annakate, sorry we missed your post the other day. Who did you email in our office? We check our admission@wm.edu email each weekday so you should have received a response.

The transfer dean is Kim Van Deusen. Her email is kcbake@wm.edu and her phone number is 757-221-4223. You can email or call her at any time with questions or you can post them here as any member of our staff can answer general questions about transferring.

First off, I am extremely happy to have a college representative on this board to answer any inquiries that students may have, so “thank you” for this great opportunity. I am from a community college in California and am looking to transfer into your business program. I have completed the IGETC as well as business calculus 1,2/ econ 1,2/ business stats/ accounting 1,2, and much more. I should have a total of 70 units by the end of spring 2012. My GPA by then will be sitting at a 3.8 with various EC’s such as; Officer on the Phi Theta kappa honor society, President of my colleges’ business club, managing a sector of a congressman’s campaign, over 6 years of work experience working full time, interning at a consulting company who deals with working with fortune 500 companies, and much more. Am I a competitive applicant? Also, can you provide me with any tips on making myself more marketable to your program? Thanks.

Transfer2Best, glad to hear you’re interested in transferring to W&M.

What exactly is the IGETC?

Sounds like you’ve completed the W&M School of Business pre-req classes although be careful with business stats. Sometimes that doesn’t always transfer as fulfilling the B. School’s pre-requs so it might be worthwhile to take a stats course from the math department. We’d also be interested in other courses you’ve taken. W&M likes to see transfer students, especially those with many credits under their belt, take classes similar to W&M’s General Education Requirements so hopefully you’ve taken some English classes, a biological and physical science, some social science courses and some history courses.

If you’ve taken these kinds of courses, been F/T (meaning at least 12 credits per semester and preferably 15), have a 3.8 (including any repeated courses) and are involved like you say you are you could be competitive for admission to W&M.

Remember, admission to W&M does not convey admission into our Mason School of Business. Once admitted to W&M, you have to apply separately to the B. School which is also a competitive process.

When does the new re-open application come out? The one available right now is the 2010-2011 one.

I graduated from highschool early, similar to rose23, and will be doing 60 credits (associated degree) at NOVA cc. So far, with 30 credits, I have mantained a 4.0 gpa, but are spring transfer looked down upon? And how much does the SAT effect transfer students with an AA (or AS) degree- As I only took the SAT once and recieved low scores (1800ish)?

annakate, the 2011-2012 reopen form will be available early August.

Stumpyman, spring transfers are just as encouraged as fall transfers. However, if you will not have completed two full-time semesters of college (post high school) before applying you will be considered a social freshman. We have to house freshman and so oftentimes we cannot admit social transfer freshman in the spring semester because we do not have any freshman housing available. You are of course welcome to apply again for the fall if you get denied due to lack of housing but it’s something to keep in mind. If you’ve compelted two full-time semesters post high school before the semester in which you apply then you’re not considered a freshman and that restriction isn’t part of our consideration.

SATs play a greater role the closer you are to high school. The more semesters of college you complete the less SATs play a role. On the whole however, SATs for transfers play a lesser role than they do for freshmen applicants.

I hear that William and Mary likes to see uniqueness in their applicants. Where on the application would be a good place to express something unique that may not be academically related?

Also, would you say a transfer applicant from a 4 year university with a high gpa has a better chance of acceptance than a applicant from a community college? or is it about equal?

Your essays and extracurriculars are generally the best place to express your personality and uniqueness.

We don’t think a four-year or two-year school is better than the other. We consider each student within the context of their environment. We consider courseload, grades, strength of schedule, etc. We do have some agreements with Virginia Community Colleges given that we are all part of public higher ed in VA. We of course also consider if someone goes to an elite school (a top-tier school like the Ivys for example) but we do not penalize anyone for choosing the school they did.

I was just wondering if you could give me an opinion on where I stand for transferring to W&M from a VCCS school.

So far this is what I’ve taken:

I received a 4 on both the English Language and English Literature AP tests and a 5 on the AP Psychology Exam.

Semester I:
Math for Liberal Arts II - A
Intro to Communications - A
Intro to Spanish (101) - A
History of World Civilization - B
SDV - A

Semester II:
African American History - A
History of Art - A
Abnormal Psychology - B
Drawing I - W(withdrawn)

Summer Semester:
College Algebra: ?

(So far I have a 3.7 GPA)

I also plan on taking Chemistry I, Bio I, Bio II, Microbiology I, another History, my Physical Ed, Pre-calc, Statistics, and possibly Calculus.

Are there other courses that I should add? I am going for an Associate’s of Science (I am taking the sciences late because I just recently switched from Liberal Arts).

I want to transfer for Fall of 2013, but I have yet to sign the articulation agreement. Is there a deadline for when I have to sign the agreement? Thank you.

@devan13, we don’t provide any responses to chances threads but we can provide answers to your final questions.

1) As for classes, just take the classes you need to receive your AS. The classes that are part of the transfer-oriented degrees (AA, AS, AAS) include the types of classes we like to see transfer students take (we would recommend going beyond college algebra in math however – especially if you are interested in majoring in science).

2) The articulation agreement for Fall 2013 is due Sept. 1, 2012.

If I’m applying for fall 2013, and my school is on the quarter system, will a Statistics class during winter quarter be taken into account? I haven’t taken any other classes that W&M would consider math/science, but should I note in my application this is partly because I received credit for my AP Biology test?

Also, would a Philosophy of Religion class or an English (Shakespeare) class be better for the fall?
My other classes are: Arabic IV, Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, Intro to Sociology
For winter: Arabic V, Middle Eastern History, Statistics, Intro to Economics
I guess this schedule isn’t very strong considering my classes last year were nearly all social sciences and religious studies, but my school granted credit for english, history, science, etc. based on my AP tests and I’ve mostly been taking classes towards my major.

Thank you.

We ask all students apply for fall transfer to provide mid-semester grades in late March so you can simply send an updated transcript with your winter quarter grades (assuming the quarter is over) and then we’d see your performance in your stats class.

If you haven’t yet taken any English classes, we’d definitely recommend taking one over another social science class since you’ve already taken several of those.

You can certainly report your AP scores on your application and let us know that you got credit for them at your current school. Keep in mind however that if those scores aren’t accepted at W&M you will have to take classes at W&M – if admitted – that you got credit for at your current institution vis-a-vis your AP scores.

What is the accept rate for Spring transfers?

Generally we admit between 40-45% of the transfers who apply regardless of which semester they apply for.

Thank you for the swift reply.
Do you have a link which shows the average GPA by major at W&M?

Not to our knowledge. The overall average W&M GPA is generally between a 3.2 and a 3.3. Don’t think we break it down by major.

Is it impossible to get a 3.8-3.9? I’m planning on going to law school.
I currently have a 4.0 with 60+ credits at the end of this fall semester.

It’s not impossible but it’s much harder to get all As in college than it is say in high school. Generally about 10% of the graduating class has a 3.75 plus. Remember however that law schools know W&M and know the caliber of our academic program. They realize that students who do well at W&M (even if they don’t have a 3.8 or 3.9) are really great candidates.

Thank you for the information.
How good is the financial aid for out-of-state transfer students?
And also is housing available?

For out-of-state students, we can generally meet about 80% of your demonstrated need. As a public university, we have some forms of aid that are from the state and therefore can only be granted to VA residents.

Housing is unfortunately not guaranteed for incoming transfer students although there is some housing available that’s awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis.
