University of Virginia Class of 2021 EA Discussion Thread

I got in EA and boy am I shocked.

A basic rundown on my stats:

1490 SAT (770 M | 720 R)
770 US History SAT
800 World History SAT
4.30 Weighted GPA
Rank: 38/318

Applied to the college of arts and sciences.

My essays were kind of half-assed last minute if I’m gonna be honest with you guys. I wrote about my favorite word being confidence and wrote about how F.A. Hayek’s “The Road to Serfdom” changed my view on fiscal policy.

Subjective stuff: President of NHS & President of Model UN. Varsity football & Varsity wrestling (went to regionals for wrestling).

I am an in-state Indian male from Northern Virginia.

To all those underclassmen who aren’t in the top 10%:
The bullshit they tell you about being top 10% isn’t true. Work as hard as you can, but have good EC’s too. UVA has a holistic approach, don’t give up just yet.

My son was accepted OOS
old SAT: 2310, new SAT: 1530
top 5%? in 400 students (not sure, could be higher)
NMSF
DECA: 1st state; final 10 international conf
other ECs

GLTA!

Our applicant has 35 on a one-and-done ACT, a 4.0 weighted GPA with lots of APs, a 4.5 gpa for junior year and while not
a long list of ECs, two very significant long-term community service commitments. A varsity athlete until sidelined by an injury. We live in NoVa.

An outright rejection. We are at a loss. Any opnions on what went wrong?

Rejected. Thought I’d at least get deferred but I guess this saves me the anxiety of waiting. Congrats to everyone who got in!

Deferred. Seem like they accepted a lot for EA and my deferral doesn’t give me much hope to get in regular  not enough space

@collegemomjam it was the october 2016 sat 1500/1600

ACCEPTED - OOS legacy
36, 4.8
10 APs
Top 1% of class
ECs - followed passion and won many awards in that area.

My D was deferred OOS (MA) - 1400 SAT/ 30 ACT, 3.9U/4.3W - the competition is so fierce in the top 5%, she feels like she busted her hump with not a lot of reward… got in to UMass Amherst our flagship but no honors college invite - need to stay hopeful! Congrats to those who got in 1st round! Shocked to see a lot of people deferred/rejected with higher stats.

Accepted OOS for Biomedical Engineering

ACT:35 new SAT:1540 old sat:2270
rank: 14/1066
gpa: 6.19/6 weighted, 4.14/4 unweighted
9 APs
Solid ECs(guitarist in jazz band, NHS president, varsity soccer, soccer coach, and others)

I applied to 12 schools and UVA isn’t too high on my list, but it’s nice to get my first acceptance.

@JuicyMango I just saw your comment. No I didn’t really have any hooks, unless you maybe consider a female interested in STEM as a hook. After a rejection from Vanderbilt and a deferral from Tulane, I honestly believe the process of accepting students gets slightly “random” when you are dealing with such competitive schools. Good luck!

Deferred. 33 ACT, 4.5-4.6W GPA.

First deferral among some acceptances. No matter. We’ll bounce back. UNC, I’m hoping for good news!

Congratulations to all accepted and good luck to all those in my position!

I got accepted today OOS!! Beyond excited as this was definitely a bit of a reach (32 act 3.9 GPA). Congrats to everyone who got in!!

Deferred. 29 ACT, 3.0 GPA

@lucky0318 Yup, I definitely agree that this process is random.

Congrats on getting in!

My S was accepted OOS! 2210 on old SAT. All 5’s on AP’s. His essays portray who he is: A modern Huckleberry Finn who builds pirouges and ventures out in the swamps of Louisiana (against my advice).

I bet his essays are incredible (and memorable to admissions staff) – how interesting!

Can deferred applicants revise our essays for the regular round? Or just send in mid-year reports?

DEFERRED OOS.

Was expecting a acceptance/rejection. Why UVA whyyyyyyyyyyyy

Deferred OOS
ACT: 23
Essays: Legendary
Other Decisions: University of Oklahoma (accepted), WashU (rejected), Uchicago (rejected)

Is there a groupme for accepted students yet and if so can someone share the link
