UT Austin 2011/12 Transfer Guide

In last year’s fall transfer thread, acceptances began to be reported on Monday, April 12th.

Wow really jealous, if penn state is so high above in standards why transfer to Texas? And GPA is standard for the most part a 4.0 is a 4.0. Get over yourself. You didnt explain it right and now your just coming off as full of yourself.

Hey a lil ray of hope for all of my fellow film students trying to attend the RTF program at UT, I just checked a site called studentfilms.com and it looks like quite a few had decisions last year by March 25 (earliest that I could see) Hopefully that gives us a fairly decent timeline. Good Luck to all of you!

I have a question for anyone transferring from ACC.

Years ago, I had to take remedial math classes and now I have two GPAs and am getting conflicting stories from ACC’s advisors about which GPA UT takes. My “cumulative non-remedial” GPA is 3.829 and my “cumulative” GPA is 3.591. One advisor said they take the “non-remedial” GPA and another advisor did this crazy calculation that ended up closer to the 3.59 GPA. Does anyone know which GPA they actually look at?

My husband told me that he knew a guy on the admissions committee once who said they only look at the grades from classes that are relevant to the major for which you are applying.

Since I have already applied, there is nothing I can do about it. I am really just curious and am seeking peace of mind. The waiting process is super tedious and I am ready to just find out. Any insight y’all have would be helpful and appreciative.

UT’s GPA calculation for admission consists of courses that are TRANSFERABLE. Input it into the UT ATE thing to find out if it transfers or not. I took a PE class last semester, but as it is not transferable, it will not be considered in my GPA for UT admission.

Stats/Majors that you applied for?

Is there a link to that UT ATE thing? That would be really helpful.

I applied to Fall 2011 Communications Pre-Journalism for my first choice and Liberal Arts Undeclared for my second choice.

I took 2 developmental classes from ACC. My GPA with those classes is 3.84 and, w/o those 2 math classes it’s a 3.82. UT is using the 3.82 GPA because those classes did not transfer. Hopefully that little info will be useful to you. :)

The Automated Transfer Equivalency system:
[UT Austin Automated Transfer Equivalency System](http://www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/ate/)

Well, I did some homework and am kind of discouraged by what I found. I was looking at the UT GPA Calculation Process and it says this:

“How the process works:
GPA is computed by dividing the total number of grade points by the total number of semester hours pursued. (Credit hours and grade points earned on the quarter system carry 2/3, or .66, the numerical value of those on the semester system.)
You won’t obtain transfer credit for courses in which you earn a grade of D+, D, D-, or F. However, if the course would normally be eligible for transfer, it will be used when your GPA is calculated.
If you repeat a course in an effort to raise your grade, each instance in which you took the course will be counted when your GPA is computed. However, transfer credit for the course may be counted in the total number of transferable hours only once.”

My problem is that I took a Govt class and a Hist class and made a D and C, respectively. I retook both of these classes and made an A in both. Because ACC replaces grades from repeated classes with the higher grade received, they calculate my non-remedial GPA as 3.82. (9 classes at 3 hours with a grade of A; 1 class at 5 hours with a grade of A; 1 class at 3 hours with a grade of C)

According to UT’s stated GPA calculation process, they will count each time I took the repeated classes (giving me D, C, A, A).

So I punched all of that into this GPA calculator:

[Registration | Registrar | University of Texas at Austin](http://registrar.utexas.edu/students/grades/gpa/calculator/)

and it gives me a 3.4878 GPA. When plugged into their scale, I am somewhere between a B+ and an A-.

[GPA | Transfer | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/transfer/admission/factors/gpa/)

GPA is computed on the following scale:

A+ = 4 points per semester hour
A = 4 points per semester hour
A- = 3.67 points per semester hour
B+ = 3.33 points per semester hour
B = 3 points per semester hour
B- = 2.67 points per semester hour
C+ = 2.33 points per semester hour
C = 2 points per semester hour
C- = 1.67 points per semester hour
D+ = 1.33 points per semester hour
D = 1 point per semester hour
D- = 0.67 points per semester hour
F = 0 points per semester hour

I am kind of angry at ACC for giving me a false sense of having a higher GPA than I do. If my plan was to stay here and just get an Associates Degree, that would be awesome. But there is no way that I would sell myself short that way. I guess the moral of my long-winded story here is that I really wish I had taken college more seriously when I was young and right out of high school. I really hope that whoever is on the admissions committee takes into consideration the fact that I took 11 classes last year and made A’s in everything except for one class that is not even relevant to my major of choice. I have reformed myself a great deal and take school very seriously now. Hopefully they really do read the essays and look at the big picture, instead of just looking at a static GPA.

Thanks for letting me vent. :)

Oh and by the way, the ACC advisor I spoke to today called me a perfectionist. My more recent grades are not the work of a perfectionist. They are the work of someone who wants to go to one of the best public universities in the United States. I am now fully convinced that ACC has low standards for what they require of their students. She also told me that C’s are acceptable. Are you freaking kidding me? C’s may be “passing”, but they are devastating.

“ACC advisor I spoke to today called me a perfectionist.”

This is not right. Obviously, if your dream is to go to UT, it is completely reasonable to want to get a 3.45 or higher. It is reasonable to want to get as high as possible. That is not perfectionism, that is reality.

From another perspective, your GPA is higher than average. It is possible that it is higher than hers was, if/when she went to a university. You could have inadvertently offended her. You never know. There could be a personal element that you touched on.

Who knows, maybe repeating the classes and getting A’s will help you in the eyes of admissions more than just a casual average increase.

1) Current College: A FLORIDA community college, yet am still a Texas Resident until I get it changed
2) Current GPA: 3.46
3) Probable total GPA after Spring Semester (in May): 3.6
4) First Choice Major/College: Business
5) Second Choice Major/College: Need to do more research on that…
6) Courses completed: 15 hours so far, yet will try to apply come after the FALL semester of this year when I get close to 45, hopefully will stay 3.6 or better
7)Extracurricular Activities/Recommendations/Essays: Eagle Scout/ Assistant Manager at the job I work for/ good recommendations/ REAL Good essays

@4shotlatte

Good points. I appreciate the perspective. I think I am just stressing because I thought my transfer GPA was way higher than I figured it out to be today. Fortunately, I can start over fresh and maintain my A’s once I get to whichever university accepts me.

Looks like the two people claiming we’d hear about decisions today were wrong? Maybe you weren’t clear and were given the final decision date for freshman admits or something. Thanks for getting my hopes slightly up, you punks :'-(

I mean, we can still wait out until April 1st to see if there was any merit in their comments. I don’t think two people would be dual-■■■■■■■■ here, although if they are then all I can say is /ubersadface.

I called again today and was told that depending on the College that was applied to, there would be different notification dates. That was all though.

I was hoping for a decision today, too! I have been spamming F5 on my Application Status Check page all day, every day. When I spoke to admissions earlier this month, they said it would be mid April through May. I think that is more realistic. Who knows? Maybe this time next month we will all know our respective fates.
