2006 audition dates

Too cute of EricsMom to identify herself to the rest. You've got the pin and ribbon ideas suggested earlier incorporated into you ensemble!!

Question to this forum: My S is a junior and thus not doing the 2006 auditions. Since he's the type of kid that likes to observe first and then jump in, I'm wondering if there would be value in attending the Unifieds (we're in S. Calif.) just to obeserve. I know that he wouldn't be able to observe auditions, but just getting a "lay of the land" might be helpful. Thoughts????

My opinion is not to do this. There are so many real things to do in advance to prepare, without adding anothe layer of dubious value. Better (as I know you are considering) a summer program where he participates.

ElliotsMom, I agree with NyTheaterMom on this. I see barely anything to be gained from doing that and the time and resources would be better spent on something else...training, or college visits, etc. You can find out about what goes on and much else by reading this forum. And if you have the time one day, read back threads from at least the past year and you will glean much from reading of others' experiences. And if in doubt about some aspect, just ask. There are others here who have been through it. I haven't been to Unifieds but to other auditions for example.

I can't see how going to unifieds and watching people while they wait could be beneficial.

Another thing about unifieds that most people know, but someone I talked to recently didn't know - each college is set up at the same location, but you must schedule appointments individually and audition separately for each. Someone recently thought that the student would audition at one time before a panel of all colleges that would watch that one audition. Other programs may be this way but not the unified college auditions.

Does anyone know what is a realistic amount of schools to audition for at the unifieds. I believe the dates in Chicago are 3 1/2 days, (some schools less). I would love to schedule as many as six auditions during that time: CMU, Julliard, Yale, UM, Tisch, and maybe PSU, Ithica or Syracuse. They all require an advanced registration (some further than others) where you list the order of audition preference, but you can't be guaranteed that they will give you the time slot you put in 1st place and that could conflict with the other confirmed auditions. Plus, they will only accept audition requests with the applications (which for us may not get in on the early side due to application volume!), and then I believe they all let you know your confirmed times and dates a week or so before the audition.
How flexible are these schools with changing the audiion times/dates when the conflicts happen?

Our experience: Otterbein was super flexible and helpful, other schools not so flexible or helpful.

Julliard, and Tisch are not part of the Unifieds. Neither is Yale. Yale doesn't have auditions or an MT major.
Six auditions spread over three and a half days could possibly work. One thing to remember that applies to all schools: A 10 AM appointment doesn't mean that you'll be out of there by 10:30. The dance portion alone can take more than a half hour. Oftentimes a school will sign up a large group of audtionnees for a morning, afternoon and late afternoon time slot. Then, on that day, the larger group is split up into smaller 10-15 minute slots. You may need to contact each school and find out how they go about it. Last year, by D had a bit of a conflict with one of the schools. They were very good about working with her.

Doesn't Juilliard go to the Chicago Unifieds?

Last year Juilliard went to Chicago a week after Unifieds.

Several things - Syracuse does not go to Chicago at the time of unifieds. CMU, NYU Tisch, and Juilliard are not part of the unified college list, but last year CMU and NYU were there at the same time. I have confirmed that this year CMU and Juilliard WILL be there the same dates as unifieds. Juilliard said they realized their dates last year caused a problem. NYU does not post their Chicago dates until 12/1, but I am assuming they will be there at that same time.

CMU's selection link was up and running this evening! It was not working over the weekend. I believe their dates are 2/6, 7, 8 (exactly same as unifieds). I believe that Juilliard will be there 2/6, 7, 8, and morning of 9th. Both have the dates listed on web sites.

Lastly, a different thread was talking about illness. I called today to schedule a flu shot for my S only to be told that the CDC is recommending that the flu shots only be given this year to high risk patients, and our doctor's office is strictly following this. After having a nurse call me back and then having her talk to doctor, I've been told that my S can get the flu mist vaccination starting 10/4. Maybe this is a good alternative.

Actually the CDC is recommending that physicians wait and see if there is a shortage this year. Right now they are only available to high risk people but they very likely may be avavilable to all at the end of October. Flu mist cant be used in anyone who has asthma.

There was a post last year about those schools who were not a formal part of Unifieds but chose to be in Chicago to piggyback at the same time. Does anyone have that list from last year?

I think if you use the "seach this forum" on the far right of your screen and type in Unifieds, you can find it.

Obviously, I have too much time on my hands today!

LA vs. SF

be-a-star:

I don't yet have the list of schools which will be in LA and SF this year, but I do have last year's list. Here are the schools (from the Unified group) which held auditions in Los Angeles:

College of Santa Fe
Cornish College of the Arts
Emerson College
Ithaca College
Otterbein College
Penn State University
Roosevelt University
Southern Methodist University
The Boston Conservatory
University of Cincinnati
University of Evansville
University of Hartford
University of Miami
University of Michigan
University of Oklahoma
University of the Arts
University of Utah
Webster University

There were only two of these schools (Santa Fe and Oklahoma) that did not also hold auditions in San Francisco. So on that criterion, there's not a significant difference.

As in Chicago, however, there are schools which are not formally part of the Unified group which hold auditions in the same cities on the same days. My impression is that LA attracts more of these schools than SF does. Last year, for example, Carnegie-Mellon (CMU) held auditions in LA but not in SF. Although they haven't yet posted their dates for 2006, I have heard that they are trying to be back with us at the LAX Hilton next year.

As for what to expect and how many auditions you can do in a day, there has been considerable discussion about those issues on this thread and others. A number of students last year did five or more auditions in LA, with good results, as I remember. (See catsmom's post from yesterday, for example.) Most auditions are brief--10 to 20 minutes--so it's not impossible. Some schools do have an hour-long dance audition, and/or a required information session, however, and they want you to block out two hours or more. You just need to know that up front and schedule yourself carefully.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, I misplaced my list from earlier this year!

Hello

Can anyone direct me on the best airport to fly into from LAX or John Wayne (Orange County) to Syracuse? Also, any recommendations on hotels? I want to get as close as possible as I will not have a car (or would prefer not to).

Thank you
Lexismom

Syracuse has a relatively large airport so I would imagine you can get a flight there from L.A., even if it does involve transfers. This site should give you some idea of ground transportation and which airlines fly in and out. Good luck!

Whoops,

forgot to ask if anyone has completed any auditions yet and is willing to share? Daughter completed Elon and you can see comments on a previous post (all good).

She is looking forward to her next one at OCU. Just thought I mentioned she just finished a Master Class with Diane Ketchie and what an opportunity. She is amazing. Is anyone familar with her? Also, daughter is now in rehearsal with Into The Woods (Cinderella) and is loving it. This worked out great being at the beginning of the year and not interfering with college auditions. Things are a little calmer around the house as she has completed most of her applications. She had three essays so that wasn't too bad. Good luck to all in the next few months of auditioning. Hope to see some of you. I know I will be seeing Ericsmom (OCU)
