University Apartments

What are the best complexes? Pros/cons? What Rooms are good, etc.
Or would you recommend non-univ apartments

I heard Westwood Chateau was the best. I lived there and I liked it very much. The bathrooms were new and that was nice.

I would recommend the university apartments for the following reasons

1) You never have to find subletters
2) You never have to split the cable or utilities (YAY FOR FREE AC!)
3) Roomy and cleaner than a lot of non-univ apartments
4) Furniture is provided
5) You dont have to worry about selling your stuff when you leave.

chateau is probably the best since its closer, im at glenrock west and its not bad either, just have to walk a little bit more

i kinda disagree with altema in some parts of the pros,
its true you never have to find subletters but if you do summer session you would have to sublet from someone,
no need to worry about utilities also means you get very basic stuff, internet is very very very very slow (to the point you can play video games over internet without lagging) no high definition for tvs, the router password is set and cannot be changed and same for all rooms (neighbors constantly in our network downloading stuff)
cleaness is really up to you as you go through the year
furniture is provided is a pro and con, sure its convenient but also very bad furniture, all my lamps went out within the first week, the beds are bunked, the mattress is very very stiff (you can feel the metal spring in the middle while laying down)

lastly, think ahead… are you a 3rd year? 2rd year? chances are you won’t be able to get housing for 4th year, so you’ll have to eventually move out to your own apt and get all the stuff… would you want to move in to uni apt for 1 year and move again the next year? or do you just want to move to an apt in your 3rd year and don’t have to worry about housing for 2 years…

Oh, we didn’t have a HDTV so that didn’t matter for me.

As for the internet, I’m very perplexed. My internet was BLAZING fast. The speed was literally 1meg download per second. Though, I reset my router so I changed my password so I had no issue with people logging on our network.

As for the furniture, the ones in Westwood C. were very good imo. The couches were super comfy and the rest was pretty standard (the tables and stuff). We never had lamps go out or stuff like that though. The bed is the standard fare though. It’s like the dorm bed + bunks. I actually liked those beds so that’s probably why I like all the furniture.

Anyone know anything about Margan? I ask because, from the floor plans, it looks like they have the largest single-person studios.

where do you see the floor plans? cant find them on the housing website

[UCLA Housing Room Sign-up](UCLA Housing Room Sign-up)

oh interesting, at GW the modem and router is in the same device, so you have to use it, the password is preset and we can’t change it at all, not even the default logins to the router work, so i constantly see other people’s names in my network and itunes shares… as for downloading i would be happy to see 100kbps with megaupload but generally 50kbps for mu and around 10 for rapidshare… very slow and frustrating… especially when the one they give only have wireless g when i have 2 wireless n routers sitting there but can’t use it…

the beds here isn’t the same as the dorms, the ones in the dorms are way way better than the ones i have here…

I’m currently staying in Westwood Chateau apartments and I agree with Altema because I find them to be great. I’m staying in one room three people and we only had trouble the first day or two with the internet but it was quickly fix since the first week of move in, internet and cable maintenance were on the lower level floor incase anybody had problems. We got a new modem right away and haven’t had problems since. Maybe kick53 had bad luck or it could be the computer. As for the beds, they are ok, none of my roommates have complained. Maybe it depends who has sleep in that bed before. You can also buy certain sheets and an egg-crate that will make it more comfortable. However, I do have to say that our bunk beds are a bit noisy when the person on top moves but nothing out of the ordinary. I brought my pc last quarter and connected the cable to it and my lcd gave a great picture but then I started spending too much time watching TV so I returned it home this quarter.

The apartments are not as social as the dorms since everybody keeps their doors close. With that said, somebody is always throwing a party in my floor on the weekend. Overall, I think it really depends what roommates you get. If you guys get along great, it won’t really matter what type of room you get. You can get the biggest and nicest room but bad roommates will make you hate it. I don’t know about the other university apartments so hopefully somebody can comment on them.

Oh wow, that’s so different. That’s REALLY slow. You could try to reset the router. I think I just did a flat out hard reset of the thing and that wiped everything on it. I could change my information after that.

I’m not 100% but the n routers should not have a significant impact on your speed because the g router max speed far exceeds what internet speeds in America are.

ok couple questions. how quickly do rooms in westwood chateau fill up? right now looking at either a 1 bed/3 person or 2bed/4 person?
also, how do parking spots work? is it 1 parking spot per room? or can you pay for another spot? and also how do you know which rooms are say 1bed/2 person or 1bed/3person?

I don’t know how quickly they fill up but Westwood Chateau has many transfer students so a good amount of units are reserved for them. However, this coming fall they’re making Delta Terrace only for transfer students so I don’t know if that means more room for non-transfers in WC. As for parking, a unit can have more than one parking spot. Booth my roommate and I got parking but I don’t think it’s guaranteed. You can look up the room types by going to the floor plans’ link above. However, some of the rooms that are stated as 1room/2people are actually 1room/3people.

Can’t comment on the W.C fillup, but I’ll clarify on what Zac said.

It seems like Westwood C is given to 4th years (especially transfers) as I applied to dorms for a fourth year and was given Westwood C. In my year, Delta Terrace, Canyon Point and some of Courtside was known as the transfer houses.

As for parking, what zac says is true. My roomie and I both got parking but I declined it as it was tandem and I didn’t want tandem.

yeah the modem is not an easy fix, they blocked the default logins and warned us to not reset at all, definitely not an computer issue when you see your internet slowed down by other people (i used ip track to confirm that other people are logged into our router/modem) but if you have a separate modem and router it shouldn’t be a problem at all… but when i open steam and can’t get a single cs server lower than 100 ping… the internet is slow LOL

but the main point i was trying to make is why not plan 2 years ahead, if you are a 3rd year knowing you’ll have to move again why not just get it over with once and for all and live at the same place for 2 years

Quick question: is it possible to get a university apartment if your sign up time is on the second day? I know they’re really hard to get…

same here goldenslumbers, how hard they are to get the second day? like what if your sign up time is in the morning?

I got the second time on the first day and even I’m a little worried.

we had 10 am on the first day and we only had Glenrock west and westwood palms to pick from… (2 room 4ppl)

does anyone have any comments about westwood palm? I don’t hear people talking about it much. I heard it’s pretty close to the dorms, but how are the living conditions and social life there? Thanks for any related responses!

Tham…that really sucks. I have 11am on the first day and was hoping to get a studio/one person. I guess it’s not going to happen. Does anybody know if I have a chance?
