Yes, the 1st letter she received weeks ago indicated that her admission file would be reviewed by the scholarship committee. She was accepted in K. P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences with pre-med intention. I have stopped by mailbox everyday to check a scholarship letter which is important to me since I need to financially support her. Without a scholarship, I have a difficult situation sending her to Pitt.

we are in same exact boat on scholarship Dad2013 regarding admissions awhile back but no scholarship letter. From what others have said, the big scholarships go out first, which I am taking to mean as full tuition plus Chancellor invite. Since our kids have not heard yet, I am hoping this means they are still in pool for a smaller scholarship as opposed to no scholarship. Understood on cost. We can “probably” pull it off but it is pricey without merit aid. If my son does not get any, it will make him more likely to attend elsewhere due to cost alone. He too has been accepted to Dietrich and I’ve noticed most of the scholarship awards thus far are for engineering. It is possible the awards from the Dietrich college have not been sent out yet.

mommabear, for what it’s worth, my dc was accepted into Dietrich and received a full tuition scholarship and chancellor’s invite.

My son is in Dietrich, also pre-med. He received the scholarship information yesterday.

oh well, so much for the Dietrich theory. Somewhat disappointed but not shocked my kid won’t get any scholarship money. Hard to believe a 33 ACT is not enough for a partial scholarship but it is what it is… We knew going in he only had the minimum to get into pool. and he has good academic stats too. Not like he has a 33 ACT and a 2.8 GPA. Pitt is still on his short list so we shall see. thankfully, we are instate so Pitt is still affordable without any merit aid. it is disappointing to be a Pa resident though as state schools such as PSU and Pitt are VERY costly when compared to flagships in other states, PSU is not inclined to offer merit aid, and Pitt likes to make sure out of staters get some merit aid too. I support Pitt’s decision to do so as it is their money but the second string kids in Pa(eg 2000 to 2150 SAT scores) get a bit short changed in this process due to such high in state costs to begin with for the big state schools. My kid has considered moving to another state and working for a year to establish residency due to high costs of Pa state funded schools and college being far more affordable if he can establish residency in another state. He’s decided against this but it was an option we looked at. He can also attend some state schools in other states as a non-resident for less than PSU or Pitt. and honestly, this gripe is probably more at PSU as Pitt at least has some generous merit aid options out there.

ct987 - it sounds like you’re sure they’re done doing merit scholarships; we’re out of state and are hoping for scholarships, but to me it sounds like they’ve just started the process. Do you know differently - that all scholarship letters went out the same day/week? I would think it’s a longer time process - like over the course of several weeks to several months, maybe doing the full-tuition first and winding their way down to partials.

No, not at all. I was frustrated and just venting to be honest. kid just missed NM semifinalist too in a year with insanely high scores so I’m a bit touchy on this at times since he has scores in the 99th percentile and gets thanks but no thanks from NM board (for PSAT) and scores supposedly are not good enough for Ivies. So this felt like another thanks but no thanks. I am actually hopeful they are sending out the big ones first and suspected all along he is range for a small scholarship rather than a big one. and I am hopeful that is why we are still waiting. Just getting frustrated with the wait.

Hang in there CT, the letters are still going out. I agree, PA state schools do not take very good care of the PA residents paying the taxes. I hear WV has some great deals as do other states. Hopefully you will get some good news in the mail, best of luck to you!

thanks colldid WV is one of the schools where it costs less to go as OSS than instate to a big Pa school. Thankfully, Temple has upped its scholarships so there at least one instate option available for definite as opposed to possible merit aid. And I think the fully funded state schools, since as Slippery Rock, or Kutztown, offer good in state prices, but none of them are in big metro area. And i remember seeing something that those schools were starting to cut or at least decrease departments. And I am grateful that kids, whether they be in or out of state, at least have a shot at merit aid at Pitt, and in some cases, sizeable merit aid. For a state school, they are actually quite generous on merit aid. I just have a kid in that grey zone, where admission to many schools is likely but merit aid, depending on the school, can be questionable.

ctl, you mention that your child has considered moving to another state for a year to establish residency. my memory is fuzzy on this, but you might want to check that a one-year residency and one year of independence from parents will be enough to get him in-state tuition qualification. does anyone know more about this?

