Words from W&M Admission: News and Updates for the 2012-2013 academic year

I’m sorry, I meant that our EFC is $9000 more than the calculator said! We’ll contact FA tomorrow. Sorry for the frantic question.

Sara, how did you receive your FA estimate? Mail or email? (as we are still awaiting ours)

PhDbeenthere, our son’s financial aid estimate was given online via a link sent to his W&M email account. No notice was sent to his regular gmail account. We saw his offer last night and it came in about where we expected.

dadof3boys3, Are you in-state? I’m out of state, so I wasn’t expecting the numbers to be perfect, but it is not even close to what the calculator projected (and the calculator does factor in state-residency)

We are in-state. The number the College Board EFC calculator came up with is pretty much exactly what the W&M FA Office used (although it took a couple of days to compile the CSS information and only about 5 minutes to do the EFC calculator).

Hopefully, there’s been some kind of math error made in the FA office that you’ll be able to get straightened out quickly.

Please feel free to contact Financial Aid with any questions you have from where your estimate might be if you haven’t gotten a package to questions about how your package was determined. Financial Aid is a separate office from admission so we are not in the best position to answer these questions.

Hi WMAdmission,
So senior year has been going ok and i have been getting good grades. Unfortunately I am a dramatic experience occur within the last couple of days and I was sent home and my class dean told me I had to drop AP Bio to lighten my stress for when I return after christmas break. I choice AP Bio and It wasn’t like I had a bad grade I had a A. But that means now I will have only 2 APs for senior year and I know William and Mary Prefers 3 to 5. I told my class dean this but he insisted this was for the better. Will this hurt my chance of admission? My college counselor said she would write about what happened in my mid-year report :(. I know grades aren’t the only thing that makes an admission decision but it can surely help :(

@beautifulchick, the best thing for you to do at this point is to inform us of the change and explain why it was made so we have all of the information in front of us when reviewing your application. The presence or absence of one class alone will not make or break an application.

Thank you W&M Admission.

I also have another question concerning my state residency. I live in MA and I go to a boarding school in MA, but my parents recently just got a job in PA so they live in PA but I did not move with them because I go to school in MA. So would I be a PA resident or a MA resident. I think to be considered a resident in PA you have to live there for three years?

@beautifulchick, it wouldn’t really matter. Whether you’re a PA or MA resident you’re out-of-state which is really what matters. However, you’re likely to be a resident of whatever state your parents are since you’re their dependent.

I emailed my guidance counselor the second to last day before break, reminding her to sent in my transcript, but I didn’t get a response back. Our school is on break now. I’m not sure if she will put in my transcripts before the application deadline! I can submit my application, supplements, and payment before the 1/1 deadline, but would it be okay if I sent in my school forms a few days late?

@reinabot, yes, that would be fine. No worries. Just check in with your GC when you return from break to ensure the documents get sent.

Just a friendly reminder that the freshman application deadline is next Tuesday, January 1. We ask that if all possible, all components be submitted electronically or post-marked by January 1. We are not time-zone specific. We also realize that January 1 is a postal holiday so anything postmarked January 2 will also be accepted. In fact, we’re pretty chill. If something is submitted electronically or postmarked within a few days of the application deadline we will gladly accept it.

We will be taking a break from CC until January 5 to focus on processing applications. Any urgent questions should be submitted to admission@wm.edu. That’s monitored every day, even while we’re closed (W&M and the Office of Undergraduate Admission will re-open on January 3).

Note that given the onslaught of materials we receive at this time we will not be able to immediately confirm receipt of any materials. Keep an eye on your in-box. We will email you initially when we download your Common App and W&M Supplement and we will email you a second time to say that either we’ve completed your application or that we are missing something (if that’s the case we’ll provide you information on how to submit that information – no penalty will be assessed).

Good luck all!

Hi! I have a question regarding the essay. I submitted it already, but forgot to make it fit on one page - it’s one and a quarter pages long, double spaced. Do you think this will negatively affect review of my application? It would easily fit on one page with single or 1.25 spacing; I just forgot to format it that way.

Mine went on to a second page as well. I asked if this was alright, and they said it was cool as long as it’s not excessively long (way more than 500 words).

Yes, it’s fine if your essay goes slightly over one page. No big deal at all.

Great! Thank you very much for the reassurance.

Hi! I forgot to attach my additional information document available through the common app… Is there any way I can get it through to the Admissions committee?

W&M Admissions is the most responsive, receptive and friendliest of all admissions offices I’ve been in touch with…and, because I was deferred during W&M ED process,I’ve been in touch with ALOT of them! I took the advice and have seriously pursued other options although my heart is with W&M and it remains my first choice, no matter how hard I try to get past it. Anyway, since the Admit It blog has been on break, I’ve been reading previous posts on the site and found a conversation about deferred applicants not being re-reviewed until close to the end of the regular decision review process and because of the later review period, deferred applicants don’t have a chance to receive a “expect good news” post card. This post card is apparently sent to candidates during February as an early notification of acceptance. Not official acceptance because all official notices are sent at the same time. However, admissions is very clear that those receiving the post cards wouldn’t be receiving them if an offer wasn’t pending. It sounded like deferred applicants aren’t eligible for a full, comprehensive review this round, and may not be compared equally to the full pool of applicants. Can W&M explain why deferred applicants get reviewed late in the process, rather in the mix with the others, and why they wouldn’t be eligible to receive a postcard (if worthy)? Also, I read on the blog that regional deans don’t necessarily review ED applications (those applications may be assigned to any dean) but regional deans always review and may make final decisions on regular decision applications for their region. If this is the case, how can I be sure my regional dean sees my application prior to making their decisions and filling all his/her available slots? I don’t mean to come across as suspecting unfair treatment, but I’m scared my ED application may be “scared” by the deferral. I was strongly encouraged to apply ED by a W&M rep and interviewer, as well as my HS counselor and now I worry I’ve hurt my chances. I’ll can only add the required information to the application, nothing else to send in and the app is already competitive, so if there’s something else I should do, just let me know and I’ll do it! Mid year report will be consistent and demonstrate my academic dedication hasn’t weakened. I guess I’m just looking for reassurance that my app is still in the running and I have an equal chance to impress! Thank you and I can’t wait for the next Admit It!

Merp… i made a booboo on my application I filled out the section that specifically stated that i did not have to fill it out if i was not a instate student… i didn’t claim that i was an instate student ( I have PA written all over my application). should i email someone at admission or is this kinda irrelevant??
