What do you guys think.

I am currently at CCC right now and applying for fall 08. I have completed all my preqs except this one Calc 2 that I am taking right now. Currently I have a 4.0, but because I have such busy schedule right now (work from 6:45 and return at 9 or 10 after classes at night almost every day) I don't think I will be able to get an A in calc2. The thing that I am worried about is the fact that UC will see this as negative trend. How much do you guys think will this affect my chances. I have calulated that if I got a B in Calc2 my gpa would go down to 3.9 ish.

Thank You ppl! =)

edit: btw, my major is econ for cal and busecon for ucla (i have not yet completed accounting 2 for ucla)

Since you're starting out at the top base line I would imagine that the "trend" doesn't apply very much. It's like batting 1.000 in baseball, you can't do any better. I think it makes more sense for people starting out with a lower GPA and proving that they can overcome some mediocre performances by improving their grades as they progress.

I would be more worried in getting a B in a major prereq course, assuming calc2 is a prereq for econ at ucb.

you are paranoid, adamantine lol.
one B won't kill your chance.

^I do have to admit, having a 4.0 does make you paranoid, at least in my own experience --anything under an A panics me.

yea that is true.... and yea calc2 is my prereq.... sadly -___-

Why is it that the people with 4.0/3.9 GPA's are always asking what there chances are? Obviously you are going to be competitive to any major you apply to as long as you have most of you prereq's done.

Because the word competitive holds vague meaning.

Well the average admitted for the last 6 years is about 3.8 http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof.htm so I don't think you would have much trouble getting in. Just try maintain a 4.0 or 3,9 average and you will be fine.

what if i get 3 b's out of all 4 classes that i am taking =)

3bs is a downward trend tho
but they focus more on ur prereq such as ur calc 2
if possible bring it up
there is a section on ur apps that ask u if u have anything to clarify or that sort
u can write about ur job affecting ur work or even in your personal statement...
but then again they like seeing that u can organize your time well... that might be a downside

I would beg your employers for time off -assuming you can afford it.

well i work around 30-32 hours / week
statistics private tutor/ school tutor
and high school tutor

taking 17 semester units
calc2, japanese3, sociology1, and accounting1

i think i can get A's on jap3,soc1 and accounting
but i dont know about calc 2..... may be at most b, i would throw a party if i get a

Your best bet would probably be to explain your schedule as it is, which *may * have caused the C, or B in Calc.

would u consider that as heavy schedule tho? cause i might be the only one that see it as is. They might see my schedule as just normal collegekid schedule.

I would say it's above average, considering you're working 30 hours a week; just stress the amount you're working, and the time conflictions.

I stress more on how I also support my family and that is why I gotta work, and of course, along with the 30 hours

what u think?

thanx for replying u all

well, with your gpa and the amount of hours that you work per week, you really should worry. I talked to a Berkeley admission officer the other day and he said Cal takes Jobs into account. He mentioned someone that got in( I forgot which department though) with a 3.3 who worked full time.

what do u mean i should worry? worry about what? my grades?

i would also throw a party if i got an a in ochem
