Hi!
Northeastern is one of my top schools that I hope to get into and I just applied for EA today.
Although my stats aren’t bad, they are only in the mid 50% range of the freshman profile (ACT:32 UWGPA:4.0). Because of this, I am not too confident that I will be accepted this time around. Even though I live in Louisiana, my parents offered to set up a trip to Boston in the next month or so so that I would have the chance to visit the school (we have family who lives there). Anyway, would it be a waste of money to take the trip? I feel like if I’m denied admission it would have been pointless to spend the money for a plane ticket all the way there. Would it be beneficial to me at all, or should I just wait until December 31st for the admission decisions?
IMO most people with your stats are deferred in the EA round. Save your trip for when you get admitted.
Ah, I just feel so discouraged right now! Especially since I only got 2,000 from my safety school that I though would give me at least half tuition for my stats ( no more TOPS). Everyone at my school tends to tell me that I can “get in anywhere” but then when I look at the admissions forums here it seems like the only people who can get in anywhere are people with 35s and have ECs that I can only dream of having the opportunity to do.
I guess that was the response I expected but was afraid to hear.
No one “can get in anywhere” unless you are the daughter of POTUS.
OP, your stats are good. You have a good chance but nothing is guaranteed.
How is UW GPA of 4.0 not a good stat? What is your weighted GPA @marrtinac ? The 50% range of the freshman profile is based on WEIGHTED GPA, not UW.
Edited to add:
I looked at your posting history:
You are an under-represented minority from an underrepresented state (for NEU) with a perfect GPA and a very good ACT. I think you are underselling yourself and you will definitely get into NEU EA.Sounds like, from previous posts you took or are taking most APs that are offered at your school. You will do great in your college search.
OP I also think you will get in! It’s just the majority of kids with good stats like yours get deferred EA by this school. EVERYONE at my daughter’s school got deferred two years in a row. I did not know you are a URM from an URS. You’ll probably get in if not EA then RD! Don’t be discouraged, you will find your place! You’re doing great.
But bottom line, a last minute trip will not help. I don’t think NEU cares very much about interest. It’s in the “considered” category and they don’t seem to offer interviews.
Do you have other schools you can visit near NEU?
I was unaware that NEU defers so many students with high stats - DS is one and very much wants to get in as it has programs & courses etc. he wants. He did visit as well. Fingers crossed. Not sure what else he could do to show interest.
@redpoodles why do you think the majority of kids with those stats get deferred? Is that based on your own experience or just general knowledge. Our Boston burbs school Naviance shows kids with those stats all getting accepted early action, not deferred. Maybe we have more full pay kids with decent scores, located close to the school, so they feel their yield will be higher?
I checked our Naviance too – good idea @RightCoaster – shows nearly all acceptances for relatively high stats students with EA apps. We are in NY.
@CA1543 even my son who sits at the lower end of the high end stats group stands a decent chance of getting in EA according to our Naviance. It’s bascially any kid with a 30 ACT or higher stands a good chance, and better chances with higher GPA too.
I really think Northeastern is looking for certain types of kids from certain kinds of schools that can afford to go there. Having a 30-32 ACT score is not dragging the school down. Especially when they are not offered any financial aid.
If your school regularly sends kids to Northeastern I think you have an even better chance.
I could be wrong, but thats what my data tells me, and I’ve known multiple kids who have gotten in there over the last 2 years with less than stellar sat/act scores.
Is this in the last couple of years though? Admission has gotten remarkably more difficult. I know for a fact at our school no one has gotten accepted EA with a 32 or below in the last few years. However, Naviance shows that 50% of EA applicants got accepted from our school, but this is for “all years to 2017,” over 10 years of data. I am not an authority in any way and do not mean to convey any info with authority. My money is on what’s stated, however. I think MOST will be deferred.
A bit off topic but how does one tell in Naviance which ones were EA , ED, or RD? I only notice the scatter-gram for accepted/deferred/etc.
To the OP. I agree that you have a great chance. You sell yourself short. Save the plane ticket for when you get accepted and you wish to attend the EA accepted students dinner if NEU conducts one. You will have a great time walking onto campus knowing this is it and your in!
The OP with all the boxes checked has a high probability of acceptance.
Same question as above. How can you tell on naviance who is ea? Versus rd?
Also S has submitted app but counselor is still pending with school report and transcripts. On Friday S was told it would be ok. I’m hoping NE is ok if counselor is late…
On our Naviance you can tell because the green squares have a yellow triangle on top of them showing EA,. A circled green box shows ED. A blue triangle shows deferred, and red triangle means deferred and rejected.
You can also tell in the “School Stats” link, where they break up “Outcomes” by type of application but aggregate the years of data to “All Years to 2017.” I know about my school because I know the scores/GPA of the one kid who got in EA over the past few years from our school (It wasn’t mine–mine was deferred EA with a 32/4.3 but got in RD–22 applied that year overall and 6 were eventually admitted. The next year 37 applied (none got in EA) and 9 were eventually admitted). This year so far we have 8 EA applicants however I’m sure that number will go up by the deadline. I am expecting my youngest who is applying EA today (with slightly higher stats) to also be deferred. Someone in her class is the child of an employee and I think that person will be the lucky one to get in from our school EA. But we’ll see!
Good luck to the OP.
