University of Michigan Waitlist 2024

???

fax lol gluck guys

So MANY of my friends just withdrew their application in their U-M portal and I think that’s what I’m going to do too. There’s clearly no point in staying on the waitlist because we all know that there’s ZERO chance for us to get accepted.
There hasn’t been much acceptances since that 4/23 wave. U-M is just keeping people on the waitlist so that if a large percentage of their students drop out, they have a backup plan.
I’m sure you guys have paid your deposit to a great school and I truly believe that you guys will be successful no matter what. I recommend withdrawing your application so that this painful wait can be over. There’s no need to wait till the end of August and receive that final rejection letter from U-M.
Even though this result is not what we are hoping for, just understand that you guys are all great students and are capable of succeeding at any institutions.

Finally, I wish to share with you guys some lines from a post I saw:

“if you are a high school senior (or parent) who receives a thin envelop from a dream school this spring and are “bewildered at an admission decision,” take heed. For: “life is full of ups and downs, successes and failures.” And, if you do what you do out of “sheer love and enjoyment,” and treat others accordingly, you will have already succeeded in life beyond any institution’s measure.”

All in all, it’s been a nice ride and I sincerely wish all of you best of luck.

hope y’all were applying for coe loll

i mean i paid to send my application. id like to see a result  don’t think i’ll withdraw

I think it’s all about having heart. You either have it or you don’t. I don’t mind holding out. It’s low risk at this point. Either I’ll get in or I won’t. I see no reason to close off the possibility just so I don’t feel upset in a month. But I do think if UMich accepts anyone off the waitlist, they should give no more than 3 days to decide. That would be my humble recommendation. ?

Also, @Maduka I would think that the CoE would have lots of international students with pending visas and travel bans. I had heard that international students could not be 100% online. If true, then the school will possibly still offer spots. If not true, then many will go fully online. Does anyone know the law about international students? Has it been waived for Covid?

Also, people are still opting for a gap year as Covid continues to rage upwards. I think UMich has been offering spots. Just not being posted here

@Caligorilla true until DHS approves international students can’t take full online plus freshman international must enter the US to activate the visa. Again depends on how DHS approves.

@airway1 thanks. So there is hope. May be why waitlists remain open at so many schools. If these guys can’t do full online or get here, they will have to defer. Schools will then have to decide if they want to take more from the waitlist. But can these students go part time online to keep their spots?

o really? i didn’t know that

from what i saw on reddit, i thought international students need to take at least 9 in person credits or something in the fall.

anyway, good luck y’all ?

@Caligorilla hope that’s the case loll

@maduka undergrad international students must take 12 credits to be considered full time and must have the majority of classes in class (I think only one online class). As my kid is an international student I can tell you his sponsors have told him as of right now he must be registered for in-class. Also, a lot of international went back home and some nations are not allowing their citizens to exit yet.

Lots of complexity to deal with for universities that’s why they have to keep their waitlist open. This is a special year for student son the waitlist

But if international students are forced to defer, will Michigan go to the waitlist to replace those students this year? You would think that they would want to recover the tuition revenue. However, I’m concerned that some universities may not go to the waitlist because they don’t want their admission rate to get too high because that would affect their ranking. This would be cynical, but universities seem to all be very concerned about their standing relative to one another. For example, UCSD closed its waitlist, seemlingly before any resolution concerning international student has been reached and that school has 20% international students.

i think because of COVID, the rankings aren’t gonna be the concern of most universities

I hope the rankings are suspended for the next year by U.S. News or that colleges don’t participate. But it’s potentially a prisoner’s dilemma among colleges. If there are seats open, the right and ethical thing to do would be to go to the waitlist and accept the deserving students who have hung in there so long and really want to attend.!

What about in-state students? If michigan is worrying about international students, wouldnt it most likely takes students from oos? Also i heard michigan needs to keep about 50:50 Instate and oos ratio. Why is michigan still holding in-state students in waitlist?

If the vast majority of courses end up being virtual, it may be tough to get OOS students to commit to the high out of state tuition at this point.

But its been almost 2-3weeks since the release of schedule. I think many already have made their decisions. also if oos students are going to drop, they will replace with oos students from waitlist. Not in-state.

US still has travel ban for Europe and China. Students from those countries are not allowed to enter US

@sam2341 I don’t think they are just taking oos or just full pay. They will likely keep the ratio. I think acceptances are happening, just not for us. I know that some people are still considering taking a gap year, some international students are unable to get a visa appointment until winter but still may be subject to a ban. So they are the real wild cards. Schools may just decide to wait it out for the international students. But some people are being offered spots now. May be reluctant to post about it. But it is happening
