I was rejected from Davis today…I’m actually very worried now, as Davis was the one UC I was semi-confident that I could get into. Doesn’t this mean that I really shouldn’t get my hopes up for other UCs? I didn’t think my stats were terrible, but now I’m questioning myself.
In-state, competitive high school
GPA: 4.3
ACT: 33
SAT: 1370
APs: 6 exams, all 4s and 5s
ECs: Great extracurriculars, also founded an organization that correlated with my major, many leadership positions, sports,
Good essays
…I’m scared, is this the end?
No, Davis already knew that you are most likely going to be accepted in a better UC university, so they want to “make room” for those with slightly lower academic performances.
Well, Idk but it could be overqualification. I got accepted in Davis today with a 1420 SAT and a couple of AP tests with 5. GPA around 4.3 (lowered due to dual enrollment courses that are unweighted). Also decent extracurriculars. In your case, I am actually thinking about the ACT vs SAT score. Which one did you take first? Because for example, if you took the ACT, got 33 and then took SAT and got 1370, that could show potential drop (according to some friends in college and some advisors).
Damn that sucks I’m pretty surprised you didn’t get in since your stats are slightly higher than mine overall (except for the SAT score) and I got in… Maybe it’s because your SAT/ACT score wasn’t high enough? I mean it’s about average for Davis but not that competitive. I don’t really think that would be a deal breaker though. There’s also the fact that your major is impacted, so that may have played a role as well? Or, as stated by someone else above, Davis might have just expected you to go to a better university. Anyways, don’t give up hope yet!
Then I really think it is potential overqualification…good luck on your other schools though! And if you really want to go to Davis, in the end there is always a chance of appeal! Don’t give up hope!
To all applicants asking if they got denied at one campus, will they be competitive at other UC campuses and the answer is YES. Each UC will review their applicants based on their criteria. Some give more weight to GPA vs Test scores vs Essays vs EC’s. It is very hard to predict how you will fare at all the UC’s since each one is looking to put together a diverse class of in-coming Freshman. Having gone through the process with both my son’s and numerous friends and relatives, you will all land on your feet and be successful where ever you go. My favorite quote is “bloom where planted” and remember where you go for Undergrad will not define you, it is what you do with the opportunities you are given that will make you successful. Best of luck.
I was rejected as well as a bio major. 4.1 GPA, 32 ACT, several varsity sports, club founder, hundreds of volunteer hours, trilingual, Hispanic and Jewish heritage (not that that matters much), interesting essays…can only get you so far these days regardless, there is still hope for the other UCs, Davis was particularly competitive this year. According to the rejection email only 5,900 out of 78,000 were admitted (7.5%).
If it helps at all, you’re not alone. Davis has been my dream school for the past four years, I even pre-requested a boarding spot for my horse at the equestrian center…I was really anticipating getting accepted as well. It sucks, but we’ll get through it and we’ll end up where we’re meant to be <3 Try not to stress too much
Son was rejected but it was definitely a reach school for him

This “overqualification” theory is really nonsense. Each school is looking for a good “fit” and maybe Davis thought something in your EC’s or essays didn’t match their unique school “flavor”? My D had 1550 SAT, 4.4GPA, leadership, rigor, great EC’s and good essays and was accepted. She is also the prototype for a Davis student (I speak with some knowledge on this as a Davis grad myself, married to a Davis grad, sister to a Davis grad etc.). I think pretty clearly there are distinct personalities of each UC campus and those don’t just happen by accident. Your waitlist or rejection probably just means that another campus will view you as a better fit and you will be happier for it!
