William & Mary Fall 2011 Transfer Thread

I called the main admissions number yesterday and someone there told me not to worry about the second email, and they only send a second email if something is missing. ugh, other people are getting the 2nd email so why haven’t I gotten it?

i did not get that email umw2011. i got this:

We’ve received your application and wanted to compliment you on the great taste
you’ve exhibited by applying to W&M. If, for any reason, your materials are not
complete, we will contact you using the email you gave us on your application.

After we’ve processed the rest of your application materials, such as your
transcript and test scores, we’ll send you another email. Even with the benefit
of online applications, opening, sorting and filing thousands of applications
takes time. The process can take up to a month, so give us a little time to get
everything together.

yeah that’s what i got at the end of feb. i called the main number again today and a different person said they’re still processing and i should be getting the 2nd email within the next week. My question is if they haven’t put my application together until next week how are they going to make a decision in three weeks tops…i mean, i guess they’ve been looking at stuff separately…ugh i’m sooooooo nervous

Ok, so we’re supposed to get another email in addition to the one from February? This is really stressing me out…

no not you umw2011. it seems like you got the second email. i got the first email in feb and have not gotten the second email. the email you got clearly implies that they have all of your application materials and that you are set. the rest of us seem to not have gotten that email.

I misread Soychai’s message. I thought she/he (sorry, I’m not sure what your gender is) said she got the same email as me at the end of February. I think the stress of this whole thing is making me pretty paranoid. haha.

Whew, calm down everyone. Dont’ psych yourselves out.

McBain, the email you got is the first email we send confirming that we downloaded your Common App and W&M Supplement.

umw2011, the email you got is the follow-up email to McBains. It notes that your application is complete. If you’ve gotten that email you can relax. We have all of your materials and your application is under review. You will not receive another email until we email your decision to you in the last week of April.

Soychai, we send that second email to everyone once we complete their application. For any reason if we can’t complete your application, we will send you an email letting you know what materials we are missing and we will let you know how to resubmit them. Those emails are in the process of being sent.

Three weeks is more than enough time to review your application. We’ve been reviewing applications as they become complete but those students are no more likely to get in than anyone else.

You are always welcome to call our office to see if your application is complete and if it isn’t, what materials you’re missing.

thanks for the info wm admissions- I’m not too freaked out anymore.
I do have another question. Since I filled out my application here at school, I wasn’t able to quite remember all of my ecs from high school. I remembered two important things over spring break and didn’t know if there was anyway to let the admissions staff know about these.
thanks again

W&M Admission- any updates on transfer applications? :)

Are decisions posted online? If so, is there a chance that they will be posted before May 1, when the notification letters are supposed to be sent out?

soychai, high school extracurricular activities don’t play a huge role in our process (they play a slightly higher role if you’re a freshman in college but negligibly). So updating us isn’t a huge priority but if you believe these ECs are substantive you can email our transfer dean at kim@wm.edu and she’ll add it to your file.

McBain, what kind of update are you asking about?

narwhals, decisions are emailed, not posted online. They will be emailed before May 1 but no exact date is set yet. We know they will be emailed during the work week the last week of April. Only those who are admitted will receive anything in the mail in addition to receiving an email. Those waitlisted or denied will only receive an email.

W&M Admission,

First - thanks for taking the time to answer questions that applicants have, it says a lot about the school. I didn’t know anything about this thread, but I’m glad I found it because I have a few questions. I apologize if they were addressed earlier.

Does state residency matter for transfers?

Does W&M meet full need for both in and out of state students?

Does the previous school matter (4 year vs 2 year community college).

What is the average GPA of admitted transfers typically?

What else, aside from GPA, do transfer admissions counselors look for in applicants.

Thank you in advance!

W&M Admission- the reopen application didn’t ask for high school extracurricular activities. is it okay that i didn’t put them? if you still have my application that i submitted last year, they are on there.

Dark Ice,

Yes state residency matters for transfers. It’s not quite as strict as it is for freshman applicants since the number of enrolling transfers is much smaller but we still give deference to VA residents. Unfortunately we can only meet 80% of OOS students need since we have some grants specifically for Virginians. The previous school tends not to matter (although we certainly give credit to those students attending the nation’s best colleges and universities) and we look at students from community colleges separately from those attending four-year schools. We recommend have a 3.5 GPA or higher to be as competitive as possible for transfer admission. Aside from GPA we review the college transcript closely for course selection, credit load, high school transcript (especially if the number of college semesters is few), extracurricular activities, the essay, mid-semester grades, etc. We use a holistic process just like we do with freshman admission.

McBain, yes we have your application from one year ago which of course includes your HS ECs so there’s no need to repeat them on a Re-open Application.

Ok, now I’m freaking out. Reading everyone else’s qualifications is somewhat intimidating.

When you look at applications, do you also consider life circumstances? As a nontraditional student (I graduated high school 14 years ago), I don’t have quite as much time to dedicate to extracurricular activities and I can’t always attend school full-time. I’m a mom of 3 boys (ages 10, 6, and 5). Between the kids and their activities, their schooling, my classes, and home life, I don’t do much else.

I’ve attended school every semester since January 2009 (Summers included. I take anywhere from 6-12 credits a semester). I’ve taken a wide variety of classes and am maintaining a 4.0 GPA. I took AP Calculus in high school, but that was so long ago, I was nervous about jumping straight into Calc II, so I started back with College Algebra to refresh my memory (took that, statistics, and precalc I…am planning on doing precalc II this summer).

Does my lack of extracurricular activity and my occasional part-time semesters look less competitive?

Call me crazy, but I’m thinking raising three boys counts a major extracurricular activity…

We absolutely take into account any applicant’s background. Whether it’s students who are raising families are those that are working full-time we certainly consider those life circumstances when reviewing an application. The fact that you don’t have traditional ECs will not hurt you because we realize your time is spent raising a family.

As for your part-time coursework, that may lead us to recommend you enter W&M as a Flex Track student (i.e. part time initially) so that you can transition smoothly. When we review your application we will look at your part-time vs full-time semester and whether your full-time semesters were 12 credits or 15 credits (the average load at W&M is 15 credits per semester). If we believe it’s best for you to enter W&M part-time at first we might contact you about that.

I was wondering about recommendations. I’ve actually recently transferred to UMass Lowell from Fordham University (no problems with academics, just didn’t like NYC) and will be applying to W&M for Spring 2012. I know that professor recommendations aren’t entirely necessary, but would it strengthen my application to get 1 professor from each institution to provide a letter of recommendation?

Thank-you!

are decisions still on track to be emailed to us in about 2 weeks?

i talked to someone there on the phone and they said decisions will be emailed sometime during the last business week in april. so yeah. april 25-29. i wonder if they send acceptances out first.
mcbain, did you ever get the 2nd email? i just got it yesterday
