William & Mary Fall 2011 Transfer Thread

Rohel, I’m pretty the 350 goes towards our tuition anyways (someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s how I understand it), so even if you don’t get housing it still pays for something. The 350 would only in effect disappear if you chose not to go to W&M because it’s not refundable. But since you sound as excited about W&M as I am, I imagine you’re set on going!

Yup I definitely am. It has not really sunk in though, maybe because I am still at school for finals week. Have you been able to register for class?
I assume you are the only one on here who has received the letter and activated their wm account.

No, I haven’t been able to register for classes. I imagine they’ll have a day or two set up for that after they’ve gotten our transcripts and things.

Also, has anyone else who has gotten their admissions packet been able to set up their email? I was able to activate my myWM account, but every time I try to activate my email it says there’s an error with my myWM account. But I can log into myWM and everything. When people start getting their packets and stuff, please let me know if anyone else is having an issue with this. It’s really quite troubling.

@umw

Have you paid your deposit yet?

I also received my welcome packet Saturday (live in Williamsburg) and have activated my account.

If you check the Transfer Welcome page and click on “Your Timeline”, it says that registration for classes starts in mid-July. It also says you can access your W&M email once your deposit is paid.

I’m thrilled that I was admitted and am super excited about Saturday! I have a ton of questions to ask then. Can’t wait to meet you guys! I haven’t posted here often, but have been reading along. :)

@GodricGryffindor
Yes, I paid it last night. That’s why I am concerned.

Has anyone else paid and been unable to access it though?

Haven’t paid yet, waiting for the aid. Wish i could help, though. Give them a call tomorrow?

Yeah, that’s what I think I’ll do. It seems kind of early to be worrying about it since some people might not have even gotten their packet yet. I’ll see if it just needed some time to process or something. Maybe since I paid it over the weekend that caused an issue? I’m kind of grasping at straws, but who knows. Let me know if anyone else has this issue after paying. Thanks. =)

Will do. Do you know if housing is guaranteed for transfers?

I’m sorry I can’t help with the email issue. I requested admission as a FlexTrack student, so I don’t have a deposit to pay. I can’t confirm enrollment until I mail the response card in.

@GodricGryffindor
Housing is not guaranteed for transfers. That’s actually one of my huge concerns right now =(

Oh noes :</p>

at the transfer date on saturday, can we talk to someone about our credit transfer?

Okay everyone. Take a deep breath. We’re here to answer your questions.

As for class registration: you begin that over the summer in July online. Then during Orientation in August you’ll complete that process after meeting with your academic advisor. We have left seats available for incoming transfers in classes.

As for your W&M email, you cannot access that until you’ve paid your enrollment deposit. It does take us 2-3 business days to receive your deposit if you paid online. When we receive your deposit and enter it into the system you’ll get an automated email with instructions for how to activate your W&M email account.

Housing is not guaranteed for transfer students. On May 10, there will be an online housing request form that all admitted transfer students can access (you can PM us for the URL for that form). Housing will be granted based on requests received using that form.

As for the deposit, whatever amount you pay goes directly toward your first-semester bill. What you’re doing is paying to ensure a spot in the fall. If you get housing you must submit $350. If you don’t get housing, you can still submit $350. No money will be refunded but again, the money will just be applied toward your bill. You can overpay but you shouldn’t underpay (i.e. don’t pay the $150. if you get housing).

Activating your account: You do this through the welcome website (which was hyperlinked toward the end of your decision email). To activate your account you will need to receive your admit pack as it has your W&M userid and temporary password.

soychai, being waitlisted is not the same as being rejected. A) you still have a chance at being admitted whereas those who were denied do not. B) We viewed waitlisted students as more competitive than those we denied. We really will not know whether we are going to the waitlist until late May/early June and we will notify students as soon as we can but students may not hear from us until June 15. There is no average number of students admitted from the waitlist. Some years we do not admit any students, some years we admit upwards of 30 - 50 students so it really varies and there’s no way to predict how things will go this year.

Hope this is all helpful.

I was also waitlisted and have a few questions about the process…

If we agree to stay on the waitlist, are we required to attend if given an acceptance?

Also, what kind of financial aid will be available to those accepted off of the waitlist? I know that funds are limited for transfer students as it is, but is there generally some left over for those accepted off of the waitlist?

Do we need to have paid our deposit to apply for transfer housing?

summersunshine, if you remain on the waitlist you do not have to attend if admitted but you should not remain on the waitlist if you do not have a sincere interest in attending W&M.

Financial aid for any students admitted from the waitlist (whether freshmen or transfers) is limited and the awards may not be as substantial as they are for those admitted originally. Financial aid is not limited for those transfer students admitted initially. Admitted transfers are just as eligible for financial aid as admitted freshmen (the difference is there are not merit scholarships for transfer students whereas there are a few for freshmen).

You do not have to pay your enrollment deposit to request on-campus housing on May 10.

Is there a date when financial aid decisions will be revealed?

While on-campus housing is not guaranteed for transfers, the possibility that you aren’t going to have it is not that big a deal. Those who are concerned should start looking at W&M’s off campus housing website and craigslist. Some may be surprised to learn that there are actually many off-campus housing options out there that are more attractive - economic and comfort-wise - than an on-campus dorm.
