@LCP9876 any hooks? So very sorry.
I was deferred OOS with 33 (34 with highest subsections) ACT and 4.0 UW GPA. I fell so completely in love with the school when I visited so I’ve taken this the hardest out of any of my deferrals.
@Cowenite I don’t, sorry! I haven’t used the myUVA portal at all
Deferred in-state, 32(33 SS) ACT, 3.75 UW/4.1 W GPA.
EC’s: Varisty Crew, NHS/NAHS/NSHS, lots of hours volunteering (D.R. mission trips, tutoring elementary schoolers with NHS)
It hurts, yeah. I definitely thought I had a chance in-state but I guess I am going to have to face another round. My school in NOVA is pretty competitive with UVA so it was always an up-hill battle against some really smart classmates, I guess, we admit ~40 every year. Now that I’m in the RD pool I wish I had the chance to beef up my app and redo my personal essays, which weren’t my best, but I’m hoping my GPA was my only real weak point. Was just deferred from UMich in December as well. Good luck to all the others who just got deferred!
Thanks to everyone that helped me figure out SIS haha unfortunately I was deferred
Daughter was accepted. OOS, 1540 OLD SAT (which calibrates higher I think…to like a 1560?), currently ranked 1st hoping to keep the rank, she most likely will. Lots of great EC’s and very meaningful service.
Deferred OOS Legacy
ACT: 33/34 Superscore

I know UVA is über-competitive and what not, but this really bites. Virginia has always been my dream school. Got to watch them in the NCAA Elite Eight last year, loved the campus, Dad went there, and my grandparents live pretty close so they are always telling me about how great it is. At least I have a chance, but I’d much rather go to Villanova or Fordham where I’ve already gotten in and know I’m not just a second thought by the admissions office. Anyone know the average amount of deferrals that end up getting accepted?
Congratulations to all who were accepted, and condolences to all those who were not. I’ll still be cheering on the wahoos, but maybe not as enthusiastically. Fuck you, Jefferson
@hcmom65 I guess not. I just don’t get it. It’s really tough to take.
I am really surprised with the decision:
Deferred - Legacy OOS
ACT: 34
GPA: 4.1 weighted
Very strong essays
First Chair orchestra
High school band
Varsity Tennis
Not sure what UVA is looking for…
I am surprised by all the OOS legacy deferrals, as the OOS admit rate is higher, and these stats seem more than good enough!
“I am surprised by all the OOS legacy deferrals”
UVA seems to really hone in on the HS transcript more than the test scores fwiw. But transcript strength is harder to compare since high school GPA systems vary all over the lot.
Also, as noted up thread, some posters have indicated that in recent years the OOS legacy boost seems to be somewhat less than advertised (i.e. OOS legacies get treated like IS for admissions). Looks like that may be the case.
Deferred. OOS. 1540 new Sat, 2230 old, 3.8 GPA. Oh well that’s two for two. Deferred at Harvard and now Virginia. Still hoping and waiting I guess. Congrats to the accepted and my condolences to those rejected.
@northwesty yes, that’s my thought. Last year my OOS legacy daughter had a resume that probably would have gotten her in if she was in state. She was initially deferred and then rejected at the RD stage. Based on results of unhooked OOS students, I think she would have been rejected outright without a legacy bump. Feels like being a legacy is not much more than a tie breaker at this point.
It could be that UVA is deferring more OOS legacies simply to dull the pain of rejection on alumni parents somewhat. Haha
What are the results of applicants with one blemish (say a C in an advanced AP or honors class) on an otherwise strong resume? Meaning, 32-34 ACT, all As and maybe a couple Bs but one C in a class load with 12 APs, etc. A C is “not ideal” obviously but I’m wondering if there are any data points out there in this year’s cycle.
“Deferred. OOS. 1540 new Sat, 2230 old, 3.8 GPA. Oh well that’s two for two. Deferred at Harvard and now Virginia.”
Hang in there Snicks.
As we were discussing earlier today, UVA IS is tough. Legacy/hooked OOS is also tough.
But unhooked OOS at UVA is really tough. As your results indicate, like Ivy tough!
On the topic of legacy deferrals…I don’t know about UVA, but some schools count the legacy more during RD (although that doesn’t explain those legacies that were deferred then rejected RD). I think Villanova is an example of a school that takes legacy into consideration during RD and not EA. Some schools are the opposite. It’s really hard to make sense of all of this sometimes.
Honestly so grateful to be accepted:
OOS
34 ACT
4.0 GPA, 15 AP Classes
@collegemomjam a 1540 on the old SAT is horrible…you mean on the new SAT??
@DevilStick I can be your data point. My scores, ec’s, lor’s, and essays were (presumably) good. But my uw gpa is only 3.75 cause of a bad junior year (lots of B’s and 2 C’s).
I got deferred OOS. Do you think it would help, in my case, if I gave a mid-year report of all A’s (so far I have all A’s)?
@JuicyMango…sorry, I didn’t put writing in there…she had a 2270 on the OLD…just to keep it more apples to apples we usually just report the 1600 scale version! Thanks for pointing that out!
And if you have all A’s on your midyear, can’t imagine that won’t help your application.
@JuicyMango One of the major reasons UVA defers EA candidates is to see your mid year senior grades. For example, cases where an applicant hit a bump in the road in their junior year grade wise and UVA wants to see if the applicant bounces back. A strong mid year senior report could be enough to push you into the accepted category. So, dig deep!
My daughter OOS got in!
ACT 35 composite
NMSF
No. 1 in class at highly competitive high school
Captain of Tennis team and All District 4 years
Vice President of Student Council
AP Honor student
Weak on community service (but what she did was meaningful)
Girls State
Nominee for Jefferson – waiting on outcome of interview
Good luck and best wishes to everyone.
