UC Berkeley Haas 2019 Transfer Thread

@sagaciousforever do you mind if I ask which 4-year university you are from? Just curious

Although, doesn’t your university offer any English course corresponds to a title with “Critical Thinking and Intermediate Composition”?

@sagaciousforever Yup! USC is my #3 college choice. my #1 is UC Berkeley Haas, #2 is UCLA Business Econ, and #3 is USC Marshall.

I do have one option for you to get the english class done but it will cost you. The University of Phoenix offers classes to anyone interested but they do not receive financial aid and will have to pay in full. This is how I was able to take 30 units during fall 2018 as my district’s policy is the maximum I can take is 24, so I needed to take other classes without officially enrolling in the university. FIRST, Contact your own college counselor THEN contact UC Berkeley and see if there’s an english class at university of phoenix that can fulfill R1B English Requirement. FINALLY, contact university of phoenix enrollment representatives so they can put you in the class. The sooner you do this the better as spots run out.

Yes, it’s a hassle but it’s better than waiting another year, you save more money in the long run and this really is an emergency so I think you should go for it.

@AeroDE Pepperdine. There are upper division English classes but none of them are transferable to UCB.

Anyways, my friend and I are the only two people who applied to UCs as a junior transfer. Private schools would be way easier for us because they allow you to miss pre-req. I hope the admission will still consider me.

To be honest, I do not like UC’s second English requirement because they made it so hard for non-CC transfers, and I searched that most private university’s second English class is not transferable to UCs.

That means that you will have to take it at CC during the summer, but if you still get rejected that means you are taking that summer class for nothing.

I sincerely hope the UCs could be like private schools such as USC and Emory, as they are more lenient on pre-req. Even you are missing one or two pre-req, you could still be admitted if they see you as a good fit.

Why can’t UCs allow non-CC transfer to take any missing pre-req at Cal? I would do it even if it takes me an extra quarter to an extra year to graduate. However, simply turning down applicants because of pre-req is just brutal and unreasonable.

@sagaciousforever UCLA really paves the way for investment banking, something I am kinda interested in if I don’t pursue law school after graduating. Great school, really friendly towards transfers, ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL PLACE (Visited in the summer) and most importantly, GREAT FOOD. THE FOOD IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF A UNIVERSITY LOL

@sagaciousforever What puts you in an additional disadvantage is that in-state community college students are prioritized over anyone else, which includes private schools, state schools then out-of-state schools.

@GoodAfternoonSir I really appreciate your advice. Is the class that you are talking about online class?

I do not have to wait for another year though since I do not go to CC. I could still stay if admission results don’t go well. Pepperdine is a Top 50 university and the education is decent. I applied to UCs, USC, and Emory mainly because I want more choices for the undergraduate experience that I could only experience once.

@GoodAfternoonSir UCLA was a my dream school back in high school. I visited the campus a couple of times and met my friend last semester. I like it there, but UCB cares more about its students. At UCLA, you are just a number (no offense). This is because UCB cares more about the holistic view of an applicant, while UCLA focuses way more on GPA.

Also, personally I think Business Economics is harder than Business Administration.

@sagaciousforever Yeah, they’re offered online for your convenience. They also offer branches that you could visit to complete coursework such as mine which is 10 minutes away from where I live.

True, if results don’t go well you can still stay at Pepperdine, it’s a great school. Plus there might be issues with transferring units if you go to a UC in the first place but yeah if you want to complete the English Requirement to attend the UC’s I’d say go for it. It all depends on how much you really want to go at the end of the day.

@GoodAfternoonSir I think UCs do not accept classes that I take this summer, so even I take that English class now it is probably too late to finish it.

@sagaciousforever I feel like that’s the case for most of the UC’s lol. There are just so many students that you really have to go out of your way to become a unique individual and be remembered within the community. Except for UC Davis, you are definitely treated as a family member over there.

@sagaciousforever Nah they offer 7-week classes or 8-week classes or even shorter that are accepted by the UC’s. They typically don’t offer full 16-week classes, which is why I’m saying you should verify if any of the classes at Phoenix that is available are accepted for English R1B. You’ll be able to finish it and have the grade posted to your transcript before June 1st definitely

@GoodAfternoonSir I hope that you will make UCB. We might go to USC together if that’s the school that we only get accepted by.

@GoodAfternoonSir UCB will post their decisions on 4/19 though. Also my school only offers one Business Calculus, so I only took Business Calculus on the first semester of my freshman year. Therefore, I do not think I am going to do that.

USC and Emory will be my goals from now.

@sagaciousforever Thank you for the kind words, by actively trying to resolve the situation you show your commitment to attending a UC. Remember, there is always another way. When I failed my Accuplacer exam for mathematics and was placed in Pre-Algebra at the beginning of college, I studied for 6 months thoroughly in Algebra, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. Then I took Calculus 1 at Phoenix and got an A due to mastering the subject beforehand.

What I’m trying to say is, when someone tells you-you just can’t do something, you should take their words with a grain of salt, there’s always another way and if you end up not succeeding at one point, at least you can tell yourself that hey I tried. Live with no regrets.

@sagaciousforever so it’s Pepperdine. Why not just say it instead of secrecy? Anyway, you’ve raised this complaint about 20 times now. It is what it is. The UCs are very anal about English writing. Your other courses listed are the equivalent of freshman level, not transfer level. I’m not sure how long you knew about this but you could have taken an online English course to fulfill it over winter intersession or taken it spring term. Luckily you have other options. Or you can always stay at Pepperdine. It’s a great university.

@AeroDE the blended comp/critical thinking is a created course for IGETC. It’s not offered basically anywhere else, although two articulated composition courses work for general ed if coming from a non-CCC.

@sagaciousforever as long as they see that you are taking the class in progress, there won’t be an issue. I’m currently taking Calculus 2 in progress and even if my class ends on April 8th, if my class ended on June 1st for example, I would still be eligible for admission due to being expected to complete all pre-reqs by this spring.

@Ohm888 I did not want to say it earlier in case someone who knows me detects me. It could be an admission counselor, a professor, or a student because there are so many traits that we expressed through our words.

Yes, you are right. I feel like that I applied to UCs to challenge their minimum requirement. I wanted to apply for UCs at the first semester of my sophomore year so it was a little bit late to catch up with the online classes.

Before speaking to you, I honestly thought that UC are like USC and Emory, as they are more lenient on pre-req. Even you are missing one or two pre-req, you could still be admitted if they see you as a good fit.

That’s why I applied to UCs and I have good essays. Honestly, I would be willing to spend an extra year at UCB or UCLA if they accept me. I just do not understand why it is so unfair to non-CC applicants.

You said you worked with an advisor for a year. If from a CCC or UC they failed you if they did not catch that.

@Ohm888 What do you mean by “failed”?

@Ohm888 I always double check the claims made by my own counselors and advisors and verify if what they’re saying is correct. Turns out, they always tell me something that is completely wrong, unfortunately. That’s just the way it is sadly. One of my advisors actually told me that I can take one of the Pre-reqs the summer after being “admitted”.
