 I really appreciate your comments and insight. I really hope to see @Bibihcmvn and everyone else on campus this fall.
@Ohm888 I’m curious about how/where you learned that Haas loves non-traditional applicants? I’ve heard this same thing from other advisors but I’ve never been able to find much literature from the university about non-traditional students. Thank You for your advice.
@DanS1986 hmmm, well I was a student on the campus so I guess I first heard it there and then here. TBH, I’m not sure exactly where I heard it but I know I’ve heard it and more than once. They like diversity in all its forms. Sorry I can’t be of more help.
Is your GPA in the range?
@Ohm888 What’s the range?
@sagaciousforever https://haas.berkeley.edu/undergrad/community/class-profile/ All the stats r on here
Honestly I feel so down bc I feel like since I didn’t get an interview I’m going to be rejected anyways. Does anyone know anyone personally who got in without an interview?
@Ohm888 thank you, I was just curious. I appreciate your willingness to answer all of my questions.
I have 3.7 GPA so it’s in the range but in the lower side, I’m hoping that since I have a long professional career and worked 40-50 hours a week while taking night classes to get that GPA they’ll take that into consideration.
@neilsola Thank you for the website.
*1183 applicants did not show planned completion of the admission requirements and were considered ineligible. Of the 736 eligible applicants, 104 (14.13%) were offered admission.
This disqualifies me and RIP for UCB. Missing prereqs. I could not take the second English composition class unless in a CC and I spent my freshman year summer interning. My essays, resume, internship/work experiences are all factors that will help me to stand out. My current University’s second English (upper-division English) does not transfer to UCB’s second English.
I will probably be in better standing if I were to apply from a CC, but I am not. It is so harsh that UCB just considers you as “ineligible” or “unqualified”. I think they should take some of those “ineligible” applicants to replace those “eligible” applicants who have lower stats/overall competitiveness/not a good fit.
Best of luck to the rest of the applicants!
@DanS1986 Fear not and have faith A fantastic classmate of mine and fellow transfer is over the age of 50 and was admitted! It’s very doable and this year’s transfer class is wonderfully diverse, as it usually is. Some of us took a direct or accelerated route through community college to Haas, and others of us have families or decades of work experience. What’s more important is that everyone brings a unique set of perspectives and experiences to contribute to the Haas community, just as you and many other applicants do.
Have to agree with @hopesolo ! Since @hopesolo and I arrived at Haas, that diversity is something we see everyday that ultimately adds to the transfer experience. Everyone brings something new to the table, and it’s just so humbling to learn so much from everyone else.
@hopesolo @lialec
If I may ask, did you find Haas courses were really challenging or some sort of jaw-dropping that made ccc courses were like a walk in the park? Last fall I sit next to a Berkeley graduate who planned to switch her career. She said that the class we took together was quite challenging, and as far as she recalled Berkeley GE classes were easier. I understand that she might just try to be humble.
If you would share, what were the most challenging courses at Haas so far?
^^^ Good question!
I am preparing for the worst, i.e. no admission from any UC; so, I am now preparing my summer schedule for my second year at ccc. Which courses should I take for the summer short sessions (6 weeks)?
a. linear algebra (3 units) and calculus 3 (5 units), or
b. linear algebra (3 units) and an honors course (3 units), or
c. calculus 3 (5 units) and an honors course (3 units), or
d. calculus 3 (5 units) and intro to computer science (4 units), or
e. linear algebra (3 units) and intro to computer science (4 units)
I am tempted to take route A, but is it manageable? I’d like to maintain a 4.00 gpa while showing a rigorous schedule to UC’s for next year.
If I have to stay another year at ccc, my goal is to take 3 additional honors courses, and all math & all computer science courses available at ccc. I am done with both IGETC & prerequisites.
Any suggestions?
