UC Berkeley Transfer Thread 2018

hi guys.
would anyone chance me? much appreciated.

UCSD student (previously: CA comm. college transfer)
major: philosophy
GPA: 4.0 in major, 3.93 overall
IGETC: yes
applying: UCLA, UCB, UCR, UCSB
reason given for xferring from UC: closeness to family north of san diego

**things I mentioned in essays/b preparation for major Q:

  • 4.0 GPA in philosophy with 5 upper-divs and four lower-divs
  • invited to decision theory (formal epistemology) grad seminar
  • got A+ in that, also invited to take core epistemology grad seminar in spring
  • phil. club + reading group involvement + wrote paper for honors colloquium @ CC
  • applying to 2018 summer programs for underrepresented groups in philosophy
    (2) educational opportunity Q:
  • really went into detail about having access to the “grad student” experience from seminar
  • also mentioned fostering good relationship w the prof who invited me to take it (i.e., A+ in her upper-div class)
    (3) significant challenge Q:
  • first-gen undergrad + parent to newborn daughter
  • upshot = adapting to learning curve of uni/mandatory multitasking/time management
    (4) strong candidate Q:
  • contributing diverse perspective an underrepresented minority in philosophy (female major of mexican descent)
  • mentioned faculty that work in my area of specialty at each school
  • upshot = willingness to seize opportunity to become good philosopher by association

etc
demographic info:
mexican descent
30k parents’ gross income
CA native
female phil. major
first-gen undergrad
new parent

  • notably i had to take two quarters off because of my pregnancy. (my daughter was born on halloween, so fall quarter just wasn’t happening, and now i’m on leave to take care of her until spring because my commute to UCSD is 2hrs each way.) the possibility that this will rule me out as an applicant scares me!
    academia-related:
    logic co-instructor @ CC
philosophy tutor (more generally) @ CC
phil. + history of science reading group @ UCSD
philosophy club @ UCSD and CC
won scholarship for philosophy paper @ CC
set for graduating “with highest honors” via senior thesis @ UCSD
    co-curricular:
organize annual crime victims’ rights march in my hometown (3yrs)
fundraising for local non-profit theater (3yrs)
volunteer docent at living museum (1yr)
    literacy council volunteer (2yrs)
    starbucks barista (1yr)

Hello brothers. I have risen from the ashes to get chanced so I can sleep well at night. Don’t mind the UCLA avatar…it’s just for show, promise

Applied: UC Berkeley (Social Welfare), UCLA (Psychology) – So much for applying broadly!

CCC Transfer
Major: Social Welfare
Transferable GPA: 3.80 Overall, 4.0 in Major
IGETC: Completed
Major Prep: Done

EC/Awards/Educational Prep:

  • District-level elected position (ongoing)
  • Student government/campus initiatives (ongoing)
  • Research Assistant in political psychology lab at Stanford (7 months)
  • Clinical Neuroscience Intern at Stanford’s School of Medicine
  • President of Black Student Union (ongoing)
  • Chair of Black History Month committee (ongoing through Feb)
  • Student Affiliate of the Dean of Student Affairs Hiring Committee
  • Educational Preparation Programs: UCB TAP, Starting Point Mentorship Program, EOPS, Honors Program, UCLA TAP
  • A lot of work experience
  • 3 scholarships
  • SSCCC Resolution Author

PIQ: I’d give it a solid 9/10. I worked on it for months and I managed to get feedback from I think…5 different counselors? Two from UCLA, one from Berkeley TAP, and two from my own college. They all thought the responses were really good.

Other demographic stuff: First-generation American citizen, immigrant family, low-income, Black female

Hey peoples, Psychology major here
I’m a California Community College student
Applied to UC Berkeley, UCLA, Davis, and San Diego
GPA: 4.0 (dean’s highest honors for past 4 semesters)
Major GPA 4.0
Will have 60 units done at end of fall 2017
Taking emt course in spring to fill time
EC: weak; last volunteer work was in High School spend most of my time working about 25-30 hrs a week. Started at entry level and now in beginning stages of management. Work at some job for over two years.
Personal statement: hope to make up for weak ec with background info. Parents are both addicts and i was raised by my grandparents. First generation college student. Independent income and not a good high school student. Have since changed my ways and have a 4.0 for last 5 semesters (Dean’s highest honors).

