William & Mary Fall 2011 Transfer Thread

I have a question about Fall classes. I was browsing through the classes on myWM to see what was being offered and I noticed that most of the classes I need are currently full. I know you said earlier that seats for transfers are being left open. Does that mean spaces (like in courses that are currently marked “closed”) are going to open up when it’s time for us to register?

umw, the freshman housing questionnaire is only for incoming freshman. Transfers need only complete the transfer housing application. In fact, we don’t believe the freshman housing questionnaire ever becomes visable or open to transfers at any point.

Surfwakesnow, wish the award for best admission office had been enough to yield you but we wish you all the best at UVA.

YellowMarie, on the W&M Supplement to the Common App, just before all the questions about domicile, there are two check boxes and you have to check one. One implies you’re hoping for in-state status and the other states you anticipate being out-of-state. If you checked the in-state box, regardless of anything else, we considered you in-state when reviewing your application.

AAS515, that’s a question for the Registrar and/or Academic Advising as we do not oversee course registration. We’ll try to get an answer for you from them.

Stumpyman, how many years of high school did you have? We’re guessing that if you graduated at 16 it wasn’t the full four. If that’s the case, we’d recommend you complete your AS or AA at NVCC and apply while you’re in the last semester of that program and not before. Your GPA is good so you’re off to a good start but if you didn’t complete four years of high school it’s likely you’ve not yet reached the level of coursework we generally like to see from students. Your SAT will not be overly relevant if you complete the AA or AS and remember, we look primarily at the Critical Reading and Math so we work off the 1600 scale, not the 2400 scale. You can consider attending a Prospective Transfer Day in the fall to learn more about the transfer proces and about W&M.

Ok thanks, but instead of the full degree, is there a number of credits I can take (like for example 60+?) And I didn’t do the full four years but I did all the HS requirements so it’s an accredited diploma and everything…

I submitted the transfer housing request form from wm.edu/transferhousing and it did ask some questions such as “Do you smoke?” and a section about French, Chinese, etc. houses. Does this mean i filled out a freshman form? I submitted this form within the first hour the application went live and now i am worried that i may have submitted the wrong thing.

Stumpyman,

The recommended courses we like to see in a four year high school track does not necessarily reflect an “accredited diploma.” We always like to see four years of math (including Calc,) four year of science (including Physics, Biology and Chemistry,) and four years of a single foreign language. Generally speaking, students who complete high school in four years are not afforded the time to complete the above mentioned courses. We would recommend that you complete the full AA or AS because you are then guaranteed to come in at junior standing. Coming in with many credits (even 60+) but without a full AA or AS can result in the Registrar’s Office granting credits for less than the amount which you actually completed (for various reasons.) Regardless of how many credits you are able to transfer in to W&M, you will still need to complete at least 60 credits (2 full years) at W&M to earn a W&M diploma.

Cheeto1,

It sounds like you completed the correct form. Please contact Residence Life at 757-221-4314 if you have specific questions about housing.

AAS515,

We contacted the Registrar’s Office and transfers will be able to register for courses beginning around July 19. Spots will be opened for transfers at that point. Other spots will become available during Add/Drop as more movement takes place when students return to campus for fall semester.

is there a website that will tell us what type of courses from community college/online classes will transfer? thanks!

Are you taking courses at a VA Community College?

did anyone else recieve housing offers??

Got an offer for housing.

where did you get?

Taliaferro, 2nd floor, double.

Not really into the hall bath thing, though.

Are you going to accept–i got ludwell

Not bad.

Not sure if I am even going to W&M yet. Still trying to work things out with the aid department. They’ve only met about 40% need so far.

When did you guys apply?
I applied at like 5:30 in the morning when I got up for work on the first day. I knew it wasn’t guaranteed, but I thought I had a pretty good shot.

They don’t take into account your current home address, do they? I live in Yorktown, which is a commutable distance away, but because of various family and car issues commuting will be practically impossible.

I’ll be sadly rejecting admission from W&M today, so I’m sure my housing offer will go to someone else.

Best of luck to all!

The housing offer should just come in our email, right?

umw2011-The housing offer will be sent to your email.

Hello. Sorry for the long story. I graduated from highschool in 2003. I’ve only taken the ACT and I went straight to the local community college down in Alabama. Due to working full time, supporting myself straight out of highschool, and being unsure what I was going to school for, I didn’t perform as well as I should have (2.9 GPA with one withdrawn class, although I made Bs and As in English, science, history, psychology. I did very poorly in some electives which brought my GPA down).

I joined the Navy and I have served five years. I have one year left and have been taking night and weekend classes at Tidewater Community College. I’m very close to having an associate in science and so far have maintained a 4.0 at TCC. I will have 15 credits at TCC after the summer semester is complete. If I understand correctly, after 15 credits I can submit a letter of intent. I also understand I need to earn a minimum of 45 credits from TCC and maintain a 3.6 GPA. I’ve gone over all the courses W&M requires for transfer and I would have to spend one more semester at TCC than previously planned.

I am very motivated and focused my second try at college and have huge plans for either graduate or veterinary school. I volunteer once a week at the Virginia Aquarium and intend to major in Biology and possibly minor in Psychology. Am I on the right track or am I missing something and perhaps will not qualify for entering under the agreement?

Will my previous GPA hurt my chances of entering under the agreement? I am also not yet a Virginia resident, although I will be very soon. Of the 15 credits I have earned at TCC, one of those is from the Student Development course they require. The other classes are Intro to Philosophy, Gen Biology II, Gen Chem I, and Public Speaking. Could I still submit my letter of intent? I’m trying to find time off from work to speak to a TCC counselor, but my excitement/nerves have gotten the best of me and I thought posting here might give me a little more insight. Thank you!

Edit: I should add that I leave active duty July 2012 and intend to use my GI Bill and take on school full time, all the way to the bitter end!

Thanks again!

-Rebecca

Does anyone know what kind of windows they have in the basement rooms of Camm hall?

Update: Never mind. Found it =)
