VA Tech Class of 2021 -- Engineering Admissions Decisions

My son was accepted RD into Engineering in the first round.

GPA 3.55 UW/ 3.85W personal hardship during 10th grade was explained in extra info on application.
ACT 34
SAT 1540
OOS (California)
Double Legacy
Only 3 AP’s (one last year and 2 senior year) Math/ science classes always honors
Activities: Eagle Scout, JV/ Varsity tennis, Jazz and symphonic band, lots of volunteer service, a few other clubs (nothing else outstanding tbh)
No merit or financial aid (we don’t qualify)

My husband actually spoke to dean of engineering at an Alumni reception here a year ago and according to him (the dean), “3.9” and up was the number they looked for. I’m surprised my son was accepted.

So far he’s been waitlisted both at IUIC and Purdue for engineering (applied mid-December), although at Purdue he chose an alternate major and then got accepted since he’s still a bit undecided anyway.

Not sure where he’ll end up - awaiting decision from many California schools and a few others but we both think so far that VT is the best for him since he is undecided, they don’t declare until 2nd year, they have a huge variety of engineering disciplines to choose from, and we have family in NOVA.

^^ oops I meant UIUC of course.

My son got accepted to Eng. with 32 ACT and 3.5 UW (4.65 W). OOS. 4 years of FRC plus tons of community service. Going to visit next week. Trying to decide versus our state flagship. Also, does any know if VT is willing to allow gap years? Son is considering a year abroad.

Our experience is that it is easy to take a gap year at Virginia Tech. My son is a student in the Engineering school. He finished his freshman year, and is now doing a gap year in Europe. It was very easy to take the gap year. All he has to do is sign up for courses this month to be able to resume at Virginia Tech as a sophomore in September. It is not the case that he has to re-register as a Virginia Tech student or anything like that.

Kalanamc when you say 3.9 do you mean weighted or unweighted? Anyone know how Vt weights?

+0.5 for honors; +1.0 for AP?

I’m guessing 3.9 is unweighted since weighting is so variable school to school

I’m not sure, and evidently there is no rigid formula anyways (that we know of) since they are holistic AND my ds thankfully got in under that number!

Hi,
I am an international student and i got into General Engineering on 22 feb. I was wondering if anyone got his/her Honors Admission acceptance ? If no, then do have any idea when will they release it ? I emailed the admissions on the 1st march and they said it would come out in a couple of weeks.

I also got accepted into general engineering in February and have not received any honors college information, though I qualify for admission to the honors college

@jthomas7 Just because you “qualify” for admission to the honors college, it doesn’t mean that you’ll get in. Virginia Tech reviews your application holistically, and they’re dead serious about that. I have a 4.37 gpa and 1410 on the SAT and I did not get into the honors program this year.

For the stragglers who will hear from VT this Friday, March 17th, does anyone know what time the admissions decisions will be posted? Thanks!

They started coming out at 5pmET on the 20th, and if you remember, it was a disaster.

The past couple of years they have come out around 4:30 though…so might consider checking early to avoid the crash…if they do indeed post a little early again. Also, remember the majority did not hear early so you are not part of the few waiting.

@STEM2017 That was a nightmare! Hours of refreshing to not see a decision. Ugh!

OK, good to know we don’t have to start shadowing the computer until 4:30 p.m. All the best to everyone!

S can long into his VT account now. Hope he’ll be able to tomorrow when the decisions come out.

Good luck @VABogart! Rooting for you guys!

Todays the day!

just a few more hours to go ! hope its not as bad as the day the first wave came out !!
