From the UNC website:
James M. Johnston Awards
The Johnston Awards are UNC-Chapel Hill’s premier need-based scholarships. Every year approximately 70 entering freshmen are chosen to be Johnston Scholars, based on outstanding high school records and leadership potential.
Entering freshmen who submit the FAFSA and the PROFILE Application by March 1 are considered for this renewable award. Current recipients must also file the FAFSA and the PROFILE each year by March 1 to determine the amount of their Johnston Award. Annual award amounts are adjusted to meet recipients’ financial aid eligibility.
Special programs accompany this prestigious scholarship in order to enrich the educational experiences of Johnston Scholars and to bring them together as a group of uniquely talented individuals. Faculty mentors, Johnston Honors Seminars, and special leadership activities are included as part of the Johnston Scholars Program.
Johnston Scholarships are renewable, provided that recipients achieve a minimum grade point average of 2.75 their freshman year and 3.0 each year thereafter.
The Johnston Scholarship also covers additional expenses associated with UNC-sponsored Study Abroad programs.
If in a given year a Johnston Scholar evidences no financial need, he/she remains a Johnston Scholar and is guaranteed a minimum award of$1,000.

In response to Ryan82, my son is out-of-state. Although not his very first choice, he is very excited to receive this letter. UNC is a great school.

Does anyone know anything about the scholars program? I’ve heard 200 students are selected for that?

dmoore11, are you in state or out of state? Even though you didn’t put time into it, you obviously had a great application. Testing isn’t everything.

I’m instate

I got a letter as well, and I’m out-of-state, so…I’m kinda confused. I saw the out-of-state percentage after I applied and laughed. “7%…looks like I just wasted my application fee.” Hope this is a good indication cause I really need one.

Hi Firebreaker,

It is a very good sign according to the UNC blog. They actually refer to it as a likely letter. I think the OOS % is more like 15 - 20%, though. Where did you get your number?

Did all of you who received these letters/invites apply by Nov 1? I am OOS and did not submit my app until 12/22.

I have 2270 SAT and 4.0 UW GPA…think I’ll get one?

Its not really about the numbers… cant really predict if your going to get one or not. Julie did say that the vast majority of people accepted dont get these letters, so we all should just be patient til the 30th,

The likely letters were for Early Action only.

I’m really bummed I didn’t get one. I guess my test scores were too low for OOS (2130 SAT).

I’m happy to hear that they only went out to early action. I thought I just wasn’t getting one.

Although the likely letter doesn’t officially mean admission, I emailed UNC asking about how to fly down for Tar Heel Shadow because I live very far, and the admission officer told me that my flight would probably cost a lot and Tar Heel Shadow is only a few hours long, so he recommended I wait and “go to another program we will be inviting you to in spring”. So I would take that as another “good sign”, haha. :)

that is a good sign!

wow i guess he accidently slipped the news to you prismatic lol that is very funny to me.

I got accapted just talked to an admissions officer!!!

^ They wouldn’t tell you officially, Julie just said today that nothing was set in stone on the blog responses.

What do you mean exactly? Did you get a call from an admissions officer, or did you call to find out about Tar Heel Shadow and they just told you? Please explain…

I called to find out about tar Heel shadow and they told me!!!

Dmoore11 - I think that sometimes one can become overwhelmed with the stress of the college application process and not realize the effect they are having on others. If you have been visiting this UNC forum for awhile you will see that there are several extremely well qualified applicants that, for some reason or another have not received “likely letters” and are disappointed. Perhaps their files were not complete in time to be evaluated earlier. My hope is that these students are accepted - for many of them, UNC is their clear first choice and the dream of a lifetime. They are waiting patiently, along with everyone else, for January 30th. I can imagine a scenario in which you called this afternoon and got someone in admissions to give you a strong “hint” that you will be accepted. That is news that, while unofficial, you should cherish, but keep to yourself and your closest friends and family members. That kind of “news” should not be shared on this forum, as it will only serve to increase the anxiety of those students who are patiently waiting to hear good news of their own. Please be mindful of others in this process. For the rest of you - good luck and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you all!
