Cargo Shorts...Why all the hate?

Theres a place for everything. When it’s shorts weather, cargos are fine.
Im of the opinion that if you’re doing anything even remotely formal, you shouldn’t be wearing shorts, period.

That’s not an opinion. That’s a fact.

There are no “professional” shorts of any cut or kind. If it’s professional, it has to be slacks.

The rest of this thread is just “Mean Girls”-style kvetching.

hahaha okay

this really isnt a “mean girls” type conversation. I don’t care what any of you people where, but if you want to look presentable then I am trying to help. Cargo shorts DO NOT look good and are just a few steps above jean shorts (yes that is right). My take is you aren’t in high school anymore so why dress like you are?

If you wear cargos you might as well wear a polo like this to go along with it:

http://img.diytrade.com/cdimg/749384/6237178/0/1273469332/2010_latest_abercrombie_fitch_polo_men_shirts.jpg

or you can add some maturity to your wardrobe, and this might not be for everybody, and wear a polo like this:

http://www.ioffer.com/img/item/205/449/168/ralph-lauren-polo-classic-fit-small-pony-lot-of-10-a00b9.jpg

to each their own though.

gogreek’s toolishness aside(you’re a fund manager? wowzers, you should be here at Wharton) I think cargo shorts are definitely an unattractive piece of clothing. Normal khaki shorts(minus the cargo pockets) are not exactly made with gold thread. They cost the same amount of money. There’s nothing wrong with choosing your clothes based on the expectations of others. If your clothes are an important part of your identity, then you don’t have much of an identity. Wear whatever is acceptable. Define yourself through your actions.

~WWjr.

I don’t really see what the big deal is. I mean if they’re comfortable and you like to wear them, I hardly think it matters what others think of them, especially in an informal college setting.

^ She totally speaks the truth. <3 XD

I don’t usually say stuff like this, but I wouldn’t be caught dead in khaki shorts - cargo, chino, or whatever the heck you want to call them. I don’t have anything against anyone else that wants to, but me? No thanks.

My wardrobe contains mostly black clothing, and I’m quite happy with that. Four years of college at two different schools so far suggest that my professors respect me quite well; many even compliment my appearance!

Just don’t wear raggedy clothing - never wear a shirt more than once without washing it, don’t wear clothing with holes in it, and don’t wear REALLY OLD clothes to class and you’ll probably be fine.

There are also other things you can wear instead of hoodies, like jackets. I <3 my collection of denim jackets and can’t wait to get a nice leather one. I do have some pullover hoodies… the zipper ones never worked for me! They kinda fall off my shoulders lol.

This thread is hilarious. I wear cargo shorts all the time, and if you don’t like that, I don’t care lol… If you like them, wear them. If you don’t, then don’t wear them… simple as that.

Cargo shorts…Serious business.

No, seriously, I could wear cargo shorts, walk to college and in the debate that would insue i’d get me more action than if I was wearing chino/khakis.

Polo makes cargo shorts that don’t look tacky and ragged, if that’s your thing.

I still just prefer khakis / chinos. Hell, I didn’t even know they were called chinos until I looked up what chinos were. But I don’t care if other people wear cargo shorts. On me, I like “chinos” because they look simpler and aren’t as baggy.

UKclassof13: Are you from Kentucky?

You’re a girl. This doesn’t apply to you.

why yes I am from Kentucky

lol theyre alright here, wait, oh, cargo shorts… HELL NO!

I lol’d. That’s possibly the worst combo in the world to cargo short haters.

Do yourself a favor and not buy them; they were cool at my high school but I unfortunately didn’t realize that they suck until I got to college after I had already bought another pair or two.

Go to your local target. They have that light khaki (white-ish), khaki, navy, and black flatfront shorts (meaning regular shorts, no cargo pockets) for about $20 a piece unless they’re running a sale right now.

I felt I’d add, in California most girls wear those small girly shorts and guys wear board shorts in hot weather. Only one time comes to mind I’ve ever seen a guy wearing these “chinos” as you call them haha.

I thought men wearing shorts that far above the knee was considered bad taste these days o_O

unless you wear some like these with a nice polo

Haha, I agree with lookingtofuture…but I think the running shoes are even worse than the cargo shorts. Seriously, running shoes? The only place you should be wearing those is on a track. Find a pair of casual sneakers that aren’t meant for athletics.

I see guys wearing athletic sneakers all of the time. Not to mention, sneakers are expensive. I get myself one pair of sneakers per year, and I almost never buy them unless they’re on sale. I certainly couldn’t afford to buy two pairs so that I could have a pair of athletics and a pair for wearing around. (Other than that, I have a few pairs of dress shoes/boots that I have accumulated over the years.)
