Finally!Thank you so much!

Thanks for all of the updates. Looking forward to transfer decisions!

@Penguin25, those are still a bit of a ways away. Transfer Committee just begn Friday.

Hi W&M Admissions! So my parents finished and submitted the CSS profile earlier this week. Around when will we hear about our financial aid estimate? we just want to take a glance at it before paying my deposit, and I know we have 2 weeks to do that. Thanks so much!

@WMAdmission I know, I read the comments on Admit It. It’s no problem or rush at all, just as long as I hear before I’m supposed to move out of my dorm for winter break. I look forward to my decision, whenever that may be!

If I receive outside scholarships, will it affect my financial aid? As an out of stater, my full need likely won’t be met, so I’m trying to close that gap for my parents with scholarships. I just don’t want to put in so much work if it’s ultimately going to be taken away in my FA. Thanksss!

@soccersara, you’ll need to ask Financial Aid when they plan to release estimates. Remember however that you committed to attending if admitted ED so you can and should submit your deposit at any tiime.

@wmclass2017, outside scholarships do not impact need-based aid unless you receive more money total (scholarships and aid) than it costs to attend. If that’s the case, scholarships replace loans first so it doesn’t impact your aid negatively.

@WM Admission, thanks so much! and I know, I am certainly going to attend, my parents just want to see it first (they’re stubborn!) I can’t wait to send my deposit :)

This is from the Financial Aid site: Frequently asked questions:

What is the schedule for award notifications?
Financial Aid Award notification emails are sent at different times for different groups of students. Below you will find an estimated schedule for emails to be sent, provided all the necessary information was available to the Office of Financial Aid to award a financial aid package. You will be able to log on to your Banner Self-Service account to view your award.

Entering freshman - one week to 10 days after acceptance

Hi William & Mary- First of all, thank you for responding on this site as well as your Admit It blog- always quick and informative. I’m disappointed about the subject line of my decision email, but then I was relieved when I read I was deferred and not denied. If denied, I’d still be on the floor! I read comments on the Admit It Blog which sound discouraging for us deferred, but still hopeful, applicants. The comments seem to imply the deferred applicants have a lesser chance of being accepted than the regular decision applicants. Is that the case? Are deferral decisions made in Committe or by the reviewing deans (in other words, deferrals don’t ever make it to Committee)? This is simply curiosity about the process; I totally understand that not one person makes the decision. Last question, how many offers are typically issued from the RD pool? Thanks for your patience; I’m a future Admissions Dean and the behind-the-scenes work is fascinating to me. I can picture my application being reviewed and then placed on the “Good Things” pile! In the meantime, I’m going to work hard and send even better grades and scores. I won’t give up. NEVER!

@PhDBeenThere, that statement applies to those applying Regular Decision. Financial aid estimates for ED admits are sent in mid-to-late December. Their actual packages are determined usually in April.

@Ready4Me, it’s not that deferred students have a lesser chance of being accepted than those who apply RD but we have only 1200 applicants in ED. We have nearly 13,000 in RD so there’s simply way more competition now for admission offers. Most ED students went before the committee during ED. Deferred students will be brought before the RD committee if warranted. The regional dean however may be able to determine the best decision without the Committee process. We generally make about 3500 offers of admission during RD give or take.

In response to W&M’s post about how the deferred students are reviewed in the RD process, are they reviewed the same as those who applied RD - first by the Regional Dean then in committee (I guess by in committee if warranted - is that for all applicants?)?? Not sure this is clear to those asking (I may be wrong)!

Thanks for the reply. I believe I read that every application is reviewed by two deans, so can the regional dean make a final decision to admit or deny w/o the review by another?
I was discouraged today because when I congratulated an accepted student to W&M from my HS, they told me my chances were diminished because our school had already met W&M’s quota of admitted students from our school. Huh? Please tell me that’s not true…otherwise there will be a few of us very disappointed.

@collegeregistrar, every application is read at least twice by two different deans. An applicants can go a variety of ways from that point. Not all applicants are reviewed by the committee. If both readers agree that the applicant is less competitive, the regional dean can make a final decision. If the applicant is super competitive, the regional dean will pass the file along to our Senior Associate Dean for a third review. From there the student may be admitted or may be sent to Committee. This process already happened for all ED students. During RD, all new applicants will go through this process. During RD, the regional dean will review a deferred student and determine whether or not that student warrants another look by the Committee.

@Ready4me, there is no quota per school in our system. The only quota we have is 65% in-state, 35% out-of-state. If everyone who applies from one schoo is great, we’ll admit everyone from that school. If all applicants from one school are less competitive we may not admit any but we have no specific number we can take per school.

Thanks for the details I think that spells it out perfectly!

Spring Transfer notifications were released via email tonight to all spring transfer applicants who had a completed applicaion. Emails were sent to the email address provided in your Common Application. For more information on how decisions were released, how they were arrived at what to do if you didn’t receive an email, read our latest Admit It! Blog ([W&M Blogs Decisions, Decisions — Time for Transfers](http://blogs.wm.edu/2012/12/05/decisions-decisions-time-for-transfers/)).

I just want to commend W&M Admission for being so accessible and offering this discussion thread. It makes a strong statement about your school. Wish my DS was competitive enough to get in but good luck to those who are!

@grandscheme, it’s our pleasure. We try our best to reach prospective students and families in whatever forum they like to communicate.

Hi W&M admissions,

Do FA awards typically stay the same as the estimate offered for ED? My family is quite disappointed with the number we were given. We submitted the same numbers that we entered into the FA calculator, and the estimate we were given is $9000 more than what the financial aid calculator told us (we were told 14 k by the calculator, and 23 k as an estimate) I know they are not completely reliable, but we’re shocked the discrepancy is so large. My brother is currently a sophomore in college, and ideally, EFC is supposed to stay almost the same when I enter school. It looks as though ours will be almost doubled.

I have enrolled and will be attending, I’m just hoping there is something I can do to make it more affordable for my family. I have already applied for 7 scholarships, and will apply for much more. I have a job and will try to cover the difference. But none of this is guaranteed. I’m just worried Is there anything else I can do?

@soccersara, we’re confused. If the estimated aid you got is $9000 more than the calculator then that’s a good thing. Are you instead saying that the EFC on the estimate is $9000 more than the calculator?

You can certainly contact the Financiald Aid Office. They have your documentation and may be able to address the difference far better than we can. We don’t want to make assumptions since we have no access to any of your FA info so contacting the FA Office is your best bet for answers to these types of questions.
