“The press about replacing Hoke is affecting recruiting.”

David Brandon has to be aware of the rumors. Why he hasn’t commented and/or reaffirmed that Brady is his man, is a justifiable reason for concern of any recruited athlete. Perhaps Brandon has made some comments, but I haven’t seen them. If there is no chance Brandon is going to get rid of Hoke, he needs to say something NOW!

^Because Brandon is a smart and slimy politician. Self-preservation at its best.
Don’t you feel that you always hear/see Brandon during 2011, especially towards the end of the season, but he has all but disappeared as we started sucking this year. Quick to take credit and quick to dodge the crap.

He doesn’t want to be attached to this Hoke fiasco, and also keeping his options open and not declaring his allegiance by not taking a side.

If we by luck and accident beat Ohio State this Saturday, I bet you 100 bucks you will see Brandon plastering his face all over the place, taking credit and telling people he has all the faith in Hoke.

This is not to say I think Brandon is a bad AD. If anything I think he has done great. But to say I dislike him as a person is an understatement.

A lot of big name coaches started in the MAC.

I wouldn’t expect most big name schools to grab a guy right from his first real coaching job. I’m not even sure what the coaching change landscape looked like then.

He took over awful, awful teams. No one should expect an 11 win season right away.

I also believe Peppers will stick around. He committed early enough and he has recruited hard enough for us.

This is the start of a long painful separation by Peppers. He wants to be prepared for the pros by pros, not a three ring circus. Hope I’m wrong but the writing is on the wall.

I would think, as a defensive player, Hoke and Mattison would more than prepare Peppers for the NFL. We have no deficiencies on that side of the ball. I still think, that even if we make the wrong decision and fire Hoke, the new guy would have to mess up pretty hard to not keep Peppers around.

“This is the start of a long painful separation by Peppers. He wants to be prepared for the pros by pros, not a three ring circus. Hope I’m wrong but the writing is on the wall.”

What’s the policy - after you give a verbal, if you take visits you are no longer considered committed and it is back to an open recruit. A - Peppers said he’ll visit B - he follows through on that C- No longer considered a commitment D - likely gone. Hoke can’t go back on the policy now can he?

This, along with a very painful end of the season, playing, maybe losing in a bad bowl and what is an uncommitted 18 yr old going to think.

Again, I very much hope I’m wrong. You do have a good point on Mattison, he is a pro but, if he is evaluating the coaching staff as a whole it may not look so good.

Since it’s obvious that most top recruits could care less about education, Peppers might very well be on the way out. I really hate what has happened to college football.

bearcats, I agree with most of what you said, but this “MAC level coach” argument is a fallacy. Look at the Western Michigan coaching staff in 1985. Jack Harbaugh, Jim Harbaugh, Greg Mattison, Brady Hoke. There are plenty of other examples, but this is the one I know off the top of my head. The MAC has historically been a coaching hotbed.

Bo Schembechler started his head coaching career at Miami of Ohio.

Hoke’s main mistake so far was hiring Borges as OC. If we had a competent OC, Michigan would be 10-1 at the very worst this year. We should not fire Hoke. There is no such thing as a winning program without strong coordinators. We simply do not know how good a head coach Hoke is until he has strong coordinators at his side. Hoke’s philosophy meshes perfectly with that of the Big 10. His recruiting style and attitude are perfect for the Michigan job.

Krw, Bo coached under Woody at OSU, not at Miami. He was assistant coach under Woody at OSU in the late 50s and early 60s. In 1962, he accepted the head coaching job at Miami of Ohio until Michigan hired him in 1969.

…so if Hoke is coaching for Michigan next year (looks like he will be), he will likely be around for a while. Unless I’m missing something, the schedules for the next two years look easier. We’ve basically replaced Iowa and Nebraska with Rutgers and Maryland. Hoke should be doing better against these teams…even if he had the team he has today. True, we play Notre Dame, Michigan Stage, and Ohio State away next year, but Penn state is at home…it sorta evens out in the sense that it likely doesn’t matter if Ohio State is home or away (at least in 2014).

Also, Michigan is clearly improving…Gardner is improving…even our offense is improving. I don’t think they should be improving so slowly…that’s for another post though.

In my opinion, this season is his last chance. If this team wins 9+ games and wins one game against our two rivals (MSU and OSU), Hoke’s job is secure. If the team wins fewer than 9 games, and loses to both MSU and OSU, I think he should be fired.
