@Ibad96 - This seems like something’s seriously off with your application. I understand that you have probably called them before but you may want to ask again to see that they have you application and to ask if it is listed under EA. It is unlikely, but possible, that it might have been put in the standard application pile. (I know it’s digital, but you get the gist) Something certainly seems fishy as most people should have gotten their applications by now. Lastly, I doubt UMass has a vendetta against you… lol Anyway, again, best of luck.
Admitted to an alternate major - UNDECLARED
I originally applied to electrical engineering
GPA UW: 3.1
SAT: 2000
Extracurriculars:
Average (?)
Internship at an Asian-American political center (170 hours)
Teacher’s Assistant at a Korean Language School (300+ hours)
Church missionary to Mexico
National Merit Commended Student
- others… amounts to about 700+ hours total
I’m happy that I got into the school in general, but I’m pretty stumped at how I wasn’t admitted to my desired engineering major. What does this mean for me? Do I need to go through freshman year and then fare my chances in declaring a major once again?
Good luck to people still waiting for decision!
@dreambigalways Tough year I guess? Anyway… congratz! You should be able to switch as long as you keep you GPA up at college. (Starting with a steady, but not crazy, load of course would help!)
Finally heard back: accepted via snail mail. Better late than never I guess
heard from 4 schools today: 3 acceptances & 1 defer. Nothing from UMASS yet. I’m genuinely feeling the same way as @Ibad96 . This was my top choice school, I am now having doubts since other schools are now accepting me and offering me money. Congrats on everyone who has got it, but I’m still feeling salty.
Does this happen to anyone else? When I sign onto Spire the “Acknowledgement and Status” section is on top… my eyes ALWAYS grasp the words “We are pleased…” and my heart jumps thinking the next words will be…to offer you blah, blah. Instead, they remain (and have for months) “that you are interested…” You’d think I’d be trained by now. Nope.
Guys, if you haven’t heard by this time, I think it would be worth putting in a call to the university. Last year, one student in my class hadn’t heard back from UMass weeks after many of us had gotten in. The student finally had our guidance counselor call the university regarding the application. It turns out that the university hadn’t bothered to review the application because the student’s SAT scores never actually reached the university, and this actually caused the student to have to reconsider their college plans.
I still haven’t heard either and I don’t think its cuz of my act scores cuz I have a 27 and that’s around the average at umass I think anyway @Violet1996 I’m starting too loose hope too I liked umass tho so I’m disappointed. Hopefully I will get a letter tomorrow
I applied to UMASS Amherst on 10/29 as a Japanese language & literature major. I still haven’t heard back yet, so I called them last week and they said that they sent out the rest of the early applicant decision letters early last week. Hoping I’ll get mine soon. I’m kind of losing hope.
I just called the admissions office & the woman said that they have recieved more applications than any other year. They said that the last batch should HOPEFULLY be out by the end of this week. The attitude I recieved from this women is riduiculous considering the fact that I am a potential candidate who is obviously interested in UMASS. Like I said above, I have many options now, and I’m not getting my hopes up too much for UMASS anymore.
@nyclexyo I don’t know what her “attitude” was like but that explanation sounds reasonable. If they got more apps this year, it might push out the notification dates because I’m sure they didn’t hire additional staff.
That said, my D was only notified a couple weeks back and I can empathize with your anxiety and resentment- I know that it does not feel great to be some of the last to be notified.
I hope you get in and that this delay does not impact your perception of the school.
@lbad96 you too
I agree with @ormdad, but also think the Admissions Department could have posted a notification on Spire about the situation, which could have alleviated unnecessary stress for a lot of applicants.
A friend got his acceptance letter yesterday. I am still waiting. Don’t know what to think
Thanks everyone for their well wishes…I still have yet to hear back. No snail mail or portal change. As I’ve said, I have four fantastic options; Rider, Stetson, Quinnipiac (albeit quite a bit expensive) and (my personal favorite) UNC Wilmington. UMass, U know what to do…
Tired of waiting…But got my 5th acceptance today. Me and @lbad96 are on the same boat. At least we have definite answers from other really great places! I was accepted to Ithaca College & they are giving me some scholarship money. Its definitely one of my top choices right now.
@nyclexyo wow, congrats!! Where else have you been accepted to?
Nyclexyo, Ibad96, a few thoughts for you. It is nice to get acceptances early, and stressful and aggravating to be waiting (obvious part). It is also a standard reality that admission decisions occur over a period of a few months (should be obvious, but hard to grasp when emotional).
It is important to not get bent out of shape if there is waiting involved, because you end up starting to dislike a school which, give or take a month, you might have jumped at. It is not April yet! And all this while this option is still a possibility.
Find some focus, figure out other things you will need to decide anyway (quality of major department for each college you might get into, including this one; order of preference of colleges (what factors drive this? Cost, name recognition, alumni network, “I liked it when I visited” (not to be underestimated, drives motivation, a critical component of doing well), and the list of factors that are meaningful to you, and can differ greatly for different people - make your own).
In short, don’t talk yourself out of a good deal because you are unhappy. Find ways to get through the tough period, get resourceful and find ways to be happy while at it.
Just a few thoughts.
@Nisky1 I appreciate the advice, but I expect to have signed somewhere before April 1. If UMass defers me, they can count themselves out of the race considering they notify deferred applicants all the way in mid-April. I applied on August 1. I’ve waited this long just to hear back for EA, and I’ve got zero intention of waiting potentially a total of eight months just for ONE school.
Did anyone hear anything yesterday?
@Ibad96 I was accepted to washington college, simmons college, ithaca, new patlz(safety) and wheaton(MA). Congrats on all your acceptances. I’m really excited about Ithaca & I have family who attends Cornell which is only minutes away. I’m sure it may seem like @Ibad96 & I are being a little pessimistic about the situation but at the same time it’s fair considering the fact that other schools have extended very exciting offers.
