the thing is my counselor is not very competent. alright, here is the problem, it seems that you are going around the answer that i am trying to get.

Finishing IGETC and pre-reqs should NOT been seen as optional! - I know it is not optional, especially for IGETC, but how about for pre-reqs? i mean when i checked assist.org for philosophy, they offered only like two classes at my school. so even if i just finish one of those two pre-reqs, my admission is not in jeopardy of getting rescinded after i get accepted?
2.Most students who apply have IGETC completed. If you do not complete IGETC you will be at a disadvatage. - So, those most students have their IGETC completed by the time they apply to UCs (by summer, since you apply to UCs in the fall)? and this give you more advantage of getting accepted?
3.Most students who apply have their pre-reqs completed. If you do not complete your pre-reqs you will be at a disadvantage. - Something question as to number two, so basically if you finish pre-reqs by the time you apply, you have more advantage of getting accepted?

and thank you really for trying to lend me a hand. i just really want be in the best standing to get accepted.

If there are only two pre-reqs for your major than you should absolutely complete them both. Not completeing one of them does not mean your admission will be rescinded but it lowers your chances A LOT. When I said, in another thread, it is maybe okay to be lacking a pre-req I was referring to science majors or majors that involve a lot of pre-req classes. For example, my major has 12 pre-reqs. If you finish 11 of these you are still in good shape. Finishing 1 out of 2, however, is not good. Finish them both if at all possible.

2 & 3. Close but not exactly. You should complete IGETC/pre-reqs by the spring before you transfer, so if you are applying this coming fall, for Fall 2012 admission, you should have them completed by Spring 2012. You do not need to complete them before you apply, however, some people believe that completing them before you apply gives you a very slight advantage.

If some of the prereqs are not offered at your school then you should be fine. But, finish IGETC for sure, because you will most likely not be accepted in without it since philosophy have so few prereqs compared to other majors.

“Complete all Preparation Requirements by the end of Fall 2011…”

By the end of Fall 2011? Not Spring 2012?

"Complete at least level 3 of a foreign language. "

This means 3 semesters of foreign language right?

also, I checked the philosophy pre-reqs for UC Berkeley and none of the courses they listed are offered at either of the CCs near me. what should I do?

I called the Berkeley rep about this problem a while back and they said just write “prereqs weren’t offered at x (your school)” in the additional comments section of the supplemental app of Berk.

Level 3 of a foreign language is whatever = 3 years of language in high school.
Japanese 1/Spanish 1/etc at my school is an equivalent of 2 years of language in high school. I’m not sure what is equivalent year of 3 years but I’m guessing 2 semesters of a foreign language is fine.

so what happens if you put the comments section? you don’t have to take any pre-reqs?

I took 3 years of spanish in high school, but would they equal level three spanish they are referring to?

and do you kno the deal with “Complete all Preparation Requirements by the end of Fall 2011…” ? i thought u could finish ur pre-reqs the spring prior to ur transfer…

@asd: My major is Psychobiology (for UCLA), Human Biology (UCSD) or Integrative Biology (UCB) and yes, all 12 pre-reqs are mandatory. 4 Chem classes, 3 Bio Classes, 2 Physics classes, 2 Calc classes and 1 Psych class. Check out assist.org if you would like to see them. Science majors suck :p

oh wow. and they all overlap too? u applying 2011 fall?

and what did u think of this “Complete all Preparation Requirements by the end of Fall 2011…” ? i thought u could finish ur pre-reqs the spring prior to ur transfer…

if they’re not offered at your school then there’s nothing you can do about that. All you can do is try to show that you have a strong interest in philosophy by taking as many classes as possible.

@xviral: Yeah, I completed half of my physics at my CCC and I’ll complete the second half at UCLA. So i’ll finish 11/12 pre-reqs…

@asd: Yes, I already applied for Fall 2011 admission - cannot wait for April!

As far as finishing before you apply I think this is a very rare thing. I believe that 98% of majors are permitted to finish their pre-reqs by spring. Take me for example, I have had to take pre-reqs every single semester that I have been at my CCC and that includes right now (spring). It would be absolutely impossible to complete them before applying.

“Complete all Preparation Requirements by the end of Fall 2011…”(if you applied Fall 2011) for international developments. Why do you think it is not by the end of Spring 2012?

I mean technically you don’t have to finish before you apply, since you apply almost mid of Fall, so you still got time until the END of Fall 2011. But like why isn’t it spring 2012? Is there something wrong?

@TonyPreMed2013
My school does not offer any philosophy pre-reqs that are recommended by UC Berkeley on assist.org. xViral suggested me to put something in the comments section for UC Berkeley application. What do you think TonyPreMed2013? If I do that, I would not have to take any philosophy pre-reqs?

also, I took 3 years of spanish in high school, but would they equal level three spanish they are referring to?

you should note that berkeley has very odd philosophy undergraduate prerequisites for philosophy. At my CC, 3/4 of my classes were prerequisites for UCLA whereas 0-1/4 were prerequisites for berkeley.

you should also note that at UCLA, at least, they have a form which lets you contest classes so you can try to appeal them if you believe that the classes you took were equivalent.

@beyphy
but what would be the need to contest and appeal? UCLA’s philosophy pre-reqs r actually offered at my CC, whereas there are none for Berkeley’s philosophy major.
