Unofficial UNC Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

The wait is killing me.

@jtut2006 I was on hold 3 times before they canceled my calls yesterday… and when I did leave a message thursday no one responded to me. It’s just insane. The amount of emails I’ve sent over the past month. Really unfortunate.

Best get a direct line who you need to talk too. Also go in person tell them you have a deadline. I drove like 400 miles the 16th to get all my transcripts in. Do what you gotta do. Remember mailing it is out of the option but they could electronic send it but most non university schools wont. Just depends.

Its taking 2 weeks for regular decision, so two weeks for us.
Theirs was all due 15th wasn’t it? Theirs comes out this week.

I’d love if someone would chance me!

Yea most likely your good. EC’S are questionable though. They wanted something different or that applies to major. They preach involvement all i know.

L.O.R. would have helped to tell them you’re more than a one dimensional student.

Judging from last years transfer thread, there were many people who were accepted with mediocre or very little ECs. I think ECs are very stressed when you are applying in high school for freshmen admission because it is so very competitive…when you are a transfer, I feel like they are somewhat important but many transfers are working jobs, etc. to where they do not have time to find cancer cures and intern in space…i don’t know tho and I guess we’ll have to see. Just my two cents

I only say this because I applied to nc state EA for transfer admissions…and worried/doubted myself a great deal about not having as many ECs as the next person…but was just accepted with no ECS but work experience. I know they are two different institutions but nonetheless prove a good point.

Hypothetical wasn’t factoring work. But I take 15 hours of classes myself, I taught 5x50min SI classes, and I was working 25 hours a week. This was last fall it was very stressful.

Excuse my grammar I’m on the phone.

@jtut2006 I understand and I’m not downplaying anything you said…but you told @carolinagirl811 that her ECs were questionable…when in reality they may be above average…but regardless I can say unc is a school of their word and their admissions are “holistic” as they call it…I’ve seen people with cookie-cutter perfect grades/ECs get denied and ppl who were “questionable” get accepted. I think we all have lol. It all just depends on who they are looking for. No hard feelings at all tho. Blessings.

Yea i understand. You’re right about certain individuals they want. I hope i fit that category. By no means I am the best student on paper I do have good EC’s my cummualtive isn’t the greatest but it does show student who had a moment of clarity in my life for the past two years and has done well. Yep depends on the individual reading my application that day and looks at what ive done recently not over my beginning academic career. From 2006 to 2010 my college career was terrible, but i took off time and return in fall of 2014 to pull a 180 in my academic record.

Hi, @jtut2006 ! So, some of the extracurriculars I did and listed included Girls State, Co-Editor of my paper, cross country, and numerous service hours through clubs and on my own. I’m a military brat who has attended two high schools. Also, in January of 2015, I was diagnosed with pediatric lymphoma. So, while at Chapel Hill, I would be receiving treatment. I know nothing I did included research, internships, or anything super extraordinary, but I’m hoping my love of service and story will help some. I wasn’t able to participate in as many activities this semester because of the intensity of my treatment. I’m not really sure what LOR is… could you clear that up for me? And thank you @Gowolfpacks18! I hope that everything will be okay!

@carolinagirl811 LOR means letter of recommendation  you have great ECs despite your health issues and that alone is compelling (as previously mentioned I just have strictly work experience)…what I have learned from these threads is to never feel like your ECs are not important compared to someone else’s. Im sure UNC will be captivated by your story and what you could bring to their campus. take care.

Oh thanks, @Gowolfpacks18! I’m pretty new to College Confidential. You too!

Does advancement in the NCAA tournament have any effect on acceptance rates? Lol

No one said inferior ECs. If they aren’t listed we wouldn’t know them. But yes your chances are pretty solid.

Could someone chance me please?

Applicant originally from Nashville, TN

Currently a Freshman at Purdue University

Applied as a Global Studies major,

College GPA- 3.68 (A+,A+,A,A,A-,C+[C+ in Calculus didn’t need to take Calculus, took it as a challenge, wrote about it in my additional information portion])
Dean’s List and Semester Honors
22 credits completed, 14 credits from AP (don’t know if this is transferrable?), 15 in progress.

High School GPA- 3.41 I think? Went to 2nd best high school in TN and nationally ranked on U.S. News. 9 APs

Test Scores- LOL submitted my SATs, only took once but, 1700 CR+M+W, 560, 560, 580 with a 10 on the essay I think? Definitely the weakest part of my application, but hoping for the best and I am hoping that they don’t weigh as much as they would if it was First-Year Admissions.

EC’s- Dancer in the Purdue Contemporary Dance Company, College Mentor for College Mentor For Kids (club focused on education of at-risk youth in the surrounding area), Floor Leader and Representative for Floor Senator, Member of Anti-Racism Group on campus. Member of Pre-Law Society

High School Main EC’s- Competitive Dance, Beta Club President, Events Chair and Co-Chair of Community Service Committee in Student Government, Summer Intern for Law Firm Internship, Chief Page for College Mock Senate, AP Scholar

2 recommendations from 2 profs - I feel like they were pretty solid.

Essays definitely and hopefully one of my strongest portions of my app
Extra-Curricular Essay- Wrote about dance, basically been my whole life.
Additional UNC Essay- Wrote about what bothers me, wrote about coming out to my Dad and how he reacted so negatively and used that experience to dispel and dismiss the current discrimination towards cultural differences and how this impacts society and how it also impacted my relationship with my father.
Common App- UNC specific, I love love love UNC, and also wrote about my passion for global interactions, diversity, French and African culture, and how I could thrive and benefit from UNC.

Accepted/Applied to- Accepted to Tulane and UIUC so far, waiting to hear back from Vanderbilt, UNC :)), USC, and NYU.

Hoping for the best, a chance me would be awesome! Hopefully admissions can look beyond my test scores, I feel like I was genuine when writing my application and was as honest and forthcoming as I could be. Good luck to everyone and Go Heels! So pumped for these next few weeks!

Thanks!
