Weird email

i got the same thing only it was a letter and it had an invitation to attend an information session which i attended on Sunday, at the session they said that you had to be invited to get in, that not everyone got it and that 90% of the people who were invited had already been admitted. how much of this is 100% correct i dont know that is just the info i acquired at the session so dont take anything that serious. Good Luck to you all!

hey crazykidwanabe they said thaat 90% of those who recieved it were to be admitted???

crazykidwanabe, you've just incited yourself a riot.

But if what you say is true, that's awesome. However, I'm still sketchy since so many of us who got the e-mail are white and non-math/science majors....way to play the game, Berkeley!

crazykidwanabe, do you remember how many ppl attended that LA session?

crazykidwannabe... is that letter different than this diversity e-mail we're talking about? or is it the same thing but you got it in the real mail....

the letter is from the Coalition for Excellence and Diversity in Mathematics, Science, and Engineering, and they invite the applicant to attend an Information session that was help on MArch 13, 2005 at Los Angeles Public Library or on the Berkekley campus at Valley Life SCince Building

If anybody went to the one on campus... was there a tour possibly? I saw a large group of well-dressed teenagers being carted around by a tour leader by 4.0 Hill today, and thought maybe that was it.

I hope what you said was true crazykidwannabe cuz I got the letter as well except it was not by email and I am a Latina who wants to pursuit engineering at Cal. My question is where the kids that attended the meeting apply for the math/science/engineering departments and where they minorities. thanks.

the kids that attended the meeting were mostly minorities and all had applied to majors in science/math/engineering but there was plenty of non-minorities so dont worry. i would say about a little below 200 kids attended and i asked the speaker whether you could be in the program only if your major was math/science/engineering and she said no and let this cal student who is a history major and is very involved in the program. and as i said before i am not sure how accurate the whole 90% thing is but thats what i heard and if it is true there is plenty more room for others to be admitted so dont worry. Good Luck

wow i hope your right about the 90% thing crazy, i got one too a while ago and i just deleted it cuz it looked like some diverstiy student group propaganda. It also invited me to the tour thingy, but i am out of state and live in Wisconsin.....not really a chance I was gonna make it

I also will never qualify for financial aid, and I am as white as the come

crazykidwanabe- you received the following as a letter/not email??

DIVERSITY AT CAL: PEOPLE AND PROGRAMS!!!

Dear Cal Applicant,
As faculty and staff from U.C. Berkeley's Coalition
for Excellence and Diversity in Mathematics, Science,
and Engineering, we are very excited that you have
applied for admission to Berkeley.

Although admission decisions have not yet been made,
we want to give you a closer look at what Berkeley can
offer its students in mathematics, science, and
engineering. We hope you will carefully compare
academic life and student life at different colleges
and universities as you consider your college options.

Berkeley's admission process looks at grades, test
scores, life's challenges, and more, in a
comprehensive review of all applications. To learn
more, you may view the following to see what Berkeley
is looking for when it selects its incoming freshmen
class.
(...on and on....)

yeah thats what i got in the mail

If anyone's going to the one later this week, maybe they can ask the people there about the e-mail/letter.

crazykidwanabe, you said you had to be invited to go to that thing, but I'm re-reading the e-mail and I don't see ANY way that they'd be able to distinguish someone who got the letter and someone who didn't get it.

A person could easily have came on CC and saw this thread where the information was posted and attended it.

The first time I read the email when I got it 3 weeks ago I totally thought it was spam. I mean c'mon...a subject line in all caps?

I so hope that 90% thing you said earlier is true because it would be a real boost after getting rejected from UCLA :(

Also, who said the 90% thing? A reliable source or what?

the admissions representative said the 90% thing and i got the email and the letter and the letter had the invitation including a map

Yeah, the e-mail says:

Call us at 510.642.5881, leave your name and address or e-mail, and we will send you a map and a schedule.

Did you call them to request one? I wonder if anyone could have called and requested one. Please please please let the 90% thing be true.

the valecdictorian in my school got it

iono ... i didnt apply there

Look back a few post 2+2=5 i posted that i called and requested and i quoted the letter on what it has to say about admissions

Okay i did the dirty work and dug up the post

Alright in the email it gave a number, and i called and left a message. Then i got a mail from them with more info on the coalition thing and in the mail it directly reads:
"Although admission decisions have not yet been made, the reception will give you a closer look at what Berkeley can offer its students in mathematics, science, and engineering and will provide you with valuable insights as you compare academic life and student life at different colleges and universities. Since this reception is NOT connected to your admissions status, we would like to share information that would be valuable no matter what college or university you eventually attend. Admission decisions for Berkeley will be mailed on March 31 by the UC Berkeley Office of Admissions."

Hope this clears things up

Laguna, I saw that post...but why would the admissions representative lie?
