Unofficial UNC Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

Hey guys! UNC is my top choice for transfer, so I’m kind of going nuts about it lol.

Currently a freshman at Rutgers University. I NEVER wanted to stay in state for college, but due to a couple of personal struggles, my parents would not allow me to leave the state until I worked through some things. So, after a lot of hard work, I’m finally applying to transfer! Just got accepted into The Ohio State University so I’m definitely leaving Rutgers!! Super excited about it, lol.

I am an OOS student obviously, from New Jersey.
Parents divorced, living with Mom with an avg. salary of about 60k per year.
College GPA: 4.0 first semester, will likely attain a 3.8-4.0 second semester. The thing is, I did not take rigorous courses at all. I did not take a science or math, I only took course in English and Women’s Studies (my major and minor, respectively). I also took some cultural courses such as Middle Eastern Studies and Italian Culture. I think this is really going to hurt me.
HS: (Northeast, top ranked public school) GPA: Probably around 3.5 or 3.6. Took 7 honors, 2 APs.
AP Exams: 4 on AP Literature and Comp. and 5 on Psychology.
SAT: 2060. 710 Writing, 680 Math, 640 Writing.

Current courses: Creative Writing: Poetry, Principles of Literary Studies: Prose, Gender and Consumption, Topics in Women’s and Gender Studies: Race and Sex in America, Introduction to Poetry. All 200-300 level courses.

Recs: from my first semester creative writing professor. He was very passionate about me as a student, definitely a solid recommendation with regard to my talent as a writer.

Essays: explained thoroughly why Rutgers University was not the right fit for me, how I discovered my passion for an English Major. Clearly communicated that UNC is my “dream school.” I used the “Additional Information” section on common app to explain why I performed poorly during my sophomore and freshman years of high school. I went from a 3.3/3.0 to a 3.9/4.1 my Junior and Senior years. Further explained that UNC was my dream school in this section. Talked about major current event issues for the supplemental essay question referring to what bothers me about the world today. Heavy emphasis on intersectional feminism and why it is important to me. I would give my essays an 8.5/10.

ECs:
– Two Clubs: Rutger University Campus Coalition Against Trafficking, and She’s The First (a club that fundraises for educational opportunities for women in underdeveloped countries. There are chapters at most colleges/universities)
–Internship with New Jersey Private Interest Research Group. I was Coalition Coordinator for the Hunger and Homeless Campaign in New Brunswick.
– Writer for Affinity Magazine. Online magazine that deals with sociopolitical issues and produces editorial pieces that highlight feminist theory.
–Won a National Award for poetry
– High School: Red Cross Club, Literary Magazine editor.

Work: typical summer jobs. I was a cashier/phone order taker at a pizzeria for two years.

So nervous. Don’t think I have a great shot since my courses weren’t rigorous and I goofed up my freshman and sophomore years of HS. Hoping that my SAT scores, essay, and College GPA pull me through. Best of luck to everyone!!

and does anyone know if all admissions are released on the same day? or is it kind of like rolling, where not everyone receives a response at the same time?

oh I just checked! OOS has no impact on transfers admissions thank god lol

Forms proving/claiming NC residency are due on March 25th. Going by this timeline, I’m assuming admissions will begin reviewing the fat stack of transfer applications beginning on the 28th. Given the close to 50% transfer rate, this should be easy for them. I expect decisions to be released on 1st week of April. Last year’s transfer admissions received decisiosn on the 1st & 2nd week of April.

My two cents.

I say the 9th or 11th,12th. Most likely 11th or 12th.

Lets just hope they see the upward trend in mine. Cause my Cummualtive is garbage but the last 2 years 3.53 and it wasn’t cakewalk classes. Gen bio I, gen chem 1&2, A&P 1&2, stats. Just a few of classes. But if they hold true to their statement of not looking at a single number I have a shot. My EC’s are fantastic, letters are solid, and my essays very solid.

What do yall think???

I made the honors society and was extremely involved in school.

@ltfezha Are the forms claiming NC residency something we also have to fill out? If so where do we find them?

@furturetarheel If it isn’t in your To-Do List online, then chances are you shouldn’t worry about it. I had to fill one out, but I fall under a different circumstance (independent student & veteran).

@jtut2006 You’re most likely gettin’ in.

@Itfezha haha what do you think about a 3.44 gpa and getting in?

OK SO I’m so frustrated! I’ve been e-mailing and calling for the past month trying to get this mistake fixed from my application. I received an email saying that my application was incomplete because it was missing a transcript from a college that I took a high school course in and indicated on my Common App that I didn’t receive college credit or a transcript for.

The other schools I’ve applied to as a transfer applicant have removed this requirement. And HOLY GOD NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE YET. The deadline for EVERYTHING is the 28th (meaning that applications will start to be reviewed then). Do you think my application might actually be withdrawn from consideration bc I don’t have a transcript for 1 non-college credit course THAT NO ONE HAS REMOVED FROM MY TO-DO LIST.

Just a little frustrated. Someone help #lol.

gpa I would say you have a chance. but they preached up and down EC’s being involved with something your passionate about. Not community service…

So if I put down that I had wrestled at high school all four years and was a captain and placed in the state and won a lot of awards with that, do you think that would help anything?

But I talked about how reading with kids in a local classroom and how that has helped me, but I’m not sure if that helps anything

I did supplemental Instruction for Anatomy and physiology. I taught 5x50min classes with about 12 students per class. I had to make lesson plans over previously gone over material. Also had to sit in lecture, talk with professors daily, conf hours, about 15 hrs Monday thru Thursday.

Haha wow, that sounds really good! Haha I’m applying to become a sophomore there though

Yea and i had 5 classes of my own lol.
A&P 2 , gen chem 2, aca college transfer, sociology, principal of management

Wow haha that’s some solid ECs. What college do you go to?

Gtcc in Jamestown NC.

You need to call about your last transcript on Monday and explain. Best get it in order, or its 2017.
