University of Michigan Deferral Thread EA 2020

Well “GO GREEN” it is! I think it’s a much wiser school anyway, my son was accepted by them back in October 2015. U-M, you missed out on a great kid!

I appreciate that and am grateful for my son’s fantastic options. UM was not a lifelong dream for him so it really is not a huge deal for him – but it is for other kids. If they announced all decisions on 3/31 (like the Ivies) that would be fine. My beef is with not rejecting kids they know full well they will not be accepting. I do hiring for my company. I get 200 resumes for 2 positions. I can eliminate the bottom 100 very easily. There is no need to wait until 3/31 (5 or 6 months for some kids) to tell the kids who have no chance that in fact, they have no chance. My son got waitlisted. He was obviously a bubble candidate and that would not be known until the end. Again, I don’t think it is personal, but if anyone from the Admissions Office reads this, they could consider changing their process so that as acceptances trickle out on Fridays, they also send out rejections so that kids can move on. I don’t see the harm in that or making suggestions for how to improve the process.

Accepted after EA deferral!

Rejected!

Accepted after EA deferral! Almost give up hope

For those still waiting like my S, this was posed on U-M Admissions FB page today… .hoping it means everyone will have their decisions by the 6th.

Our final live ‪#‎UMchat‬ on twitter for admitted ‪#‎Victors2020‬ students will be this Wednesday, April 6! Get all your University of Michigan questions ready…

It is interesting to hear that every year. People are actually complaining about the rolling admission announcement that they noticed most students earlier than the end of March. Many said they would rather to have a fixed date for admission notice. If that is the case, they just need to hold on all announcement until today.

Rejected! FML Michigan was sort of a reach school but it sucks to have that dream snatched away :frowning:

Waitlisted. 36 ACT. Prez of 3 clubs. 800 SAT M2. Top choice. CoE. Everything sucks.

@FrustratedMom They actually didn’t drag out the process. They always said that decisions would be admitted by the end of March. And they were. You could argue the same for the Ivies: they had made all their decisions a while go but waited until yesterday to announce them. As for Michigan being “overpriced”, it is no more expensive that most other universities, and financial aid is good. Sorry you are disappointed but you child has great options.

@nbsquared In truth, Michigan did that. They accepted the strongest candidates early on. Others were deferred until later in the season. Many universities do the same thing. 31 March is the official “common notification date” of the College Board.

Waitlisted.

What does this mean for people who STILL haven’t heard

You are still not understanding what I am saying. I will not be disappointed if he does not get in. I will be disappointed if he does. He apparently has not checked yet. So I really am not sure how invested he is either. This is another reason I do not feel is is the right fit.

Exactly how I feel. To me it is obvious my son will not be accepted. Why the craziness. I still do not know. I am actually hoping for a rejection.

I completely agree with you, nbsquared. I do not think my son is going to get accepted. He hasn’t checked. It seems to me part of the infatuation with Michigan is how many kids apply and how few are accepted. It’s become a status thing where I live. I assume it is a good school and wish the best for those who attend. My sons 32 act , no community service and only 1 sport, no extra curriculars and little time spent on the essays will most likely not get him accepted. I do feel if he was, he would do well there. He is a hard worker and loves engineering. 35 act math. His gpa is 3.8 weighted and he has never had an A in English or Social studies in hs. Of course, he took all honors and A P classes so Bs are fine, but probably not Michigan standards, I care more about what he is learning than the grade. Many kids in my area are rejected with better credentials. I told him when he applied that I did not think he would be accepted and was really annoyed with the deferred status. I cannot imagine that he will get 25 thousand in scholarships if he is accepted. That is what it would take to meet the other offers he has gotten. he has not applied to the ivies. Even to him it is obvious he would not get accepted. Really, Michigan should get its act together and put more effort into screening out candidates early on. Accepted and no money could have been dealt with easier early on. At any rate hope he is rejected not wait listed and this craziness is over. I suppose accepted with money would be even better, but we shall see. I think I am better at knowing what Michigan wants for acceptance than they are since I hear all the accepts and not accepts for years. Hey, maybe they should hire me. (I am being sarcastic)

Still no decision…

I’d be totally fine if Michigan released all their decisions at the same time. What I’m not really fine with is sending out mostly acceptances early and slowly crushing kids’ hopes until they finally get their denial/waitlist three months after people got accepted. I understand it’s rolling admissions so it’d be really hard to do that, but I feel that it’s a bit cruel not to try. UMichigan truly was my first choice and I can firmly say I have better credentials than many of the others at my school that got in, and it’s crushing seeing them get excited for housing while I didn’t even get my decision until yesterday.

Son just heard rejected. I knew this from October at the early admission application filing. Now we are hoping he is not too late to get a space in the engineering dorm. Deposit submitted. This process was ridiculous.

When do we think the rest of the decisions will come out? The wait is really starting to get to me.
