CS is in the College as well as the school of Engineering and Applied Sciences for UVA. Basically the course work for a CS major is either more engineering based or arts based depending on what school they apply.
However most university’s like Virginia Tech, and GMU have CS under their engineering program therefore the “right courses” would mean engineering classes like Calc I-III , Physics, Chem, etc
Question- I’m applying to CAS as a rising sophomore and ACT scores aren’t required. If mine is a 28, would it benefit me to not send it at all? My college gpa is 3.86 and hs gpa is 97/100
You have a good chance as long as you are in state. I wouldn’t bother sending the ACT since it’s below the UVA average and they don’t even require it in the first place. They mainly just care about your college grades and if they’re transferable and if you’re aligned to a certain major and have a good chance at succeeding at UVA. HS GPA is another plus. Good Chance
I agree don’t send the ACT unless you have to. I don’t remember if they require it for 2nd year applicants.
Hi, I just wanted to confirm that only essay choice for CAS is: 1. How do the possible career or professional plans you indicated on the Common Application relate to your planned course of study?
Also if anyone had any opinions on me that’d be great.
Applying to CAS (Business)
HS GPA 3.2 UW honors (challenging school)
34 credits. 3 course requirements for UVA CAS (I’m listing that I’m taking calc over the summer, so I’ll have the 4 I need)
OOS
My college is a school that isn’t very selective, but you need decent grades to get in
CGPA 3.64, 3.85 Midyears
Founder of early stage tech start up
two impressive internships
Founded investment club in high school
Catholic charity at college
ACT 25 (submitted it when applying from HS, can’t take it back)
Personal, authentic essays (I think)
A chance would be nice.
Thanks.
It’s really hard for me to chance out of state applicants. I really have no idea how this will turn out. If you were instate and attended a CC, I’d say decent chance since your GPA is a little above the 3.5 mark. You can do some research over past years’ applicants and it seems that 2nd year transfers have pretty high GPAs above the 3.5 and a lot of them are in state. Again, you being OOS makes this a really complicated case and I have no idea how they will judge you. Your HS GPA isn’t really a problem since you’re doing well this year, but I would try to shoot for a 4.0 this current semester
Thanks for the honest feedback. Well I’m glad I was able to post a better midyear. I definitely will try for the 4.0, that’s always hard but worth it.
Take care!
Question: UVA says they prefer 3rd year transfers. How strong is the preference? Do they have higher expectations for 2nd years?
Okay so yes they prefer students that have finished their associates because they are the perfect transferable students and no longer have to take general eds that are usually given to freshman. I believe hundreds of 2nd year transfers are still accepted every year. From what I’ve seen from reddit and college confidential forums, 2nd year transfers seem to have higher college GPA’s than 3rd years. They also want to see that you’ve taken half of the required general eds and they will not accept transfers with general eds all over the place and not very good progress on getting their degree. From instate, the average 2nd year’s GPA seems to be in the (3.7-4.0) range, so yes I’d say it is definitely harder to get in as 2nd year.
Your GPA is already a 3.93. Your HS and SAT are fine and obviously won’t hold you back considering you’ve gotten almost perfect grades at BU. If you can send a very good midterm report also, you will most definitely get into UVA.
Thanks, uvact. I don’t want to get my hopes too high yet, but hopefully I’ll see you on campus next semester! Still a lot of waiting to go, though.
What are the thoughts on the midterm report? 2 of my classes don’t even start until March 14 so should I submit a midterm report late, submit it without those two classes, or just not submit?
Not submit it at all. You already have a lot of credits and midterm report doesn’t tell the college that much either. Grades are still subject to change and I’m not sure about UVA, but W&M says that they only care about final grades. I’m sure UVA has a similar basis to that, but UVA still requests midterm grades from applicants. If you pull A’s and if you really want to bother getting signatures from your professors, go ahead. I don’t think it’s worth it in your case.
Is there anyone here who goes to NOVA and knows how to send mid year reports? From what I know, I don’t think they have midterm grades so is there any alternative way to send it to UVA? I had 4.0 last semester with 17 credits but since I’m still a Freshman so I don’t have much credits accumulated. I might get a B in one class this semester that might bring my second semester GPA to 3.75 but overall my first year GPA will still be pretty decent in total. As of now (heading into the midterm range of the semester) I have a 4.0 in all my second semester classes. It would be a huge advantage if they saw my midterm grades since even I ended with a B in one class towards the end of semester it wouldn’t really matter as the decision would already be made because I’m taking regular length classes that end at the beginning of May. I have 17 credits this current semester along with 8 I’m planning to take over the summer. All my classes that I’m taking or have taken are what is required by UVA so I am strictly following the classes they want. Along with my AP credits I am planning to complete a total of 47 credits entering my 2nd year of college which is around 1/3 of my degree required for the undergraduate.
@CTUR782, I am a NOVA student applying as a third year transfer student to UVA under the guaranteed admission agreement. I just turned my application in a half hour ago! Anyways, I called them recently with the same question, and the lady at the UVA und. graduate admission said the mid-year report is completely optional/not required and I don’t have to worry about it. I am not sure if that would apply to you as a freshman year student with no GA, so I suggest calling the school as that is really the best way to find out.
I know for 3rd year transfer it doesn’t matter because you have enough credits under your belt, but I think it would
be beneficial for me since I’m a Freshman. The thing I’m trying to figure out is the process to send them, since Nova doesn’t do them officially I was wondering if there is an alternate process to send them. Thanks for the help btw. Good luck with your admission!
@CTUR782 Most schools don’t do them. As a matter of fact, I actually have not heard of any that do. Print the mid-term report from the common app and have your professors sign it. You will be able to e-mail it. I definitely recommend any freshman to submit it. If you’re a sophomore I’d recommend it, if it is either equal, or above your current GPA. It shows that you’re on track to finish strong.
Now that everyone has submitted their app (or so I hope), the waiting game begins! Stressful, but try not to focus too much on it.
I bet it’ll be tough. I really despise long waiting time for decisions.
