UF or FSU?

Also UF is known in some circles as The Harvard of the South. Granted it's not actually Harvard nor is it truly an Ivy-caliber institution, but to earn that clout must mean that it's the best school in Florida and at least one of the best in the Southeast.

Wow! This thread took a really bad turn. STD's!? self esteem!? Where do you kids come up with this stuff? I don't know what kind of nonsense you're being fed in Alachua County, but this is some funny stuff.

You kids will get a rude awakening when you step into the real world. For your own sanity, you better hope that an FSU grad doesn't end up being your boss. How will you handle that kind of injustice?

The median student at UF is superior to the median student at FSU. Of course this does not imply that that all UF students are superior to all FSU students. I’m sure there are plenty of excellent students at FSU who always dreamed of going to FSU and never thought for a minute of going anywhere else. So I’m not degrading FSU students as individuals. I’m just pointing out the differences of one body of students as compared to the other.

Which school one graduated from is really just an indicator of the probable quality of the person, but that’s it. What degree you have and from what school tend to influence which doors are open to you upon graduation. They don't actually gurantee you a job. Once you get in the door the degree really doesn’t matter that much. What you can do and your performance are what are important.

BTW, isn't there an old saying that goes something like "A- and B-students work for C-students."?

It's really funny that I just googled FIU, FSU, UF graduates salaries and the third listing referred me back to this thread. Higher powers seem to be telling us that we are going around in circles.:)

I know a student who was highly recruited by UF (outstanding URM). The whole arrogance thing (during the tour the message was "you'll be lucky to get in" rather than "look at our great school and here's why you'd be happy here" - a subtle but important distinction) completely turned him off, and he is happily planning his freshman year at UCF.

I have a gator son, and he bleeds orange and blue. UF can be very selective because of the number of kids applying. That does NOT equate to being a far better college experience. While my son is still there, I know of lots of students who started with him at UF who have fallen by the wayside and are no longer in college. I found the support for freshmen to be much greater at UCF, and all the kids I know who are going there and their parents (and I'm a HS teacher so I hear a lot of stuff) are extremely happy with the experience.

Congrats to all the Gators. But please don't let the arrogance turn off great potential students.

Thank you for sharing that story about the student UF was recruiting. His reaction to the UF tour and presentation was exactly how my son felt.

Given everyone's remarks and observations, I do think that most freshman will be happy where ever they wind up, as long as a good attitude goes with them. UF, FSU, and UCF are all good choices. My older son is graduating from UCF (UF was his first choice) this year and it wound up being a great place for him. Good luck to everyone whereever you choose to go.

UF is striving for excellence, but there are a lot of forces at work trying to undermine their attempts at raising the bar. Perhaps the greatest of these threats is the disease called mediocrity, which is becoming an epidemic. If you can get into UF, that’s a promising sign. If you can stay in and thrive, now that’s something to be proud of, for you will be competing with many other high-performing students. These are students that have a great work ethic and strive to do excellent work. They deserve praise, but most rarely seek it out. Are they proud of their accomplishments? You bet they are! But to interpret their silence as a sign of arrogance is slanderous and an unfair attack of their character.

Exactly, freshman year of either school is going to weed out the slackers from those that actually give a crap about their education. But using average and median stats is generally a good way to deduce which student body as a whole is better than the other. At the moment it's UF, but perhaps that can change within the next twenty years or so.

UF might be the better school all-around, but I think you'll survive with a degree from FSU or UCF. The UF degree might be more prestigious in certain circles and might open a few more doors depending on the industry you plan to enter, but needless to say you'll get a job/grad school placement out of any of the schools if you have a brain and can sell yourself to employers and other colleges.

It comes down to your program and what you put into it. I was unimpressed with FSU's environmental offerings, while UF seemed to have quite a bit [at least the best I could find in Florida, though it's not as if anywhere was broadcasting it].

I hate UF's arrogance, but I'm going to deal with it and go with great excitement anyway. I know it's cost UF a lot of great students, but it seems as though students are more or less expendable to them anyway. This sounds really negative, but it's no secret that UF is the only school in Florida that doesn't shower you with scholarships and a "WELCOME TO OUR FAMILY!" packet upon acceptance.

Harvard of the South? Isn't that Duke or Vanderbilt or Rice?

Oh, and on that, it is considered a "Public Ivy", and here's the wikipedia link to explain:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Ivy

[Oh, the credibility!]

UF is what it is. Check out this link:

we know UF is a great public school, but that list includes MSU, Colorado, and Penn State....

"Harvard of the South? Isn't that Duke or Vanderbilt or Rice?"

Probably, but I think people are just insinuating that UF is the best school in the state and at least top five in the Southeast.

I've heard that term thrown around a lot though, which means that it's definitely an above-average institution by most measures. Most likely not THE best in the Southeast but it's up there.

Again this is just from an all-around perspective. There are tons of schools in the region that best UF in certain, specific areas.

if your a gator like gator2011 Im gona lay down how much better Fsu is at sports and acedimics. For 15 years strait FSU was in the top 10 in the nation in football. through 1992-2001 the noles played a total of 54 games at doak and didnt lose one but on nov 26 UF came to Doak and apeared to be the dominant team florida was up 31 to 3 in the fourth quarter Florida state then came back 31 to 31 at the end of the game (they didnt have overtime) that is the best fourth quarter comeback in NCAA histoy. we also have more players with retired numbers Warrick Dun, Chris Weinke, Deion Sanders (my favorite) Ron simmon's, and a couple of others, oh yea guess who beat florida in basketball this year FLORIDA STATE!!! we have 2 national titles and been to tons of championship games some of witch we onley lost because of a field goal weve had 2 hiesman trophy winners 37 bowl games and 12 ACC titles! Also fsu's headcoach Bobby Bouden has swapped places with Pennstates headcoach Joe Puterno for the number 1 coach in the nation over and over again and if you think just because your gona go to the national championship your better than us you can forget it weve been so good for so long that (this apply's any other team) we have to have some down years. And if you think were totally stupid we recently had two road scholars finish as the best in the state and Myron Rolle the football teams DB was so smart he went to Aberdock london to finish his college years OH AND DONT THINK IM LYING BUT THE GATORAID THAT YOU THINK YOU MADE FSU MADE AND THEN YOU TOOK IT AND SPONCERD IT I DIDNT KNOW IT MYSELF UNTIL I WATCHED THE 2008 FSU v UF GAME BUT IF YOU STILL DONT BELIVE ME GO TO VENTABOUTSPORTS.BLOGSPOT.COM/2008/12/SEMINOLES-OR-GATORS-WHO-REALLY-INVENTED.html-77K-

IF YOU GO TO UF YUR CRAZY

GATOR2011 I HOPE YOU DONT THINK IM BEING BIASED

oh and gator2011 its a real honor to be the number one drunk school in america

(by the when I said top 10 I meant top 5)
