OK essays: not a fantastic writer honestly.
Strong EC:
Started and organized a pretty big local community service. Had the local government apartment leader write an recommendation for me. She knows my project really well.
Other services.
Learning art for around 13 years. Part-time artist with a personal website (fun fact: I missed the art portfolio deadline)
Self-designed biomedical research
I used to be an exchange student from China. I came to US and became the first one to transfer in the program.
Admission Ambassador, NHS student leader, school newspaper staff artist, school magazine art editor etc.
What else: I was deferred last December from Harvard and wasn’t happy about it. The UVA decision came really suddenly today and really cheered me up.

Extra Curricular:
Have led and co-led(since 8th grade) a diversity awareness organization that holds bi-monthly meetings for discussions regarding social identifiers in today’s society. Monthly attendance is around 120-150. We hold annual conference with attendance at around 650-700.
I am a freelance photographer and editor. I started learning in 5th grade and have evolved into a paid photographer. Biggest milestone is being hired for a wedding at age 17.
I have been an active and competitive spoken word poet since 9th grade. I participate in recitals and do performances in different Poetry clubs around the city. Was reached out to by manager of world-renowned poetry club to open for a major event.
Co-founder of school film club. Major milestone is creating the school video that advertises to prospective students both in assemblies and on our website.
Founder of Advanced Calculus club this year. Purpose is to tackle higher level math classes not offered in class with other willing students through peer tutoring and group study.
I am the “grade representative” and have been since 9th grade for
my Model UN club and regularly oversee preparation for the conferences.
Work:
Tutor: I have worked as a tutor since sophomore year teaching any level of math including SAT math. I also help people write essays as I am regarded by my grade as the strongest writer in the school. I work year-round.
Photographer: I have worked as a paid photographer since sophomore year. These photo shoots range from single person shoots to groups, events, and weddings. I work year-round.
Retail Sales Associate: Busy work during summers to make up for a lull in tutoring business.
Supermarket clerk: More busy work year-round in case I don’t make enough from the other jobs above.
(All of the above except retail associate are under the table jobs)
Extenuating Circumstances:
There are 5 people in my one bedroom home. All of them are too young, too old, or too unstable to work. I have been the bread maker in my home since freshman year. We officially make 0 dollars according to our taxes. I work 7 days a week doing anything to make money. I get home late in the evening or at night and proceed to clean or cook for the next day’s meal. My mother is too sick and too mentally unstable from alcohol and prescription pill abuse. My sister deals with her own issues as well. My niece is too young and my grandma is too old and sick. She recently battled with cancer and when she had the tumor extracted, I was the one to swab and clean the open gash it left in her head as she recovered. I try my best to manage school and work but a lot of times, I am unable to get all my hw done which is why my GPA is so low. My sister and her baby daddy often engage in violent arguments and I’m the one who has to mediate and shield my niece from watching them fight. I have battled with Housing Courts to not be evicted from our home when the money doesn’t reach to pay bills and we actually became homeless last year, though I was able to eventually fight us back into our home.
More unique things:
-I have created and led various demonstrations and protests in NYC in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Our largest protest was 150 strong and was actually televised.
-my college essay brought my guidance counselor to tears
-my supplements were referred to by English teacher as some of the strongest writing she had ever seen from a high schooler
Personal Qualities:
Bold, outspoken as hell, natural leader, public speaker, very articulate
Ethnicity: Hispanic (Afro-Latino)
First generation
Has anyone gotten the mailed letter of admission? I’m wondering when we should expect it and if there is any additional info included with it Congrats everyone!!
You will never know why your son was rejected as the process is holistic. What was his unweighted GPA? A weighted 4.0 with lots of APs is not that high for highly competitive Unis. Also, if you are from Nova, you are in a very high achieving area with lots of UVA applicants, which does not help either.
hey guys, to anyone that got into UVA early, there is a class of 21 facebook page. the link is on dean j’s blog, she posted a new blog regarding acceptances, defer, and rejections! congrats to all who got in
@GeorgeX I hope you know that your many accomplishments and proven maturity has earned you admission to yourr pick of schools. Congrats and I wish we knew your real name because I am sure we will all know it soon enough with the amazing accomplishments in your future.
@GeorgeX keep leading and standing up for what you believe in! Your post actually inspired me. You are a gifted leader and can maybe be one of the true change-makers this world needs. We need people like you now more than ever. I marched on Saturday (my first time ever, and I’m 50). I wish I’d gotten involved at a younger age.
Wherever you end up, I know that you will use your amazing education in a peaceful and productive way to bring about social justice.
Good luck to you…I also wish we knew your name because you are going to make a difference…
Deferred, OOS 30 ACT, rank: 9/590, tons of AP courses, nice EC (a lot of sports), very good recommendations, some leadership, excellent essay. My daughter’s best friend was deferred as well, lower class rank but has perfect ACT score.
@GeorgeX Your post brought me to tears. Congratulations on your well earned admission to a wonderful university. Godspeed and heartfelt best wishes to you.
For anyone who doubts that UVA is a public Ivy, check out the EA stats posted on Dean J’s blog this morning.
The middle 50% ACT range for all EA accepted students was 31-34. For reference, that’s just a smidge below Yale and Princeton (31-35) and Harvard (32-35).
And then think how tougher those numbers would get for the kids coming in unhooked OOS. That is very much an Ivy level playing field. UVA just doesn’t have the crazy low admit rates because it doesn’t use binding ED and SCEA to manipulate the numbers down.
In fact, since the SCEA policies at HYPS have an exception for early apps to public schools, it seems that the UVA EA pool has lots and lots of kids who are SCEA applicants to HYPS.
So congrats to all who got in or were even deferred. And kudos to those who got denied too – admissions at UVA is a much sportier game than its more reasonable admit rates suggest.
@northwesty your enthusiasm for UVA is contagious! I only wish that the Ivies had a 22% acceptance rate like UVA’s OOS acceptance rate…then our kiddos would have even more choices. Tough for sure, but comparable no. But as everyone on these posts know there is a significant element of chance determining where a student is admitted among comparable schools so the stats only tell so much.
I was accepted into UVA yesterday and I’m not sure if I will attend at this time. Do I have to select undecided in SIS orr do I just not respond to the question?
it’s saying “Select either the Accept or Decline button to indicate your choice. You will then be asked to confirm your decision. Select the Undecided button if you do not wish to make a selection at this time.” But what happens if I say undecided- just want to make sure before I click anything…
