My essays were kind of half-assed last minute if I’m gonna be honest with you guys. I wrote about my favorite word being confidence and wrote about how F.A. Hayek’s “The Road to Serfdom” changed my view on fiscal policy.
Subjective stuff: President of NHS & President of Model UN. Varsity football & Varsity wrestling (went to regionals for wrestling).
I am an in-state Indian male from Northern Virginia.
To all those underclassmen who aren’t in the top 10%:
The bullshit they tell you about being top 10% isn’t true. Work as hard as you can, but have good EC’s too. UVA has a holistic approach, don’t give up just yet.
My son was accepted OOS
old SAT: 2310, new SAT: 1530

Our applicant has 35 on a one-and-done ACT, a 4.0 weighted GPA with lots of APs, a 4.5 gpa for junior year and while not
a long list of ECs, two very significant long-term community service commitments. A varsity athlete until sidelined by an injury. We live in NoVa.
An outright rejection. We are at a loss. Any opnions on what went wrong?
My D was deferred OOS (MA) - 1400 SAT/ 30 ACT, 3.9U/4.3W - the competition is so fierce in the top 5%, she feels like she busted her hump with not a lot of reward… got in to UMass Amherst our flagship but no honors college invite - need to stay hopeful! Congrats to those who got in 1st round! Shocked to see a lot of people deferred/rejected with higher stats.
@JuicyMango I just saw your comment. No I didn’t really have any hooks, unless you maybe consider a female interested in STEM as a hook. After a rejection from Vanderbilt and a deferral from Tulane, I honestly believe the process of accepting students gets slightly “random” when you are dealing with such competitive schools. Good luck!
My S was accepted OOS! 2210 on old SAT. All 5’s on AP’s. His essays portray who he is: A modern Huckleberry Finn who builds pirouges and ventures out in the swamps of Louisiana (against my advice).
