Delaware Class of 2018 Acceptances

I was told my decision was made. Just hasn’t been sent or updated.

robbo222: did they tell you when they would update your portal?

Mwallenmd, I’m surprised as well. My son’s last piece of information was submitted on 10/24 so he’s certainly approaching the 12-week rolling admission ‘deadline’. Hopefully he gets his UD answer before the final two decisions arrive at the end of this month.

No they said just keep checking back. Obviously wouldn’t give any info.

My son is from Massachusetts and UD is his first choice. Have applied but still waiting for decision. In reading some of the comments it seems they look at what part of the country you come from and certain areas are more competitive than others. Is this really the case and if so any one have any insight into how New England is viewed?

I think that’s true- they get so many applicants from NJ so if you’re from NJ it’s more competitive. I’m also from MA and I’ve been told that it’s a little less competitive in this area but UD is starting to get more popular in New England so we’ll see! Good luck to your son! :)

My son submitted everything in early October, but in November they emailed him saying they didn’t receive his teacher recommendation letter. They did finally receive it and that was around 11/22. Do you think that would be the date his review process would start even though he submitted everything in early October? We haven’t heard anything and I thought we would have by now.

The class of 2017 included the following OOS students:
NJ -797
NY- 573
PA- 388
MD- 218
Mass- 142
CT- 114

Application numbers from each state do not appear to be available so it is difficult to determine if there is a percentage difference between the states in the percent number of students accepted from each state. Obviously the quality of the students applying also plays a role.

1,336 students were from Delaware (about 1/3 of total student freshman class)

The numbers from NY, Mass, and CT have been steadily increasing over the years.

Applicants were told to expect a decision 8-12 weeks after a students application was identified as being complete. Things appear to have been delayed due to problems UD had (like many colleges) interfacing with the Common Ap site. Also this is the first year for a rolling admission process which I am guessing UD has had some adjustment issues in implementing.

My daughter is from NJ and also applied mid-October. The UD admissions office had a difficult time matching her common app to her recommendations and transcripts. She had to follow up with the admissions office several time and finally by the end of November/early December they were able to confirm receipt of her documents. The person she spoke with said that it would be 8 - 12 weeks from that point when a decision would be made. The admissions office also told her that they are not a “rolling admissions” school, but had made a committment to getting out decisions earlier this year.

Just a comment with schools having issues downloading the Common App… this was an issue in October which was resolved. I think UD is having their own systems issues.

IMHO a rolling admissions process has the following basic characteristics:

  1. An individual applicant is given a relatively defined time frame when they can expect a decision once their application is complete.
  2. There is no identified specific date when announcements of all decisions is made.
3. Applicants can receive a decision before the application deadline for admission applications is reached.
It would appear to me that UD’s new procedure for OOS students (actually for all applicants) meets the above criteria. If it is not a rolling admissions “process” then I don’t know what you would call it. What it does look like to me is that UD has switched its OOS decision making process to a similar process it has been using for in-state applicants for years. In the past in-state applicants began to find out about decisions in December and January. Now UD has moved its complete admission’s process to this time frame. No wonder there seems to be a delay in getting out OOS decisions as UD adjusts to this. Just my perspective.

We spoke with the admissions office directly and they do not consider there decision process to be “rolling”, but I guess that is their perspective.

I really was not trying to get into a serious debate about this issue. Its just something to talk about to fill up time while we wait for OOS admission decisions to start again. Having been part of the UD family for over 7 years I just find it a little amusing at times regarding things I hear people are told by the Admissions Department. Perhaps, unlike the US Congress, we could reach a compromise definition. How about “modified rolling-like” admission process. LOL.

my D and I were discussing the new policies since she is a soph there now and we are waiting on my son’s decision. We were curious how this will affect the in state acceptances for Delaware. Admissions has stated in the past “Delawareans First” but with the new system that is not really possible. We were wondering if they were raising the requirements for in state as well since the OOS has gotten so much harder the last five years or so. A few of my D’s friends (In state students) have struggled with keeping up at school and were really shocked at the work load while the OOS’s have worked hard but have been at a different academic level. Please don’t take this as a bash on Delaware’s school system or anything… I don’t mean that. Just stating an observance and conversations my D’s good friends have shared with her and their in state perspective. My D didn’t feel it was fair to her friends who were decent students but almost “set up” to struggle based on what was asked of them once they arrived at UD. I know they have had a 90% acceptance rate in the past but not all accepted to attend the Newark campus. Just curious if anyone else in Delaware or out has wondered if there will be changes in the in state admission process?

I was not debating you, just merely offering what we have been told. Either way these kids will get an admission decision.

IMHO I doubt we will see a significant change in the standards for admission for in-state applicants with the new admission process or the apparent increase in the level of academic quality of OOS students. For the past 10 years UD has pretty much kept the ratio of in-state to OOS pretty constant (1/3 to 2/3). UD’s commitment to Delawareans stems from multiple relationships between UD and the State of Delaware, not just financial (UD only gets about 15-20% of its operating funds yearly from the State of Delaware). It would take too much space to list them all here. So I suspect UD still plans on continuing its current “Commitment to Delawareans” at its current level. While the standards for admission may be slightly less than for OOS applicants I believe it would not serve UD’s purpose well to admit students whom they feel do not at least have a reasonable chance of succeeding in matriculating at UD. UD really wants all of it’s students to succeed whether they are in-state or OOS. I have not heard from any source that the drop out/failure rate is higher in one population than the other.

It seems nobody has heard about any acceptances since before the holidays. Is that right? I hope they send another batch soon!

Was told it may be several more weeks before they release any results.

Really?? Ugh this is ridiculous… They received all my stuff in the beginning of November and it still says under review :frowning: I’m so impatient haha but where did you hear that?

I’d be careful about interpreting the information provided by people who answer calls in the admissions office. Most of them are students who work part-time answering calls from applicants and I don’t think they have 100% visibility into everything that is happening at the back end of things.

My D called also app says under review for 10 weeks sent in oct 8 and was also told it would be at least 2-3 weeks