I know Berkeley is heavy on EC but I hope my persoal statements and grades can help neutralize the weak EC. Berkeley is definitely my number one choice.

I hope none of you get in, you nerds.

Ciao :x

@Psychiatrist If I’m not mistaken, I saw you in one of the fall 2016 transfer threads. Did you get accepted to one of the UCs two years ago?

@AdultSwimFan Haha oh no! I was either a senior in high school or a freshman in college who was being nosy and asking questions on the transfer threads way too early. This is my first year applying

This is a bit early, but to any prospective Philosophy transfers - please get in contact with me! I transferred to Cal in the fall of 2016, and I have a good sense of what the other departments in the UC system are like, in case you’re stuck deciding between schools.

Best of luck to everyone! (This thread is much lest active than last year’s thread - weird!)

So they give the option of switching my major, and for UCSD I just figured out as a transfer you can’t double major in economics if you didn’t apply as an economics major, but my major GPA for econ is pretty week, because I have to retake Microeconomics, But Macro and Calc 1 are both A’s, I’m taking Calc 2 right now. So I applied as a Political Science major, my major GPA for that is a 4.0, with Economics as an alternate major, should I switch the two around? Do they base the decisions for acceptance on major? Or is it you get admitted and then they admit you to your major or alternate major? Because I don’t want to jeopardize my chances.

Thanks in advance!

@hailey5799 You get admitted to your major. Let’s say that you decide to switch the two around and you don’t get accepted as an Economics major, I think you could be accepted to Political Science because Economics is a capped major. If you want to double major, I would switch them around and if you don’t get into Econ, you could still get in for Political Science.

UCSD’s stated policy is here: http://registrar.ucsd.edu/catalog/09-10/front/UgrdPol.html, scroll down to “Admission as a Transfer Applicant” and then “Impacted Majors” for their exact wording!

But are you asking for Berkeley? Berkeley also admits by major, but you don’t pick an alternate major.

Hey guys, I know it’s really early but apps open up soon and I can’t wait to get started with the application process!

Will Berkeley release decisions before April?

If I already finished igetc and all my major prerequisites, does whether I finished the UC pathways affect the decision?

@Psychiatrist Oh! Welcome aboard! I hope you get into your dream school! and I hope the rest of you don’t get in…

@rubberducky123 Judging by previous transfer threads, Berkeley will not be releasing transfer decisions prior to April. Transfer decisions will likely go out April 27!

@sixsamurai From what I’ve read, finishing a UC pathway will help you but not finishing won’t necessarily harm you if you’ve already finished IGETC and all major pre-reqs. I don’t know how big of a boost finishing it provides, but I don’t think it’s that big.

@gonewiththeair Hey! Thanks for your reply. I got one more question. I’m planning to complete the reading&composition courses in summer, but Berkeley requires that to be completed by the spring semester. Am I very likely to get rejected then?

@rubberducky123 It’s a requirement, so unfortunately I don’t think you will be admitted for the fall. However, I think you could be offered admission for spring 2019 so if you’re an otherwise strong applicant you may have that option.

Hi everyone! Here are my stats can you please chance me

Major: Sociology
GPA: 3.77
EC: very involved, Vice President of student government, IOC/ICC Chair, President of a club, on campus student ambassador, worked multiple jobs, scholarship recipient
Major Reqs: Done
IGETC: Done

Pls change me!!

@UCWinner Your GPA is within the range admitted to fall 2017 and it’s quite a bit higher than the 25th percentile, so I think you’re good there. However, sociology is only a 23% acceptance rate so there’s no guarantee but you look like a strong applicant!
