Yay, you guys crack me up! So glad I can share my excitement with you CC parents. Thanks for the well-wishes!
What happened to gain the perspective is that I printed out Pitt’s Cost Analysis Worksheet and I was doing figures on it because she has received another award from an OOS school. And honestly, now we have something to submit to the Cost Analysis Committee at Pitt, but that’s when I saw the numbers for in-state and OOS as plain as day. And we have demonstrated need everywhere my D has applied, so it was just a crazy moment for me.
@Winky1 —WOOHOO! Congrats. And yes it is a reckoning of how truly competitive it is for merit and being thankful and keeping things in perspective.
Back when we first started the whole college search thing we had visions of a free full ride somewhere and then it gradually came into perspective—fit, major, quality of school and affordability all blend together and the decision is not as black and white as we thought it would be.
@shbtup763 congratulations!! if you don’t mind my asking, did your initial acceptance letter mention anything about being considered for merit scholarships?
@AmyBeth68@Winky1 You’re right, Pitt is a good school that is still very reasonable cost wise. With the merit I got, it is a little cheaper than my in state flagship U of I. And it is cheaper than several other schools I applied to yet still seems to hold stronger academics. It’s a shame that collge prices are so high where 10-20k tuition costs are considered a decent price.
OOS (NY)
ACT: 33 (34 Superscored)
GPA: 4.7 Weighted
All AP & Honors from a completive school
Great EC’s
School of Nursing
$15K scholarship letter came today.
Very grateful for the consideration but it will still be more than some other options. It’s a great school and best of luck for those who enroll!
I assume the amount of merit will depend on whether the student is OOS or in-state, but will it depend on the college? say school of nursing is about $8000 more expensive than Dietrich ? Will the number of merit scholarship recipient to the number of admitted students? Say Dietrich enrolled over 3000 but nursing has less than 200 freshman.
I guess it would make sense, based on the numbers shown, @annamom, that arts and sciences could award more merit because there are way more students involved with that school. My guess is that they have a target percentage of students they’d like to give awards to and a total dollar amount alloted for each school to distribute.
In state son was accepted to honors in Dec. and received his merit letter today. $5,000/year. He has narrowed his choices down to 4, and Pitt is still in the running. Going to Honors Day in March. Good luck to all!
@Winky1 , YAYYYYYYYYY!!! FINALLLY!!! You just made my night. I have been hoping so much that your D would get recognized with merit because she deserves it! I love your perspective, too. Great insight and Congratulations!!!
