@johnpfc3 also will you chance me?
@BryantB02 Thanks for the chance. I’m out of state, but I don’t think that should factor into transfer decisions hopefully.
Also, I think your chances are average to be honest. Your ACT score is a bit low, but you are on a scholarship and play varsity sports and have a good GPA in high school and college. I think you have slightly above a 50-50 chance at admission. Best of luck, I really hope you get in.
T-minus 7 weeks
@johnpfc3 yeah, luckily I have strong LOR and I know my ACT is low but from the clas profile last year it’s close to average. I hope my ECs help. Thanks for the honest opinion because most people have told me I have a good or great chance so your evaluation really helps a lot!
@johnpfc3 and I asked about your state because it probably factored into your admissions in high school. To me, it seems as if that’s why you didn’t get in prior to being waitlisted
Hey as organic chemistry it’s a weed out course for most as you well know. But it’s manageable as long you out the time in. It is not a class you can wing it in. I study every day at least one hour. For when test days come closer even more. It’s definitely a step up from the first one and makes general chemistry feel like elementary. As my professor says it’s where the rubber meets the road.
@johnpfc3: you showed impressive evaluation of BryantB02’s stat.
Could you take a look at my stat?
Highschool: GED student ( I came from Vietnam and have just been here for 3 years).
Major: Computer Science.
College GPA: 4.0 / 4.0
Transferable credits: 45 credits taken. (not include 16 credits in 2017-Spring)
New SAT (no writing): 1290/1600 (I took it in 21 January 2017).
Letters of recommendation: 2 letters - one of chemistry professor, one of Honors program director.
Club/Organization: Honors Program, Phi Theta Kappa.
Extra activities: part-time job ( 25 hours/week after school, and 40 hours/week in summer).
I think it should be noted that 90% of the people who actually care enough to get on college confidential and talk about these things are usually cream of the crop. Just some food for thought
@wdp3232 I believe you’re right about that. Also sometimes it’s hard to get a good feel for where you stand because a lot of this stuff differs from year to year. The average GPA is usually the same but the ACT and SAT differ but are almost always lower for transfer students than first year students. If you want see where you stand with recent classes, google “unc class profile.” @ScQuan also, I think you have a good chance. It really depends on your essay and LOR. Your ECs might hurt you a little bit but your GPA and SAT support that because the higher end of the SATs in recent years have been no higher than the 1300s
@BryantB02 After talking to admissions for several hours over the past couple months it seems to me that the application review process is indeed holistic. I don’t think anyone on this board can accurately judge how well you fare in regards to acceptance.
@wdp3232 you’re correct on that as well. As we all know grades and scores are important but at the end of the day it comes down to all the parts of our application. Plus we have no idea how many people applied because that will impact the percentage of those accepted and stuff like that. If you, meaning anyone, has a strong application in every area then I think you should be confident but there’s still no telling which is a blessing and a curse.
@wdp3232 I agree with you. I don’t care for or think that “chancing” on this board will give you any insight on how UNC admissions will feel about a particular applicant. After spending much time over the last two years looking at this board, I feel it is a coin flip to who gets in. What I mean by that is most people on this board have similar stats. The problem with “chancing” is the application review process at universities are so detailed. We don’t have a full perspective on what really goes into UNC’s holistic approach. Over the last few years I have seen people with great stats get waitlisted and or rejected and others with not so great stats (3.3 college GPA or below ) get accepted. The benefit that “chancing” has is it draws people in to this board, if but only to compare apples to oranges. For me I find the interaction with people going through the same application process to be more beneficial than “chancing”.
What some tend to forget about is how your stats compare to other students applying for the same program as you. You may have great stats but there may be tons of applicants with the same or better stats that applied this year. Or your stats may be great for one major and not great for another.
@ScQuan Sure I love chancing people.
Your SATs are slightly above average, however it is not high enough to be considered a shoe-in. You’re probably around the 70th percentile for admitted students in testing which is good. Another thing I like about your stats is your GPA. A 4.0 with 45 credits is really impressive even if it is just in CC. You are also an nontraditional applicant since you’re an immigrant who passed a GED. If you capitalised on that story in your essays I think have a good chance, but even without reading essays and assuming your LORs are generic, I would give you a greater than 60/40 chance at acceptance. Best of luck!
@wdp3232 You are absolutely right. If you look at previous threads for transfers to UNC, you will see almost three-quarters of commentors posting about their acceptance, rather than rejection/waitlist. It can be misleading however college confidential posters are generally more qualified than other applicants, but that guarantees nothing as I’ve learned.
@uncletmein2017 I agree, however sometimes it is beneficial to get a fresh perspective on the brief summary of your application. It helps pass the time and helps the applicants at CC get to know each other better. But you are right in that only UNC can determine the final verdict and a few sentences is often not enough to determine someone’s standing. Good luck!
@johnpfc3 I do think that chancing serves a purpose and passing the time while we wait is big one.
@uncletmein2017 Hopefully the next month and a half breezes by!
If anyone is interested, I found some interesting stats on ECs from last years first year students and transfers
@BryantB02 Where did you find them?
