November 1 is just one short week from today. Early Decision applications and spring transfer applications must be submitted/postmarked by next Thursday. If you’re applying under one of these processes and you have any questions, now’s the time to ask. Our latest Admit It! Blog ([W&M Blogs The Deadlines Are Coming, The Deadlines Are Coming](http://blogs.wm.edu/2012/10/24/the-deadlines-are-coming-the-deadlines-are-coming/)) provides additional details.

Common App question- On our school’s site, my son can see that his transcript has been sent. However, on the Common App, his teacher rec has been sent but his guidance counselor has not sent ANY of the other required items. My son requested that these be sent back before school even started. He is afraid of alienating the GC if he, in his words, “nags” her about getting it in on time. What are the suggestions on how to handle this? Should he just wait until Oct 31 and then have a full blown panic attack? What happens if he gets all his ED stuff in by the deadline but the school doesn’t?

Thanks.

@tjmom, as we mentioned in our last few blogs sited in our most recent postings in this thread, we are totally okay if a transcript or something comes in a few days after the deadline. Our goal, just like yours, is to get the application completed. As long as we have you son’s application we will work with him and your school to get all of the required materials.

This is a very busy time of year for guidance counselors but they are aware of the deadlines and will no doubt submit what they need to.

Thank you! My school actually sends grades for all ED applicants, so I don’t really have a choice. Luckily I aced my test and my grade went up to a B+ :D

I just read on common app that teacher recommendations and counselor recommendations must not be split between electronic and hardcopy. My counselor and teachers have submitted numerous recommenations in the past and never raised this as an issue with me. Counselor can only do hard copy due to software limitation in my school district, while all my teachers have been using electronic. Is this an actual issue or new requirement that maybe they are not aware of?

Hi W&M Admission,

I have read all your threads in CC and Admit it! Website and found they are really helpful!
I am an International student who currently study in the US. I am really really interested in William and Mary. But I didn’t find a lot of information about international applicants. I am wondering if there are specific requirements for international applicants except TOEFL score? Will all applicants compete in the same pool or is there a separate pool fro international student?

Thank you so much!

@postcardgirl, we have a section of our website dedicated to international student applications ([William & Mary - Applying as an International Student](http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/internationalstudent/index.php)) which provides information on the additional forms you need to complete as part of your application.

Each student is considered within the context of where they attend high school so if you’re attending high school in the U.S., you’ll be considered within the context of that high school. We also try to provide individual context to each file so we will certainly review your application knowing you are an international student and based on your experiences, culture and whatever information you share with us.

Due to Hurricane Sandy, the Early Decision and spring transfer application deadlines have been extended until November 5. That is the new submission/postmark deadline for submitting required Early Decision and spring transfer application materials.

Hi W&M Admission,
I have already read the page in your website about international students. But I have a question about Financial Certification Form. Do I need to submit that with my application or after I am admitted? For secondary school report, if I have attended more than one school(some are not in the U.S.), do I need to submit it for each school I have attended.
Also, I think I am in a very unique case… I have attended high school both in my home country(9th and 10th grade) and the U.S.(11th). Because the education system is different, my ninth grade is considered in middle school in my country. So I have attended three different schools. I have only been here one year and my school didn’t allow me to take any APs or Honors for Humanity classes in my 11th grade(even though taking a regular CP English class in my school is considered in the top for international students). Also because I transferred to high school in the U.S., I didn’t have time to prepare for SAT or TOEFL as students from my country did within 11th grade.(during school year, the courses are really tough for me and I try to maintain a good GPA, during summer, I must take summer school classes in order to graduate in the U.S.) So I am really stuck in my situation and don’t know what to do… Could you please give me some advice…
Thank you so much…

Hi W&M Admission!

Okay, so I just sent in my application to your school yesterday and was all happy until I realized that my guidance counselor had yet to send in anything except the school report. (I was being stupid - I saw the green check mark on the ‘school forms’ thing on the ‘my colleges’ tab and assumed that meant everything had been submitted. Not just that I has assigned it. Ahh!) Anyways, I was going to go and talk to him today about it… but (as I know you are well aware) Hurricane Sandy has arrived and cancelled school for all us coastal Virginia folks. Anyways, there is a likelihood that we may not have school tomorrow either since there are roads that are currently flooded and closed off. If my counselor does not get his stuff in on time, will I not be able to apply early decision? I’ve already submitted my application, my supplement, a teacher recommendation, and I’ve done an interview. He needs to fill out the ED agreement and the recommendation letter. I’ve tried sending him an e-mail, but I don’t know if he has power or not.

Thank you! I just really, really want to get into W&M, haha. I was in celebratory mode after finishing my application before the power blinked out yesterday due to the storm… and then I actually clicked on the school forms linked and realized the green check mark didn’t mean what I thought it meant and immediately went into panic mode. haha.

-Katie

EDIT: I just saw your post above! My problem will most likely no longer be and issue, but can you answer my question just in case? Thank you so much!

