I'm an out of state student (Texas) and I'm applying for FSU's criminology program. My unweighted GPA is a 3.56, and my weighted GPA on a 5.0 scale is a 4.39. My class rank as of the end of junior year is 113/681.

I got an 1820 on my June SAT (600 R, 630 M, 590 W) and I just retook it on October 1st...hopefully I did a bit better so my superscore will be higher!

I have a good amount of awards from band and am an accomplished flute player. I'm in NHS and am also in FNHS as a social officer (event coordinator). My essay should be pretty good because I've gotten five trusted people to edit it.

Also, what are some other good schools in Florida for criminology? I was thinking of applying to UF but I really don't think I'd get in.

I think you’re in. You probably have a shot at UF as well, although you might have to apply for summer. I vote for FSU though since I think our criminology program is generally regarded as best in the state.

Disagree with above poster, (( IN MY OPINION )) since you are as an out of state candidate, your SAT is a bit under average. Advice, Sign-up for the next SAT and hopefully you can increase your chances. Regarding the remark about UF with your “current stats” and out of state, not a chance in hell with an 1820. Strive for an SAT score range over 2040. Good Luck

An 1820 SAT isn’t bad. That should be within FSU’s range. Your GPA is solid. If you were in-state, I would say that it is a done-deal. I’m not sure how much being an out-of-state applicant would affect you.

1820 is a solid SAT score. With a 4.39 GPA (something tells me your actual FSU GPA isn’t quite that high), you have a very good chance of being accepted.

The 4.39 GPA is on a 5.0 scale at my school; I don’t know what my FSU GPA is though. Is there a way that I can calculate it to get an approximation?

Does FSU do superscoring for SATs? (Picking the highest scores from different test dates to make the highest total score possible). And if FSU actually does superscoring, and I get about a 1900 for that, do y’all think I’d have a better shot of getting in?

That’s exactly how my school adds weight for the 5.0 scale GPA, FSUDAD1! My school only uses English, Math, Science, History, and Foreign Language courses in said GPA as well. So I guess my FSU GPA would be the same as my weighted GPA at school?

I’ve heard that FSU is less likely to reject students who applied by the October deadline, and that I would probably be deferred instead of rejected. Is this true?

They reject very few people outright for the first deadline. Like you said, they tend to defer people who are borderline. If you apply before the early deadline, with the GPA you say you have and your SAT score, I will be very surprised if you don’t get accepted in December.

Oh yikes. I almost forgot about my transcript!

I might have to get that rush delivered now. The website says “Applications And All Supporting Documents Received By”, instead of “Processed By”. So if I send in the rest of my application on the 12th, and rush deliver the transcript so that it gets to the admissions office on the 13th or 14th, would my transcript be considered “late”? I know that they need time to process things so that’s what’s worrying me.

Worst case scenario: If I miss the early action deadline, but have my application in real early for the other deadline, will that hurt my admissions chances as an out-of-stater?

Rush the delivery and you will be fine. If your application, essay and resume are all in, they will give some latitude on the transcript arriving OOS. Aim for the first date and go from there.

Exactly, and email them so they know it’s on the way.

There are so many benefits to being accepted in December compared to March, namely housing. You want to be able to sign up right when you are accepted in December so you can choose your hall. The 2nd deadline people either don’t get a choice or don’t get housing at all.

Thank you so much y’all! I’m going to pick up my transcript from school by Thursday at the latest, and will take it to the post office for one-day delivery. I’m willing to pay the price if that’s what it takes to increase my chances of admission. With one day delivery it would arrive by Friday the 14th, that’s not so bad, right?

Okay so I should email them the day I deliver it to let them know that it’s being mailed, so they’ll know that it shouldn’t be considered late?

I do not know how your school works, but I would honestly try and get your transcripts as soon as possible. If you go to get them on Thursday and get told they’ll have them on Friday, that already could put you in a precarious position.

I know it’s likely different, but we were lucky at my high school for them to do everything like that electronically for Florida’s SUS schools. Even then though it still took a couple days for everything to be completed.

I wouldn’t chance that on Thursday you get told to wait until Friday. I’d be there tomorrow trying to get it- that way if they do get delayed, you actually have a couple days’ buffer.
