@katnissjul one thought about transferring…be aware of the merit and FA policies for transfer students at the schools you are targeting for transfer. Some may not offer merit to transfers or be more need aware… just something to consider if you ran into affordability issues this year. Good luck !
@katnissjul I also had the same problem of being accepted into match schools that I couldn’t afford. I got into Spelman, Howard, and Fordham but could not attend due to the unmet need. It’s a different kind of pain. For me, Barnard is now my only chance into getting into a university that will allow me to move up in terms of social mobility as none of my immediate family members have gone to college after high school. We are all in this long process altogether, and I sincerely hope that we all get accepted one way or another.
Yeah I’m not from NJ, so I have a different AO @awaitingapplicant131
@SuperBigMusicLover : I don’t know what other applicants’ experiences have been over the years. When my daughter applied, then generous awards from schools like Fordham, good awards from URichmond, GWU, NorthEastern were contrasted with minimal/no awards (and higher budgeted total cost) from schools like Barnard.
I wonder how likely affordability would get significantly better at Barnard, if that already prevented enrollment to other schools - but do NOT actually know what everyone’s experience has been on that topic?
I emailed the waitlist email yesterday, and they auto-replied with “As of now, the waiting list is still open and there are no current updates.” Yet someone said they got off the waitlist ugh… Could anybody who’s already off the waitlist share the notification letter? It’s so nerve-racking to even think about having to wait for another month?
@DigitalDad Barnard would be affordable since they would (hopefully) meet my full need. For my other schools, I had a large 40k+ gap to fill on an income not even matching that : /
@tbyrxx Hello, thank you.
My letter of interest was about 2 pages double spaced. 75% of it was information Barnard didn’t know about my yet–accomplishments from senior year, a note about my heritage which hadn’t been mentioned beforehand, as well as a note about a personal disability I have. Really consider anything that they don’t know already. For me, there was no way for me to incorporate some of these aspects into my common app (bc they didn’t seem relevant to prompts/I didn’t have enough words), so I really took advantage of the opportunity to do it by myself.
As far as talking about my love for Barnard, I mentioned how it is the only school I could imagine at myself, how I exerted the most energy into applying to Barnard (did an interview, visited, talked to alumni), and some of the programs I would be interested in participating in. Of course I mentioned that the nature of a school of empowered females excited me, but I think this is kind of a token response so be sure to have your own take on it.
I am sorry for my delayed response, good luck!
@calintx Thanks so much for sharing! I sent in a 1 page single spaced letter. If you don’t mind, did you keep in contact with your admissions counselor about 4 times a month?
@tbyrxx I was not super communicative with my admissions director, which I think actually was NOT to my benefit (kudos to you). I probably contacted her 3 times throughout the entire admissions process, but I sent her my letter of continued interest directly so it would be on the top of her mind when she saw my file.
@calintx Thanks again for sharing! I just sent you a PM.
this may be really random, but as I chat with the students of the school that I’m going to, I feel less inclined to invest my time into the waitlist. I really am going to love the school that loved back which is Agnes Scott College. There’s always the option to transfer, but the women in the group chat are all so welcoming, ambitious, and friendly I feel as if that may not be a need. I sorta feel like home <3
To be completely honest, I’m losing hope. I’m from a popular state which sucks for diversity purposes and I need a lot of financial aid. I have been rooting to get off the waitlist for over a month now and I’m trying to accept the fact that I will be attending another school in the fall. I put my heart and soul into my waitlist letter and it really pains me to know that they did not want me despite all my efforts…
Hang in there hssenior191919
@SuperBigMusicLover love your post!
@superbigmusiclover me too! I sort of wished I could move on but I still can’t and its so sad and heartbreaking
@hssenior191919 you will be amazing wherever you go!
which state are you from? @hssenior191919
@hssenior191919 yea, being on the waitlist is rough. I’m an international student from South Africa who needs financial aid so I’m not expecting to get off the waitlist, but I’m struggling to move on too?
The waitlist process seriously feels like the college process all over again, only a little worse. Do you all know if you would immediately say yes if Barnard does offer you a spot?
Yes, unless the financial aid was insufficient.