@postcardgirl,

The Common App’s Secondary School Report form need only come from your current high school (especially if your current school has added your 9-10 classes and grades onto its transcript). You should submit the financial certification form with your application.

Have you taken an SAT or TOEFL exam yet? They are required and there’s no exception to that rule. You can certainly take them more than once as we will evaluate only your best scores. The TOEFL is not required although it is highly recommended.

If you feel there are any extenuating circumstances related to your transcript, either you or your counselor or both can outline those in your application (you in the Additional Information section of the Common App and your counselor in his or her letter).

@hummingbirds

with the extended deadline you should be fine. We will accept all ED documents submitted or postmarked by November 5.

It seems that Early Decision candidates need only send in a midyear report, not first quarter grades that would presumably be available before a decision is rendered. So ED candidates would not be judged on senior year grades. Is this correct? Thank you.

Hi W&M Admission,
Thank you for the answer! It helps a lot.

For the Financial Certification Form, I didn’t find a place to submit it with common app. Do I just need to send it directly to the admission email address, or is it there a specific way to submit it? Thanks!

I have already taken SAT twice. But the first time, I didn’t know anything about it and just took it as a practice test.(I know I shouldn’t have done that now, but it is too late…) So the first time is really bad… I took it again in last October, and it is still not good enough especially in critical reading. I am strong in math and writing. But the vocabulary in reading just killed me…I know your school didn’t evaluate the writing part. So my combined score with reading and math is really…However, my reading score in TOEFL is good, will it make up a little for SAT reading? I am going to take SAT again on this Saturday, but my reading probably won’t improve a lot… I don’t know if I should take it again in December(So it will be four times total). Do you mind if I take SAT more than three times?(I know some schools say no…) Do you require us to submit all the tests we have taken or we can choose only send the best ones…

Thank you so much!

Hi - Hope you all made it through the storm okay!

I think I know the answer to this, but want to exhaust all possibilities. If my child has submitted the Common App, but now sees something he wants to correct, is it possible since it’s still before the ED deadline? It’s just a minor typo/misspelling, but it’s making everyone here feel sick to their stomachs. We have no good explanation on why he, I (the mom) and his English teacher who all did proofreadings missed it. We all feel awful and feel like a strong essay will now get a mental eye roll when that part gets read. Do you have any suggestions or advice? Thanks.

justwonderful - I’m sure you want to hear from W&M here and I am sure you will, but a very similar situation happened with my daughter last year. She submitted what she thought was her finalized short answer and essay. 2 days later, she looked back and saw that she somehow uploaded her draft versions - both with bad typos. I absolutely can empathize with the sick feeling in everyones stomaches!!
My daughter called the admissions office, explained what happened and asked if she could mail down the correct versions of her essays, which admissions gladly accepted.
Was it absolutely necessary? Who knows…but it sure made her feel better.
She’s currently a happy freshman at W&M :)

@postcardgirl, if you cannot send your financial certification form through the Common App then just mail it to us. As for your SAT, we wouldn’t recommend taking it more than three times. The liklihood of improving is minimal at that point. We do take your best individual components and combine them into your best possible composite so it’s best so submit all of your scores to us. If you submit a TOEFL, we will consider that along with your SAT and in the context of how long you’ve been in the U.S. (or another English-speaking country).

@carpediem, first quarter grades are optional for ED candidates. We’ll consider them if sent but don’t require them. If admitted, we do ask you to submit a mid-year report and a final transcript so we can continue to monitor your academic progress.

@justwonderful, where is the typo? An essay or part of the Common App itself? Assuming it’s in an essay, yes you can just submit a corrected copy by mail with a short note explaining whwat happened and why you are submitting the new essay.

W&M Admissions,

My son (in-state) is very interested in William & Mary and plans to apply soon. In the course of working on the supplement, he noticed a question about checking a box if you want to provide an art portfolio (also music and a few other things). He has lots of artistic talent (identified as gifted in art since third grade and has received many school and regoinal awards for art ranging from paintings and sculptures to computer graphics), but is not planning on majoring in art although he probably will take a few art classes.

Under these circumstances, do you suggest sending some of his art work or is this mainly for students interested in an art? He is leaning towards submitting. On a different note, if we do submit some art work, what format should it be in? Thanks.

. . . or is this mainly for students interested in an art major?

@muckdogs07, it’s intended for any student who plans to pursue their art in any way, shape or form at W&M whether that’s through classes, an extracurricular or a full-blown major/minor. Our web site on the fine arts supplement provides all the details about how each department at W&M asks that you submit your materials ([William & Mary - Arts Submissions](http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/applicationprocess/artssubmissions/index.php))

Yes today is November 1 but you have 5 more days to submit your materials if you plan to apply ED or for spring transfer. If your application is completed you are of course welcome to submit it but in light of the storm our deadlines have been extended until November 5.
