No letter for me today. Maybe only those named finalists got letters? Anyone get a regrets letter? I wasn't expecting to make it and it should have been here today no problem. Congrats to those who made it!

Nope...because a good number of ppl who don't get finalist get some sort of money anyways.

On Learnlink last night, Emory rep posted that all award letters will go out BY TUESDAY and it will be up online on Wed. So, there is hope for those of us who haven't heard yet!

Haven't gotten any letter yet...I hope it's not a bad sign :D

DS received letter today dated 2/13/08. He was selected as a John Emory Scholar, awarded $23,800/per yr for up to eight semesters. He does not move on to the Finalist Weekend.

Congrats to all that are moving on!

^^ Where are you located?

I live in Virginia Beach and just found out by mail that I am a John Emory Scholar, too.

$23,800/year is a consolation prize???? That's amazing......Congratulations to all!

Anybody else who is going to Finalist weekend: what are you writing down for the top three departments and/or faculty members that interest you? I wrote down my major, but as for faculty, I'm completely lost. I'm trying to not look like I know nothing about the university.

Edit: rodney: well, if you are receiving financial aid, and you were an average middle-class American family, the 23,800 would more or less disappear by reducing your eligibility and need. In fact, even the full-tuition scholarship wouldn't have much if any effect on what you actually will have to pay Emory - it simply shifts around the money from need grant to merit scholarship (and you get the perks of class selection priority, housing priority, etc).

Of course, many of those applying are not from the average middle-class family and would have had to pay nearly all of the COA and that scholarship is a huge consolation prize.

Rodney, actually the $10k-$14k/year Liberal Arts Scholarships that go to the people that don't get a John Emory or Finalist are the consolation prizes...still amazing....

Phonyreal: Yups, considering that there were no semi-finalists at all for Goizueta (only 10 finalists), these are great.....You guys should all be very happy...

JMW: Yes, I did realize that, but when you think that the John Emory's are not even the top award, that's amazing..... Good Luck!!!

i haven't gotten anything yet.

they say everything should be sent out and on opus by wednesday right? i thought I read that somewhere (maybe previous post)

Yeah...in the LL conference for scholar candidates, they said everything should be online by Wednesday and the last batch of letters was sent out today (so there's hope for people who haven't heard anything yet!)...I'm hoping they mean that there's a script that runs and posts it at 12:01 tonight....rather than it just getting randomly posted tomorrow.

aaah im so nervous! i'll be checking opus all morning now...

Grr....got John Emory Scholar. Well, I guess I can't go to Emory now. Oh well.

how is john emory bad? i mean its not the full tuition, but its 2/3 tuition, so thats really good! you should be proud of yourself!

"Grr....got John Emory Scholar. Well, I guess I can't go to Emory now. Oh well."

sorry, i'm just not following that thought process.

step back a moment. You got 2/3 tuition for a top 20 college.

phonyreal: I'm so glad to hear that there is still hope! You bet I'll be checking opus

I can understand if your income is too high to qualify for Financial Aid.

The remaining $25k or so a year is a huge chunk of money to take out in loans if your parents are not contributing. I mean, this is just undergraduate education; if somebody is planning on going to graduate school or taking a job that doesn't pay very well, $100k for a bachelor's degree is pretty steep especially when you are paying it out of your own pocket.

If I had to pay the entire COA of Emory, I'd be very likely to go elsewhere to a low ranking school that would offer a full-ride (which many of us could get without much effort) or at least full-tuition. The difference between say UGA and Emory for somebody wanting to be a teacher for example is not worth the cost. Personally I'm planning on doing graduate work (med school or research), and so have set my debt incurred for undergrad at $45k or so over four years. I'd like to not be paying back debt for the rest of my life.

jmw123: I just searched the website for faculty members in the department I'm interested in. I picked some who are doing cool research..

Well, I live about 50 minutes from Emory and panic has now fully ensued.
I was left in suspense over the weekend and now i got no letter today. this is really effed up and i'm getting reaaaaaaaaaaaaally scared
