University of Rochester vs Penn State University

Hi guys I got accepted to University of Rochester and Penn state. Which one do u think I should go .

When do you apply to PSU that you heard back so early? Thanks and congrats!

Had to check your posting history to get context.
Business major? Spring transfer?

Which is more affordable?
Do you prefer a large public or a mid-sized private?
Rural college town or outskirts of a city?
Any EC’s important to you that are better at one vs. the other?

With threads like this, it’s best to supply your pros and cons thus far, so that people have a starting point in assessing what you care about and where you’re finding fit.

These are totally different schools in some ways. Do you prefer a city (Rochester) or rural (Penn St). Do you want football (Penn St) or don’t care much about sports (Rochester - they have them, but not large scale)?

Both have research, but Rochester is more skewed to it (most undergrad students are involved).

If travel is an issue, Rochester has an airport that takes about 15 minutes to get to. Penn St is over an hour away from Harrisburg’s airport.

If Pre-med, Rochester has its med school and hospital right next door. Penn State’s is about an hour away (though Pre-meds can get their experience anywhere - doesn’t have to be during the school year and certainly doesn’t have to be right next door).

Certain majors are better at each school.

Does cost come into play?

I got accepted to Economics major ( Both). However I’m more looking for the reputation. Which one do u think is better?

I also applied NYU spring transfer 2022 ( Econ). I have 2 business internship, one United Nations business economics program, One online wealth management by DBS Singapore. Besides I have one research on Funds and finance ( it was about research on how to prevent elderly from Financial fraud). I also have extra activities: leadership club, business club, Animal rescue, Economic forum.

However, i transfer from a Private community college in Boston. Do u think I have chance to get in NYU as a transfer?

Thankyou! I applied on 15 Oct. I heard it back 2 days ago.

This link below leads to a somewhat older analysis based on standardized scoring. At the time it was created, the student profile of URochester placed it much higher than Penn State.

Congrats!

Rochester wins for Economics.

Did you apply EA or rolling to PSU?

Rochester is higher ranked. Both schools are opposite in many ways including size, location, sports, research, reputation. You should visit both if you can.

Thankyou so much for letting me know

I’m waiting for NYU decision! If NYU accept me then I will go NYU for sure:)

Rochester is a tremendous school on a beautiful (if chilly) campus whose reputation suffers somewhat due to its name (confusion with a SUNY) and location. The most similar analogs in terms of size and academic approach are Emory, Chicago, Wash U, and Johns Hopkins, all of which have much stronger reputations. I believe there are a slightly higher-than-typical number of international students, for what that’s worth. It also has a huge endowment and the facilities reflect this. But I’m all about fit; you’d have a very different experience than at Penn State.

It’s also not what I’d call a “city” school; it is surrounded on three sides by a river and one by a cemetery. It’s in the suburbs.

I know less about Penn State. I think you have to be enthusiastic about going to a gigantic school on a gigantic campus with a gigantic student body to be happy there.

Second what RayManta said about URoch’s reputation confusion. As an initial matter, make NO mistake: U Rochester is way, way, way better in quality than Penn State, to the point that these two shouldn’t even be compared unless finances are a major issue. U Rochester offers courses and research on par with the highest caliber institutions, and there is a true intellectual vibe on campus that Penn State could never hope to match. It also enjoys a collaboration with the prestigious Eastman School of a Music and boasts its own hospital and very close ties with optics firms, among other research partners. As for the reputation, U Rochester does take a massive hit because it’s often confused with the very mediocre Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) — a false association it’s never been able to shake because of the similarity in name. It’s also located in Rochester, which is associated with very bad weather, poverty, and crime (all accurate, unfortunately). U Roch also doesn’t seem to do much to pump up its considerable assets in the public eye, for some reason.

Or if someone were looking for Ag majors or certain types of Engineering.

Thankyou all for the advices! It helps!

I just received UIUC offer today, so I will commit to UIUC first, but if NYU accept me I will go NYU!

So you’re really choosing between two schools you didn’t even ask about?

Odd…

Are you a spring transfer?

I chose UIUC and NYU bc their ranking is higher. When I create this forum I didn’t know I got accepted to UIUC. I only have Univeristy of Rochester and Penn state university offer, but these two school anit my first choice.