Many states make it very hard to establish residency for the purpose of getting instate tuition rates.
I know that California makes it nearly impossible to go to the UC system, even if you attended a CC at the instate rates.

No merit information, but they did send me a magnet lol

jekly, depends on state. Every state and honestly, every state school is different. Whoever said Cali is nearly impossible is right. don’t even bother. I asked U Central Florida what their policy is, which is a year of living in state, parents not claiming kid on tax return, and he has to earn around 10000 i believe within the state of Fla. Not sure if policy is same at Fla or FSU. Some schools will waive residency(South Carolina may be one) and others will waive residency if you earn a modest amount of merit aid(eg Texas Tech and A&M). And so for the last 2 examples, it would not be necc to move to state and establish residency. so it varies a lot and best to check with school of interest before going down the route. it is an option though if kid has their heart set on an OS state school that has doable residency requirements.

Daughter just recd her acceptance letter today and she applied in Early Oct. She also applied via the Pitt Prestige application. Good luck , Im sure their letter is on the way .

If you look back at previous years, the process of awarding merit is ongoing through even Feb/March - my 2 kids (HS class of '11 & '13) both applied in Sept/Oct and one got awards in Nov and one in Jan. Similar scores and same major intentions. So I wouldn’t give up hope yet. For my ds, getting that award in Jan really changed up his options.

I was accepted into the Swanson school of engineering yesterday for electrical engineering. I know people like to see how they match up to accepted stats so here are mine. BTW I applied through Pitt prestige app
White male, California
GPA 3.97/4.3
Sat 1940 (720math, 650english)
Act 32 (29 reading, 35 math, 32 sci)
They included a letter saying my admission was being reviewed by scholarship board. Hopefully I’ll get something.

What was your class rank if you don’t mind me asking? My daughter is also accepted into Swanson engineering program with testing stats a bit higher than yours but did not get any mention of scholarship consideration in her acceptance letter. Also, did you get the invite to the honors college?

SAT 2040 (total) / 1420 (reading and math)

ACT 34 (composite)

GPA 3.7 / 4.5

Class rank 13% (reason daughter did not get in UHC or scholarship consideration letter apparently)

Congratulations to everyone that has heard so far. I applied over the summer when I visited Pitt’s campus, finally got all my info in on October 15th and then got my acceptance within six days. Intended English major for Dietrich. Accepted into UHC as well.

Pitt is my safety but if I were to get merit aid from it, I’d be much more likely to attend.
Hearing that people are getting word of merit scholarships though makes me anxious.

My status are:

SAT Superscore: 2270
SAT Superscore (CR & M): 1510
-GPA Unweighted: 3.81
-GPA Weighted: 4.7
-My school does not do rankings
-National Honor Student
-Submitted Supplemental Essay
-High School is ranked top public school in state
-Taken 10 AP courses as a high school student
-Very strong rec’s from my math teacher for last two years and my english teacher who I have known for four years.
-Good mix of ECs, literary magazine, gsa, winter track, softball, gender equality club, anti-defamation league.

I know no one can say for certain if someone will get merit and it sounds like I’m probably not being asked to apply for Chancellor’s or getting full tuition, but I’d love to hear some thoughts from people in the same boat

My class rank was in the top 5%. Average public high school that isn’t super competitive. The acceptance letter says I am eligible to participate in the university honors program. Later on it says that I will be sent notification letter on the honors college as well as merit aid selection.

krose, are you instate? Your stats look great. My kid has not heard either and has 1450 SAT and 33 ACT, the latter of which may be just getting to Pitt as he took ACT in October. I made them aware of score already. Does not have the AP, honors classes you do but options are limited at his school. I am suprised u have not heard yet; less so with my kid as scores are right on border for what seems to be unofficial schoarlship availability. his major is close to yours.
