well, on the phone they said the business week. so weird. but i guess what’s online must be correct GAHH. cannot believe it’s so close

i really hope it’s during the business week because then i’ll have classes to distract me! it actually really doesn’t make sense for them to be sending emails out on a saturday

Okay, let’s see if we can address all of the questions posted since Friday.

1) We will try to an edition of the Overheard in Committee blog during Transfer Committee so stay studend. You can also follow Bryn’s blog as she is a transfer student.

2) We do not yet have an exact date for when decisions will be emailed. You can’t really “time” Committee deliberations but we will be sure to notify students once decisions are released and emails are in in-boxes

3) High school grades become less and less important with each passing semester of college. The more completed college course work we have to review the less your high school record becomes the primary academic record. For those applying to enter W&M as sophomores, high school grades will still carry decent weight because you’ll have only one semester of complete college course work but we do look heavily at that semester and your mid-semester grades.

McBain, we certainly do recognize that those who re-open have a sustained interest in W&M and we do appreciate that. At this point, nothing you need to do to express your interest. We assume that anyone who applies is interested in W&M

Hello Everyone. Just joined this thread. I am a resident of Virginina, originally from Chicago. I am going to a community college at the moment. I am a veteran, and have been going to school full time since I finished my contract with the military. Best of luck to everyone. These coming weeks are going to to rough!

My mid-semester grades consisted of 6 As and 1 B, so hopefully that will help my application! I’m also taking 300 level classes, so my classes aren’t easy (I’m a freshman).

@W&M Admission

First and foremost, thank you for having an admissions office that interacts on CC!!! If admitted into the college, do students receive aid information as well as transfer credit in the packet with the admissions letter?

Question, has anyone received any information regarding financial aid yet? I wonder if that means your more likely to be accepted.

yellowmari- the admissions decision and financial aid are totally separate processes. i got lots of emails from the financial aid office requesting additional information, but that is in no way related to admission decisions. they have no idea who is going to be admitted and who is not (until decisions by the admissions office are released)

Yeah, it even says the following on the Financial Aid e-mails:

NOTE: For entering fall 2011 students, we are sending this request prior to admission decisions being made. It is not meant to indicate you have been admitted. If you were admitted in Early Decision, we need this information in addition to the Early Decision Application you submitted earlier.

Gaahhhh, I didn’t get super worried until right now! I had been pretty good about keeping it in the back of my head and focusing on other things, but now I’m concerned.

William and Mary has always been the school I wanted to attend. I was wait-listed last year and am reapplying after spending one year at another university. I can’t see myself any place but W&M next year!

If W&M is the only school we applied to for transferring, does that have any effect on admissions decisions at all? I realize it’s a long shot and will have minimal effect, but does it matter that I’m applying to transfer because W&M is my dream school (vs applying because you’re unhappy with where you are now or simply want it as a choice amongst other schools)?

…no, because W&M has no idea that it’s the only school you’re applying to. They also have no idea if you’re applying because it’s your dream school or because you just want to go somewhere other than your current school. They can, however, probably tell from your essay how much you want to go to W&M and deduce whether you’re just applying for the heck of it or because you love it.

can transfer students be waitlisted?

Okay, several more questions to answer today. You all are CC marathoners!

Financial aid information is emailed to students about a week after decisions are emailed. Transfer credit evaluations are done over the summer once someone decides to enroll at W&M. The Day for Admitted Transfers will have financial aid and transfer credit counselors present to answer questions.

If Financial Aid has contacted you it simply means they need additional information to evaluate your financial need should you be admitted. They send those letters to any student whose FAFSA indicates certain information but receiving that contact from Fin Aid has nothing to do with whether or not you might be admitted.

We have no idea whether W&M is the only school you applied to so that carries no weight in our process however, as McBain stated, a well-written essay will express your interest in W&M as will re-opening an application. We certainly appreciate a student’s continued interest however desire cannot make a non-competitive applicant competitive.

Yes, those applying for fall transfer admission can be waitlisted.

for students who re-open an application, is our essay from last year considered? i really hope not, because i believe that is a huge reason why i was rejected last year. i believe that the essay i wrote this year is one of the strongest parts of my application, and the one i wrote last year was just horrible.

W&M Admissions, if I don’t get in (I’m trying to prepare myself for the worst right now) do they generally recommend waiting another year before applying or just applying for next spring semester? I know you can call someone at the school to discuss why you didn’t get in, but do they generally recommend waiting a year or a semester to show improvement? I guess it depends on the reasons you didn’t get accepted, but I’m in the process of planning next year at my current school and I definitely need to think about how W&M might fit in.

I know there’s probably no clear answer at this point, but I’m trying to cover all my bases as it’s likely I’ll have already left UMW by the time admissions emails come out.

I got into UNC, but something about William and Mary excites me! I also think my parents would be more likely to send me to W&M !

Congratulations on UNC though! I have a friend who goes to UNC at Chapel Hill and it seemed like such a great school when I visited her there. Of course, best of luck with W&M. =)

Good question umw- i’m wondering the same thing. I really want to eventually go to W&M, so I wonder if I’ll have a better chance applying for spring or fall admission. I believe you can talk to the transfer admissions counselor and he/she can give you some advice.

Yeah, that was my thinking McBainTrain. It’s probably too early to pester the admissions office with questions like that. I should be more patient and actually wait for decisions to come out first! This week feels like an eternity though!

I don’t know when other people’s schools end, but I’m going home next Tuesday (April 26th), so I’m pretty concerned since I’ll have to do all my communication with UMW via fax/email/phone after Tuesday. Our Office of Registrar and other student services can be a little difficult to get a hold of unless you are actually on campus, which makes me really nervous.

Also, this is a little bit random, but can someone explain to me how agreements between community colleges and W&M work? I’m not going to leave my current school to go to community college, but I’m just a little curious about how that whole process works and how their admissions work compared to people who apply to transfer from another four year school. I’ve heard some people talk about transferring from a community college to W&M like it was guaranteed for them to get in after two years, but that didn’t really make sense to me.

Sorry if that’s kind of a silly question. I’ve just never been clear about how that works =)
