jym, on that "bikini research" thing , is there a continuing education equivalent course? ;)

'mudge-
Sounds like a question for SRmom3- it was her idea :)

He might be in Europe studying art, he might be in the south pacific studying the impact of global warming on sea urchins but he also might be in Hawaii studying bikinis.

Brings new meaning to the term "distance learning". Perhaps it should be titled "History and un-civilization: Bikinis-from Yellow polka dots to thongs". Care to put the reading list together?

jym, Nope. Sounds like too much work, that whole Annette/Frankie thing but I'll be dang sure to be there early on Ipanema Beach night . WOWZER.

Hahaha. I figured the reading list would consist of Vogue, Maxim, and Seventeen magazines, but maybe this is a film class.

but maybe this is a film class.

More likely to be an anthropology class, with observer/participant component and some postmodern theory thrown in for seriousness quotient.

marite-
Are you sure this isn't an engineering or design class?? How do those things stay up/on anyway?

OK, we are waaay off topic, but this is a far more congenial chat. :)

definitely engineering - didn't Howard Hughes design some cantilevered thing for Jane Mansfield?

Ah--for the staying on bit, you need to study not only engineering, but, I assume anatomy as well, and possibly plastic surgery? If we're talking about St Tropez, we need only worry about the bottom half.

So mom is standing in line in front of the college registrar, and Dad and S are taking Engineering 007: Desigining the perfect bikini. Dr. No, instructor. TA, James Bond, meeting place, St. Trop. Meeting times, every day of the week.

how about chemistry? They can do amazing things with adhesives nowadays.

Plastics, young man. Its all about plastics. Oops, wait. thats "The Graduate". Back onto the film idea.... or maybe the anatomy idea.
As for Mansfield, I don't recall the candilevered thing, but I hope someone makes sure anyone wearing a bikini top sitting in the back of an open convertible NOT wear a long scarf, like poor Jayne did. Ouch....

And while we're way off topic, did you know that Mariska Hargitay, who plays Det. Oliva Benson on Law & Order: SPECIAL VICTIM'S UNIT, is Jayne Mansfield's daughter?? Anyone see any resemblance in any way whatsoever?????

No resemblance, because she is also wrestler Mickey Hargitay's daughter and takes after him.

BTW, the starlet whose bra was designed by Howard Hughes was Jane Russell, twenty years before Jayne Mansfield's era.

I do believe the architectural term you are looking for is "Flying Buttress". I believe Miss Russell's "top" was modeled after the Cathedral at Chartres. I'll check. Edit:Yep. That looks just like it. LOL.

I'll have to admit when the Met had it's History of Fashion exhibit 3 years ago, my D and her friend were most impressed with Madonna's highly stylized golden cone "Bra". ( Wait, I meant Daisy Dukes.....in Dallas ... O.K. Well, I have to admit, we DO leave the ranch sometimes.;))

Ah this is scary. There is a website called bikiniscience.com. Here's a link to H. Hughes' "push-up bra" for Jane Russell http://www.bikiniscience.com/chronology/1940-1945_SS/JR4310_S/JR4310.html and to the chartres cathedral (good find, 'mudge)http://www.lessons4living.com/chartres_labyrinth.htm. Notice the labrynth. I do believe that is the pattern on Madonna's boustierre. Ok. TMI. Anyone care to bring this back to topic?
Addendum So this is becoming an history and architecture class???

It just shows that travel--even armchair travel-- can be extremely educational. :)

Wait- this gets even more interesting. Any of you watch Dateline (NBC) this past Friday? They did a report on tracking down the source of pop-up porn spam. If you go to the main page of the "bikini science" website you see the name Judson Rosebush. He was one of the people implicated in the Porn spam story. This just gets more and more interesting! So Marite, is this now a class in Criminal Justice???

Hre's the link to the porn spam article.http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8841299/ Maybe this class has become one on investigative reporting. That, or I have too much free time on my hands :) Ahhh, just like the old college days--the things we do to procrastinate and avoid the real work....

Jym:

My brother told me that Chartres is full of Free Mason symbolism. I believe the labyrinth is one of the symbols (The Black Virgin in the crypt, on the other hand, is a vestige of earlier paganism and gets lots more devotees than the Virgin Mary). So now, we're onto religious studies.

Marite-
Haha. At this rate, we're into an international studies course. Or at very least a multidisciplinary studies /independent major course. Can you please bring foreign language, physics and music into the foray?

I don't forsee my son going to FL, but it's nice to hear about this program anyway.

Rellielou

While we're on the topic of bikini science (how did we manage to get there? o_O), I found out recently that they make bikinis for men.

Yeah.

I think parents really ought to be involved with college education, to make sure that their kids are getting a quality one. There are so many problems everywhere - for instance, I believe it was a Dartmouth professor who described the Right Wing as 'those favoring elitism, rule by few' or something along those lines in his class notes and the Left Wing as 'those favoring equality and social justice.' On the other hand, I'm also getting the (possibly stereotypical) image of angry, ignorant parents shouting at helpless teachers on topics they have no authority over. I guess it depends.
